O GOD, BE MERCIFUL
TO ME A SINNER

oday’s Gospel graces us with a
beautiful prayer that can make
every day of our lives a jubilee of
mercy: “O God, be merciful to me a
sinner” (Luke 18:13). Religious Israelites
despised the tax collector who prayed it, for
collaborating with Gentile occupiers and
handling currency that bore the “divine”
emperor’s graven image. But the Pharisee’s
long-winded self-congratulation, mixed with self-righteous
condemnation, was no “prayer” at all. “The Pharisee…
spoke this prayer to himself” (18:11, emphasis added).
Praying the tax collector’s simple, sincere, succinct cry for
mercy acknowledges our own sinfulness, and “welcomes”
other sinners as brothers and sisters with whom we can
identify, even empathize, echoing Pope Francis’ famous
comment about not being the one to judge. Indeed, the
tax collector “went home justified” (18:14), that is,
restored to God’s friendship, for God’s mercy is not prize
achieved but gift received. “Let your prayer be brief: for
tax collector, prodigal son, and dying thief were all
reconciled to God by a single phrase!”

DIOS MÍO, APIÁDATE DE MI,
QUE SOY UN PECADOR
E
l Evangelio de hoy nos favorece con
una oración hermosa que puede hacer
de cada día de nuestras vidas un
jubileo de misericordia: “¡Dios mío, apiádate de
mí, que soy un pecador” (Lucas 18:13). Los
hombres religiosos israelitas (los fariseos)
despreciaban al publicano (cobrador de
impuestos) que estaba orando. Lo
despreciaban por trabajar para los romanos
que usaban una moneda que tenía grabada la imagen del emperador
“divino”. Pero el fariseo arrogante se elogiaba así mismo; una mezcla
de auto condenación, pretendiendo hacer “oración” con frases que no
lo eran para nada. “El fariseo...oraba así en su interior” (18:11, énfasis
añadido). En cambio, la oración del cobrador de impuestos era
sencilla, sincera y suplicando misericordia. Una oración que reconocía
nuestra propia pecaminosidad e invita a todos los pecadores tanto
hermanos como hermanas con quien nos podamos identificar o
incluso asemejar, haciendo eco al famoso comentario del Papa
Francisco de no ser el que juzgue. Evidentemente, el cobrador de
impuestos fue “a su casa justificado” (18:14), es decir, fue restaurada
la amistad con Dios. Porque la misericordia de Dios no es un premio al
que se tiene derecho sino un don otorgado. “Que tu oración sea corta:
porque el cobrador de impuestos, el hijo prodigo y el ladrón
crucificado al lado de Jesús, todos fueron reconciliados con Dios con
una sola frase” (San Juan Clímaco, siglo VII).

During the month of November, the Church remembers its deceased members in a special way.
Our parish will offer a special remembrance for all who have died in the LAST 12 MONTHS.
Beginning this weekend, there will be a Book of Remembrance in the Narthex for parishioners to enter the names of
deceased friends and relatives. The names written in the book will not be read,
but will be prayed for during the All Souls’ Day Mass.
Durante el mes de noviembre, la Iglesia recuerda a sus miembros fallecidos de una manera especial.
Nuestra parroquia ofrecerá una conmemoración para todos los que han fallecido en los ÚLTIMOS 12 MESES.

$10.00 donation per person. We hope to see you on
