Gospel reading ( Luke 14: 1 , 7– 14)
On a Sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading
Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. He
told a parable to those who had been invited noticing how they
were choosing the places of honor at the table. “When you are
invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table
in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may
have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you
may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and
then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest
place. Rather, when you are invited, go to take the lowest place so
that when the host comes to you he may say, ‘My friend, move up
to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your
companions at the table. For every one who exalts himself will be
humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. Then
he said to the host who invited him, “When you hold a lunch or a
dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your
relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you
back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet,
invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed
will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be
repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
Brief commentary
The banquet scene found only in Luke shows Jesus teaching on
humility and Luke's interest in Jesus' attitude toward the rich and
the poor. Ancient dinner parties often called attention to the social
rank of the guests and the esteem in which their host held them.
Even the quality of the food and drink was different depending on
social status and level of friendship between guest and host. In
today’s story Luke writes, for the third time, about Jesus visiting
the house of a religious leader (Pharisee). He takes the opportunity
to teach the guests and the host about discipleship. Jesus often
used the image of the wedding banquet to speak about the reign of
God, and in today’s reading he reminds us that all are called to
this banquet by the grace of God and not because of our prestige
or position in life. Therefore, scrambling for places of honor is
ludicrous.
The point of the second part of the reading is that in doing good
we should serve freely, without expecting recompense. God’s gift
of salvation is entirely free expecting nothing in return.
Evangelio ( San Lucas 14, 1 , 7 - 14)
Una vez, Jesús fue a comer a la casa de uno de los fariseos más
importantes. Era sábado, y ellos lo estaban espiando. Al notar
cómo los invitados buscaban los primeros lugares, les dio esta
lección: “Si alguien te invita a una comida de bodas, no ocupes el
primer lugar. Porque puede ser que haya sido invitado alguien
más importante que tú. Entonces el que invitó a los dos vendrá a
decirte: ‘Deja tu lugar a esta persona’. Y tú, rojo de vergüenza,
tendrás que ir a ocupar el último asiento. Al contrario, cuando te
invite, ponte en el último lugar, de modo que cuando llegue el que
invitó diga: ‘Amigo acércate más. Y será un honor para ti en
presencia de todos los que estén contigo a la mesa. Porque el que
se eleva será humillado y el que se humilla será elevado”. Jesús
decía también al que lo había invitado: “Cuando des un almuerzo
o una comida, no invites a tus amigos, ni a tus hermanos, ni a tus
parientes, ni a vecinos ricos, porque ellos también te invitarán a su
vez y recibirás de ellos lo mismo que diste. Al contrario, cuando
ofrezcas un banquete, invita a los pobres, a los inválidos, a los
cojos, a los ciegos, y serás feliz porque ellos no tienen con qué
pagarte. Pero tu recompensa la recibirás en la resurrección de los
justos”.
El Evangelio de Lucas es el único que relata la escena de este
banquete. Lucas quiere enseñarnos la actitud de Jesús hacia los
pobres y hacia los ricos. En la antigüedad era costumbre prestar

gran atención al rango social de los invitados y a la estima que el
anfitrión les tenia. Aun la calidad de la comida y la bebida
dependía del status social y de la amistad entre anfitriones e
invitados. Según este Evangelio, esta fue la tercera vez que Jesús
visitó la casa de un líder religioso (fariseo) y aprovechó la
oportunidad para hablarle a su anfitrión y a sus huéspedes del
discipulado. Con frecuencia, Jesús usaba la analogía de un
banquete de bodas para hablar del reino de Dios, y, en este texto,
nos recuerda que hemos sido invitados a este banquete por la
gracia de Dios y no por nuestros méritos o clase social. Por lo
tanto, si todo es gracia, sería ridículo pelearnos por ocupar los
primeros puestos. El mensaje de la segunda parte de esta lectura
nos dice que, cuando hagamos el bien y sirvamos, debemos
hacerlo generosamente, sin esperar recompensa alguna; de la
misma forma que Dios nos ama gratuitamente.

This fall, St. Thomas University (STU) is launching a
master’s degree program in
bioethics, an innovative, interdisciplinary program combining science, ethics and human
behavior.
“Bioethics can be described
as what may be done versus
what can be done with regards to science and technology today,” said Father Alfred
Cioffi, the Florida Blue endowed chair in bioethics and
director of STU’s Institute for Bioethics. “The
distinction between can and may is not just a
grammatical distinction but an ethical distinction
because we can do many things technologically,
but should we do them – that’s when our master’s
program kicks in and helps individuals evaluate
critical situations.”
This program is a fully accredited masters of science consisting of eight course totaling 30 graduate credits. Graduates will not only be improving
the progress of healthcare, but will be equipped
to engage in deep analysis of the bioethical issues
