This Sunday’s Reflection
- Father Stephen.
Today is the last Sunday of Easter Season and we celebrate
the feast of “The Ascension of the Lord”. The feast of the
Ascension of the Lord that we celebrate today properly
occurred last Thursday – exactly 40 days after Easter, but
because of its importance and for pastoral reasons, the
celebration is moved to this Sunday. “The Ascension of the
Lord” is a special event in the life of Jesus and an important
feast in the Church. What actually is the meaning of
Ascension and what is its significance for us today? The
Ascension of Jesus marks the end of his earthly work of
redemption. Jesus stopped appearing to his disciples and
was not with them any more in a physical sense. But it did
not mean that the mission of Jesus came to an end. In the
Scripture readings today, we hear
that
immediately
before
his
Ascension, Jesus entrusted his
mission to his disciples -“You will
be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
throughout Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth.” The
same mission is now ours, both as
individuals and as a community of
believers - as Church. The feast of
the Ascension of the Lord is the
hope of our glorification and a
guarantee to meet our Lord in
heaven. It is a reminder of our
salvation, a reminder that our true
home is in heaven. So, today, we
are challenged to look beyond this
world to the destiny which we are
to share with Christ in heaven. This
world can only be a place of
temporary refuge; a world of
passage and not a world of
permanence. We can sometimes
caught up by the assumption that
this is the only life there is,
forgetting that this temporal world
will come to an end and so will our
mortal bodies. This feast today
calls us to remember that we are eternal beings called to live
with God and all the angels and saints forever in heaven.
This feast is also a reminder for all of us, not just of what
awaits us when we die, but also what we need to do while
still alive here on earth. Jesus before his Ascension
commissioned his disciples, and us also, to be his witnesses
and carry out his mission to the ends of the earth until his
return. But before we can proclaim Jesus to others, our first
task is to make sure that we make Jesus the Lord of our
own hearts. This we can do by prayerfully reflecting on his
words and by living according to his teachings and
commandments. We have to make time to become more
and more like Christ in everything we think, say and do.
Then we can proclaim the Good News to others not only
through our words and deeds, but also though our lives, so
that Jesus will also reign in their hearts and then one day
we all will be with him in heaven.

Hoy es el último domingo del tiempo de Pascua y se celebra la
fiesta de "La Ascensión del Señor". El jueves pasado fue la fecha
oficial de la fiesta de la Ascensión del Señor, la cual se celebra
exactamente 40 días después de Pascua, pero debido a su
importancia y por razones pastorales, la celebración se trasladó a
este domingo. "La Ascensión del Señor" es un evento especial en
la vida de Jesús y una fiesta importante en la Iglesia. ¿Cuál es
realmente el significado de la Ascensión y cuál es su importancia
para nosotros hoy? La Ascensión de Jesús marca el final de su
obra de redención terrenal. Jesús dejó de aparecerse a sus
discípulos, y no volvió a estar con ellos en un sentido físico. Pero
eso no significa que la misión de Jesús llegó a su fin. En las
lecturas de hoy, nos enteramos que antes de su ascensión, Jesús
confió su misión a sus discípulos.
"Ustedes serán mis testigos en
Jerusalén, en toda Judea, en Samaria,
y hasta los últimos rincones de la tierra".
Esta misma misión es ahora la nuestra,
como individuos y como comunidad de
creyentes - como Iglesia. La fiesta de la
Ascensión del Señor es la esperanza de
nuestra glorificación y una garantía para
encontrarnos con nuestro Señor en el
cielo. Esta nos recuerda nuestra
salvación, nos recuerda que nuestro
verdadero hogar está en el cielo. Así,
que hoy, tenemos el reto de mirar más
allá de este mundo, al destino que
hemos de compartir con Cristo en el
cielo. Este mundo sólo puede ser un
lugar de refugio temporal; un mundo de
paso y no un mundo permanente. A
veces podemos estar atrapados por el
supuesto de que ésta es la única vida
que hay, olvidando que este mundo
temporal llega a su final igual que
nuestros cuerpos mortales. Esta fiesta
de hoy, nos invita a recordar que somos
seres eternos llamados a vivir con Dios
y todos los ángeles y santos para siempre en el cielo. Esta fiesta
tambien nos recuerda a todos nosotros, no solo lo que pasará
después de la muerte sino también lo que tenemos mientras
vivimos aquí en la tierra. Jesús antes de su ascensión comisionó a
sus discípulos, y a nosotros también, para ser sus testigos, y
cumplir su misión a los confines de la tierra hasta su regreso. Pero
antes que podamos anunciar a Jesús a los demás, nuestra
primera tarea, es asegurarnos de que nombramos a Jesús el
Señor en nuestros corazones. Esto lo podemos lograr mediante la
oración, reflexionando sobre sus palabras y viviendo de acuerdo
con sus enseñanzas y mandamientos. Nosotros tenemos que
dedicar mas tiempo para llegar a ser más y más como Cristo, en
todo lo que pensamos, decimos y hacemos. Entonces podemos
anunciar la Buena Nueva a los demás, no sólo a través de
nuestras palabras y acciones, sino también a través de nuestras
vidas, así Jesús también reinará en sus corazones y un día todos
nosotros estaremos con él en el cielo.

First Communion and Confirmation:
Students attending our parish school of St. John’s are
prepared for First Communion in grade two and for
Confirmation in grade seven. Parents of students
attending public schools are asked to contact Father
Stephen in September of the school year in which your
child is to make their First Communion or be confirmed.

Those who are sick and would like prayers offered at the

and would like a visit or to receive Communion from
Father Stephen please notify the office.

Catholic Women’s League June Dinner: Our annual awards dinner is coming up soon – Tuesday, June 10th at 6:00 p.m. preceded by
a Mass at 5:00 p.m. It will be catered by Kennedy’s. The cost for members will be $16 ($18.50 for non-members). We will also have a
fund-raising auction for our local council of the St. Vincent de Paul, so bring a wrapped new gift to auction with you. Please call Betty

Catholic Students Attending Public School: Do you have a
child in grade two or grade seven who is attending a public
elementary school? The sacraments of Reconciliation and First
Communion are normally received while our students are in
grade two and the Sacrament of Confirmation is normally
received in grade seven. If your child is to receive either their
First Communion or the Sacrament of Confirmation this year, and
attends a public school, please contact Father Stephen for the
arrangements can be made for the appropriate sacramental
preparation.
