“Laudato Si’- Praise Be To You”
Dear Friends,
• ATime to Act. Pope Francis calls for a change in lifestyle and consumption.We
can make important changes as individuals, families, and communities, and as civil
and political leaders.
I share with you a recent publication of the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops…
• Hope and Joy. “Injustice is not invincible” (no. 74) and we act knowing that
we seek to live out God’s vision of renewed relationships with God, ourselves, one
another, and creation.
“LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord.”
These are the words that open Pope Francis’ encyclical on
ecology and care for God’s creation. These words, quoting
St. Francis of Assisi’s beautiful canticle, remind us that our
common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother
who opens her arms to embrace us. Pope Francis addresses Laudato Si’ to “every
person on the planet,” for we all share a common home—the earth. He focuses on
a number of important themes.
Each of us is called to take concrete steps – from reducing consumption to working
for political change – to better care for creation. Here are some ideas.
1. Become more aware of our connectedness. Care for one another and
creation includes understanding that “everything is connected” (no.
91) and that the economy, politics, community involvement, and
technology all affect the future of the planet and humankind. How
can we become more aware of our connectedness?
• A Moral and Spiritual Challenge.The ecological crisis, Pope Francis writes,
is a summons to profound interior conversion—to renew our relationships with
God, one another, and the created world.
2. Changes to lifestyle and consumption habits can make a big difference.
For example, get a re-usable water bottle, take shorter showers, walk,
bike or take public transportation instead of driving, recycle, compost
food waste, and buy energy efficient appliances.
• Care for God’s Creation. God created the world and entrusted it to us as a gift.
Now we have the responsibility to care for and protect it and all people, who are part
of creation. Protecting human dignity is strongly linked to care for creation.
• We are All Connected. We are connected to the rest of the human family, to the
created world, and to those who will come after us in future generations.
3. Make changes institutionally at your parish, school, or workplace. For
example, start recycling and composting, use washable dinnerware in
cafeterias, share electronically instead of printing, do an energy audit,
and install solar panels.
• Impact on the Poor. People in poverty have contributed least to climate change,
yet they are disproportionately impacted by it.As a result of excessive use of natural
resource by wealthy nations, those who are poor experience pollution, lack of access
to clean water, hunger, and more.
4. Support local efforts to solve environmental problems. Community
groups around the country are working to make city, county, and
state-wide changes that can make a big difference. Find out what is
going on locally and get involved.
• Called to Solidarity. We are one human family and have a shared responsibility
for others and for creation. Wealthy countries have a responsibility to reduce
consumption of non-renewal resources and should help poorer nations develop in
sustainable ways.
5. Contact your members of Congress to share Pope Francis’ message
and urge action to address climate change.
• Technological and economic development must serve human beings
and enhance human dignity, instead of creating an economy of exclusion, so that all
people have access to what is needed for authentic human development.

• Supporting Life, Protecting Creation. Concern for nature is incompatible
with failure to protect vulnerable human beings, such as unborn children, people
with disabilities, or victims of human trafficking.

MISSION APPEAL NEXT WEEKEND
Next weekend, July 11-12, we will have a
guest speaker at all of the masses offering
the annual mission appeal for the church’s
many-faceted missionary activities
throughout the world. Foundation for
Children in Need (FCN) is a Catholic lay
organization based in Arlington Heights,
Illinois. Brian Reynolds, a past board
member and current Director of Development for FCN, is very
happy to visit us and share about their mission work in the interior
villages in the Southern part of India. FCN sponsors 2500 children
and 10 elderly today. They have been responsible for building
several schools, boarding homes, a community health center and
a home for the elderly. They provide free medical check-ups and
medicine to thousands of needy adults and children. We welcome
Brian Reynolds and encourage you to support FCN’s mission
work generously. There will be a second collection taken up next

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION
Registration forms and tuition information for our Religious Education
program are available in both the rectory office and on our website at
www.stjohnberchmans.org. Classes take place on Saturday mornings from
9am-10:30am and will begin on Saturday, September 12th. If you have any
questions about the SJB Religious Education Program please contact the
rectory office. The registration fee will be waived if the forms are returned
before the first day of classes.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME CATHOLIC?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a journey for adults
who would like to be baptized, receive first Holy Communion and be
confirmed. The RCIA process can also help you complete the necessary
steps to become a member of the Catholic Church if you were baptized in
another Christian denomination.
The SJB RCIA program will meet from late September through April, and
the sacraments are received at the Easter Vigil on March 26, 2016. The
process of RCIA is a journey of faith, led by the Holy Spirit. It is a time
to tell stories, ask questions, meet new friends and explore prayer and
scripture.

MASS INTENTIONS
All St. John Berchmans parishioners and friends are invited to request Mass
intentions for those who have died, for loved ones on their birthdays or
anniversaries, or for any other occasion or concern. As the Holy Sacrifice of
the Mass is the most powerful prayer of the Church, this is a very effective
way to honor the living or pray for the dead.
The suggested donation for these Masses is $10 per Mass. We will be
limiting the number of intentions to two per Mass, so in order to ensure
availability of your requested day and time, please submit this request to the
rectory office as soon as possible. Intentions will be added to the calendar
on a first-come basis. Mass intentions are now be accepted for all Masses
through December 2016.

Queridos Amigos,
• Esperanza y Alegría. “La injusticia no es invencible” (n.° 74) y actuamos sabiendo
que buscamos vivir la visión de relaciones renovadas con Dios, con nosotros mismos,
con los demás, y con la creación de Dios.
Comparto con ustedes una publicación reciente de la
Conferencia Estadounidense de Obispos Católicos...
Se nos llama a cada uno de nosotros a tomar medidas concretas - desde reducir el
consumo hasta trabajar por un cambio político - a un mejor cuidado de la creación.
Aquí están algunas ideas.
“LAUDATO SI ‘, mi’ Signore” - “Alabado seas, mi Señor.”
Estas son las palabras que abren la encíclica del Papa
Francisco sobre la ecología y el cuidado de la creación de
Dios. Estas palabras, cotizando el hermoso cántico de San
Francisco de Asís, nos recuerdan que nuestro hogar común
es como una hermana con quien compartimos nuestra vida
y una hermosa madre que abre sus brazos para abrazarnos. El Papa Francisco dirige
el Laudato Si’ a “cada persona en el planeta”, para que todos compartamos un hogar
común en la tierra. Él se enfoca en una serie de temas importantes.
• Desafío Moral y Espiritual. La crisis ecológica, el Papa Francisco escribe, es
una llamada a la profunda conversión interior a renovar nuestras relaciones con Dios,
con los demás y con el mundo.
• Cuidado de la Creación de Dios. Dios creó el mundo y lo confió a nosotros
como un regalo. Ahora tenemos la responsabilidad de cuidar y protegerlo y a todas
las personas, que son parte de la creación. La protección de la dignidad humana está
fuertemente ligada al cuidado de la creación.

Hágase más consciente de nuestra conexión. El cuidado de unos

de la comunidad, y la tecnología, afectan el futuro del planeta y
de la humanidad. ¿Cómo podemos ser más conscientes de nuestra
conexión?

hacer una gran diferencia. Por ejemplo, usar una botella de agua
reutilizable, tomar duchas más cortas, caminar, usar la bicicleta o
tomar el transporte público en lugar de conducir, reciclar, usar los
residuos de alimentos como abono y comprar electrodomésticos
eficientes.

Realice cambios institucionales en su parroquia, escuela o lugar de
trabajo. Por ejemplo, inicie el reciclaje y el uso de abono (desperdicio
de alimentos), utilice la vajilla lavable en las cafeterías, comparta
electrónicamente en lugar de imprimir, hacer una auditoría de
conservar la energía, e instalar paneles solares.

Apoyar los esfuerzos locales para resolver los problemas ambientales.
Los grupos comunitarios de todo el país están trabajando para hacer
que la ciudad, el condado y estados hagan cambios que pueden hacer
una gran diferencia. Averigüe lo que está pasando a nivel local y
participe.

a las naciones más pobres a desarrollarse de manera sostenible.
Espero que esté disfrutando del comienzo del verano y que considere en su
corazón la invitación de Joe D’Arco para hacer su contribución a la parroquia en
www.givecentral.org. Si todos damos un poco más vamos a tener un estabilizado
presupuesto en el año fiscal 2016.
• Desarrollo Tecnológico y Económico. Debe servir a los seres humanos y
mejorar la dignidad humana, en vez de crear una economía exclusiva, de modo que
todas las personas tengan acceso a lo necesario para un auténtico desarrollo humano.
• Apoyo a la Vida, La Protección de la Creación. La preocupación por
la naturaleza es incompatible con la falta de protección de los seres humanos
vulnerables, como los niños no nacidos, personas con discapacidad o víctimas del
tráfico de seres humanos.
Paz,
• Momento de Actuar. El Papa Francisco llama a cambiar el estilo de vida y
el consumo. Podemos hacer cambios importantes como individuos, familias y
comunidades, así como líderes civiles y políticos.

NIÑOS NECESITADOS
El próximo fin de semana, Julio 1112, tendremos un invitado orador de la
Colaboración Misionera del Verano 2015
que hablará en todas las Misas acerca de las
muchas facetas de actividades misioneras de
la iglesia en todo el mundo. La Fundación
para Niños Necesitados (FCN) es la organización católica localizada en
Arlington Heights, Illinois. Brian Reynolds, ex miembro del Consejo
y actual Director de Desarrollo de FCN, está feliz de visitarnos y
compartir acerca de su trabajo misionero en los pueblos del interior
en la parte sur de India. FCN patrocina 2.500 niños y 10 ancianos en
la actualidad. Ellos han sido responsables de construir varias escuelas,

Over the past several years, we have done many great things to
our parish and school buildings. We have restored and renewed
and we have rejoiced in the work that we accomplished together
as a community.
But the work is not yet completed and the bills have not yet
been paid. This year’s Annual Catholic Appeal with the Debt
Reduction Program will give us a chance to eliminate our debt so
that we can continue the great work of building our community.
If you have not yet pledged to the Annual Catholic Appeal, now
is the time. Pledge payments will be accepted and matched all
the way through January 31, 2016. Are you in?

program that supports individuals who are grieving the loss of a loved
one by suicide. The LOSS Program is offered by Catholic Charities
