SF Community School Week of January 13, 2014 NEWS Hello families, There is a lot to be excited about at SFC – we received the results from the CLA #1 (the district’s benchmark assessment exam) and SFC had strong school-wide acceleration (students progressing beyond the expected amount) a key factor in assessing whether we are pushing students at capacity and helping those students who are behind to catch up. We had a school average of 58% of students accelerating beyond the expected growth in both math and ELA, a rate higher than the district average. Go SFC! Eat to support SFC! Patxi’s Pizza in Noe Valley will be giving a percentage of proceeds to SFC on Wednesday, January 22nd. Mark your calendars! Firefly in Noe Valley is donating 20% of proceeds to SF public schools if you eat on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday between Jan 6-29— mention SFC and we will get the proceeds. As you are likely aware, California is not administering the STAR test this year. Instead, SFUSD will be piloting the SBAC field test (the new national assessment). The testing window will be April 7 – May 16 and all students in grades 3-8 and 40% of grade 11 students will participate in the online field test. As of now, results will not be publicly released (to media, families, etc.) but will likely be available for internal use. The test must be taken on computers so the district is in the process of determining how exactly that will occur. You can find samples of the new test at www.smarterbalanced.org. It's time for the January Parent Pledge! We're asking each family to donate between $5 and $300 per month to help pay for programs like the Education Outside garden program, yard supervision, and classroom and office supplies. You can set up monthly payments or make a one-time donation at http://mysfcs.org/support-sfc/donate. You can also leave or mail a check with Ivy in the office (made out to "Project OLE"). A reminder to families that we need your support to ensure a safe and smooth drop-off and pick-up. Families cannot stop or double-park on the street. At dismissal, please find parking or circle until you see your child(ren), at which point pull over and the teacher will walk the student to the car. Teachers use circles for students to practice academic language, utilize sentence prompts, debate conceptual ideas, or articulate opinions and provide evidence to back them up. RP is an integrated part of the school day and should be at work in all academic and cultural school practices. K/1: students are writing realistic fiction, classifying and identifying the parts of plants and animals in the garden, working on characters in reading, and beginning a community study in SS/ELD. 2/3: students are beginning series and character work in reading, learning geometry, studying community issues, and writing responses to literature. 4/5: students are reading historical fiction, writing persuasive essays, studying the Gold Rush, and working on division or measurement in math. 5/6: students are writing persuasive papers, interpreting books, learning ratios and proportions, and beginning puberty class! 7/8: students are beginning the persuasive essay boot camp, learning chemical bonding, and simplifying polynomials or factoring trinomials. Garden: Hello 2014! This semester has started with a flurry of activity including many sightings of our hawk-inresidence as our K/1 team begins our investigation of animals and 2-5 hone their map making skills. Remember to join in the celebration of walk and roll to school day every 1st Wed of the month! PE: Zumba dancing fun and fitness will have the first dance in the gym on Thurs, Jan 23rd, 7:45-8:15 am. All families and students are invited! You can go at your own pace but msake sure your physician has cleared you for active dancing! Yard: Volunteers always welcome on the playground! Los maestros usan círculos para que los alumnos puedan practicar el lenguaje académico, responder a preguntas, debatir conceptos, ó articular las opiniones y las pruebas para sostenerlas. Las prácticas restaurativas son integradas en todas las prácticas académicas y culturales escolares. K/1: Los alumnos están escribiendo la ficción realista, clasificando e identificando las partes de las plantas y los animales del jardín, trabajando en los personajes en la lectura, y empezando un estudio comunitario en las ciencias sociales/desarrollo del inglés. 2/3: Los alumnos están empezando los series y trabajo sobre los personajes en la lectura, aprendiendo la geometría, estudiando asuntos comunitarios, y escribiendo reacciones a la literatura. 4/5: Los alumnos están leyendo la ficción histórica, escribiendo ensayos persuasivos, estudiando el Fiebre del Oro en California, y trabajando en la división ó las medidas en las matemáticas. 5/6: Los alumnos están escribiendo ensayos persuasivos, interpretando los libros, aprendiendo sobre proporciones, y ¡empezando la clase sobre la pubertad! 7/8: Los alumnos están empezando el campamento intensivo de los ensayos persuasivos, aprendiendo los enlaces químicos, y simplificando los polinomial ó factorizando los trinomios. Jardín: ¡Saludos 2014! Este semestre ha empezado con muchas actividades, incluyendo muchas apariciones del halcón residente, mientras el equipo K/1 empezamos la investigación de los animales y grados 2-5 perfeccionan las habilidades de hacer mapas. ¡Recuerde a juntar a nosotros en la celebración de caminar y rodar a la escuela cada primer miércoles del mes!
