Year of Mercy at St. Sabina
‘I have decided to announce an
Extraordinary Jubilee which has at its
centre the mercy of God. It will be a Holy
Year of Mercy. We want to live in the light
of the word of the Lord: “Be merciful, even
as your Father is merciful” (cf. Lk 6:36).’

Romero Celebration - March 13th - 12:30pm
On Sunday, March 13th our Salvadoran Community will
host our parish’s annual celebration in honor of Blessed
Bishop Oscar Romero. Mass will begin at 12:30pm and
Bishop Gregorio Rosa Chavez will celebrate the Mass.
Bishop Gregorio Rosa Chávez is the Auxiliary Bishop
from San Salvador. Bishop Rosa Chávez feels a deep
personal connection to Blessed Romero. Many see him
as the carrier of Romero’s torch of justice and peace.
Bishop Rosa Chávez is profoundly connected to the
struggles of his people. Bishop Rosa Chávez has been
the guest speaker at the Romero Celebrations in
Kansas City in 2008, 2010 and 2013. We are humbled
that he accepted the invitation once again to join us on
this 36th anniversary.
Blessed Óscar Arnulfo Romero (August 15, 1917 March 24, 1980) was a prominent Roman Catholic
priest in El Salvador during the 1960s and 1970s,
becoming Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. After
witnessing numerous violations of human rights, he
began to speak out on behalf of the poor and the
victims of repression. This led to numerous conflicts,
both with the government in El Salvador and within the
Catholic Church. After speaking out against U.S.
military support for the government of El Salvador, and
calling for soldiers to disobey orders to fire on innocent
civilians, Archbishop Romero was shot dead while
celebrating Mass at the small chapel of the cancer
hospital where he lived.
Bilingual Story Time
The Belton Library is coming to St. Sabina the second

Juan Diego Room in the Education Wing. You are
invited to bring a toy and stay for an hour of play after
Story Time.

good time to recognize that God continually calls us back to Him. He offers us the gifts of mercy and forgiveness.
Please join us as we celebrate this mercy during the sacrament of Reconciliation.

Do you have a carbon monoxide detector? Every year, more
than 20,000 Americans end up in the ER after inhaling the colorless,
odorless toxic gas. Install a carbon monoxide detector on each floor
of your home, and make sure all heating sources are properly
ventilated.
Am I getting enough Vitamin D? While doctors have believed for
years that a D deficiency can increase the risk of respiratory
infections, a 2013 study found that people with the lowest D levels
were 2.6 times more likely to develop pneumonia than those with
the highest. All it takes to reach your quota is 10 to 15 minutes in
the sun three times per week. During the winter months, please
consult your doctor for a recommendation on an oral dosage of
vitamin D.

Stewardship
“And he told them this parable: ‘There once was a
person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard,
and when he came in search of fruit on it but found
none, he said to the gardener, “For three years now
I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but
have found none. So cut it down. Why should it
exhaust the soil?” He said to him in reply, “Sir,
leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the
ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in
the future. If not you can cut it down.’”
Luke 13: 6-9
During Lent we are all called to repent and to
change. Jesus makes that call to repentance quite
clear in our Gospel Reading from Luke, which
includes the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree.
Scholars maintain that God is the owner of the fig
tree, and He looks to each of us to bear fruit, to do
good and righteous works. Are we? Do we? That,
too, is so important to us during this Lenten period.
God is very patient with us but even His patience
has a limit. God grants us this time in His mercy to
indeed repent and to change our behaviors. — See

2016 Annual Catholic Appeal
Thanks to all who have contributed to the 2016 Annual
Catholic Appeal. As of February 8th 56 families from
St. Sabina have contributed a total of $8,323.00.
Please contribute generously to “Blessed Are the
Merciful”, the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal (in past
years, the Bishop’s Annual Appeal) in support of parish
and diocesan programs and ministries. Go on-line to
www.kcsjgives.org for more information or use the

Hungering for a Healthy Start
The next stop on our CRS Rice Bowl journey is the
African nation of Rwanda, where we’re reminded to care
for the unborn. This week we pray for pregnant mothers,
that they may have the medical and nutritional support
they need to raise healthy, thriving children. Visit
crsricebowl.org for more.
Catholic Relief Services
Next week, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief
Services Collection. This collection supports six Catholic
agencies that touch more than 100 million lives around
the world. The funds from this collection help provide
food to the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and
Christ’s love and respect to all people. Next week,
please give generously to The Catholic Relief Services
Collection and help Jesus in disguise.
Second Collections
Last weekend we began taking up the special
collections after communion. On weekends we do not
have a special collection we will take up the second
collection for our many
maintenance needs that
have to be completed
soon. We will stop the
maintenance collection
hopefully by summer.
This summer we need to
repave our parking lots,
repair all the concrete
sidewalks, and re-carpet
the education wing. Any
help you can give is
greatly appreciated.
Reflection on the Readings
Each liturgical year the third,
fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent
are clustered together having their
own focus and theme. In year A,
clear and strong baptismal themes
are highlighted. In year B, the
focus is on dying and rising with
Christ. In our current year C, the
readings focus on repentance,
compassion and forgiveness.
Within this focus on God’s loving-kindness and
compassion is our need for repentance and change of
heart. God’s love is boundless, but we must desire to be
in relationship with God and work on building up that
relationship. If we choose not to, then we are left to our
own devices. Choosing to live by God’s intentions and
reaching out in love and compassion towards others are
difficult realities for all humans. Conversion of heart is
challenging and often resisted by most of us. We are not
comfortable with change because it forces us out of our
comfort zone, stretching us to think of others beside

The overall focus of today’s readings is set by the refrain of Moses, Psalm 103, along with the fig tree parable in

Reflexión Sobre las Lecturas
Cada año litúrgico el tercero,
cuarto, y quinto domingos de
Cuaresma se agrupan juntos
con su propio enfoque y
tema. En el ciclo A, temas
bautismales claras y fuertes
están resaltados. En el ciclo
B, la atención se centra en
morir y resucitar con Cristo.
En nuestro año actual, ciclo
C, las lecturas se centran en
el
arrepentimiento,
la
compasión y el perdón.
Estos domingos son también conocidos como
Domingos Escrutinios.
Si elegimos no hacerlo, entonces estamos
abandonados a nuestros propios dispositivos.
No estamos
nosotros. Sin embargo, nuestro Dios está ahí
continuamente lleno de misericordia y amor de pacto,
siempre paciente, dispuesto a escuchar, comprender y
perdonar.
