BISHOPS GATHER AT THE BORDER
LOS OBISPOS SE REÚNEN EN LA FRONTERA
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)
Committee on Migration, joined by bishops on the border,
traveled to Nogales, Arizona to celebrate a Mass in April on
behalf of the nearly 6,000 migrants who have died in the U.S.
desert since 1998.
The purpose of the Mass was to highlight the human
suffering caused by a broken immigration system. “What we fail
to remember in this debate is the human aspect of immigration-that immigration is primarily about human beings, not
economic or social issues,” said Bishop Eusebio Elizondo,
auxiliary bishop of Seattle and chairman of the USCCB
Committee on Migration. “Those who have died, and those
deported each day, have the same value and innate God-given
dignity as all persons, yet we ignore their suffering and their
deaths.”
The trip to the border followed the example of Pope
Francis, who, in his first trip outside of Rome, traveled to the
Italian island of Lampedusa to remember African migrants who
died attempting to reach Europe. During that trip, Pope Francis
spoke about the “globalization of indifference” toward migrants
and decried the “throwaway culture” that disposes of human
beings in the pursuit of wealth.
In his homily, Cardinal Sean O’malley said he had
buried one of his parishioners who was murdered at the border.
“We know that the border is lined with unmarked graves of
thousands who die alone and nameless. We come to the
desert today because it is the road to Jericho; it is traveled by
many traveled by many trying to reach the metropolis of
Jerusalem. We come here today to be a neighbor and to find a
neighbor in each of the suffering people who risk their lives and
at times lose their lives in the desert. Pope Francis encourages
us to go to the periphery to seek our neighbor in places of pain
and darkness. We are her to discover our own identity as God’s
children so that we can discover who our neighbor is, who is
our brother and sister.”
Cardinal O’Malley also said, “Here in the desert of
Arizona, we come to mourn the countless immigrants who risk
their lives at the hands of the coyotes and the forces of nature
to come to the United States. Every year four hundred bodies
are found here at the border, bodies of men, women and
children seeking to enter the United States. Those are only the
bodies that are found. As the border crossings become more
difficult, people take greater risks and more are perishing.”
According to the USCCB, “in 2013 an estimated
25,000 children, mostly from Central America arrived in the US,
unaccompanied by an adult. Tens of thousands of families are
separated in the midst of migration patterns. More than 10
million undocumented immigrants are exposed to exploitation
and lack access to basic human services, and are living in
constant fear. They contribute to our economy by their hard
work, often by contributing billions of dollars each year to the
social security fund and to Medicare programs that will never
benefit them.”

El comité de Migraciones de la Conferencia de
Obispos católicos de Estados Unidos (USCCB) se unió a
obispos en la frontera con quienes viajo a Nogales, Arizona
para celebrar una Misa por los casi 6,000 migrantes que han
muerto en el desierto de Estados Unidos desde 1998.
El objetivo de la Misa era enfatizar el sufrimiento
humano causado por un sistema de inmigración deficiente. “Lo
que no recordamos en este debate es el aspecto humano de la
inmigración—el hecho de que la inmigración trata en primer
lugar de seres humanos, no de temas económicos o sociales”,
dijo el Obispo Eusebio Elizondo, obispo auxiliar de Seattle y
presidente del Comité de Migraciones. “Los que han muerto, y
los deportados cada día, tienen el mismo valor humano y
dignidad innata recibida de Dios que todas las personas, pero
ignoramos su sufrimiento y sus muertes”.
El viaje a la frontera siguió el ejemplo del Papa
Francisco quien, en su primera salida de Roma, viajo a la isla
italiana de Lampedusa para recordar a los migrantes africanos
muertos en su intento por llegar a Europa. Durante ese viaje,
el Papa Francisco habló sobre la “globalización de la
indiferencia” hacia los migrantes y lamento la “cultura de
desecho” que se descarga de los seres humanos en su
búsqueda de la riqueza.
En su homilía el Cardenal Sean O’Malley dijo que
había enterrado a uno de sus feligreses que había sido
asesinado en la frontera. “Sabemos que la frontera está
bordeada de tumbas sin marcar de miles que mueren solos y
sin nombre. Venimos hoy al desierto porque es el camino a
Jericó. Está recorrido por muchos que tratan de alcanzar la
metrópolis de Jerusalén. Venimos hoy aquí a ser prójimos y a
encontrar a un prójimo en cada una de las personas sufrientes
que arriesgan sus vidas y a veces pierden sus vidas en el
desierto. El Papa Francisco nos anima a ir a la periferia y a
buscar a nuestro prójimo en lugares de dolor y oscuridad.

El Cardenal O’Malley dijo también: “Aquí en el
desierto de Arizona, venimos a llorar a los innumerables

Más de 10 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados se ven
expuestos a la explotación y a la falta de acceso a servicios
humanos básicos, y viven en temor constante. Contribuyen a
nuestra economía con su duro trabajo, a menudo
contribuyendo billones de dólares cada año a la seguridad
social y programad de Medicare que nunca los beneficiaran”.

All the Parishes of the Diocese of Wilmington will
participate in a major fundraising effort that will
help strengthen our parish and diocese. The
Sustaining Hope for the Future campaign will
achieve four objectives: to reinforce the pension
plan for our dedicated employees; to grow the
retirement fund for our beloved priests; to
strengthen existing diocesan ministries; and to
sustain the current and future needs of our
parishes.
Our parish will take part in the campaign beginning
in mid-September. We are currently looking for
volunteers to help with the effort. You will receive
training and be asked to attend a couple of brief
meetings. Your primary focus as a volunteer is to
visit and follow up with other parishioners about the
campaign, provide testimonial and encourage
support.

Bishop Francis Malooly invites all couples
celebrating their 25th or 40th or 50th wedding
anniversary, or any anniversary beyond 50, to the
Annual Wedding Anniversary Mass at 1:30 PM on
Sunday, September 28, 2014 at St. John the
Beloved Parish, 907 Milltown Road, Sherwood
Park, Wilmington, DE 19808. A reception with
light refreshments in the parish hall will
immediately follow the Mass. Certificates for 25th,

What does the Diocese do for survivors of abuse?
In accord with Article 1 of the Charter for the
Protection Children and Young People the Diocese
reaches out to survivors and their families
demonstrating a sincere commitment to their
spiritual and emotional well-being. Our first
obligation to survivors of clergy sexual abuse is
healing and reconciliation. Our Diocese has
appointed handling sexual abuse, to coordinator, a
licensed therapist/counselor with many years of
experience in handling sexual abuse, to coordinate
assistance for survivors of clergy sexual abuse.
The Survivor Assistance Coordinator speaks with
the survivor (and/or family) apologizing for the
offense, listening to the survivor’s experience, and
offering counseling, spiritual help, and providing for
therapy either through counselors at Catholic
Charities or agreeing to pay for expenses incurred
by the survivor if he/she chooses other counseling
opportunities. We are committed to survivor
outreach and their spiritual and emotional
wellbeing. The services offered by the Diocese are
in place for each survivor for as long as necessary.
