GOD’S WORD TODAY
Today’s Gospel presents us with a scene that is echoed
time and time again in our society. From an early age,
most of us have been encouraged to be first-first in line,
first in the class, first to be picked for the team. This encouragement continues throughout our lives. Being first is
fundamentally about power there is absolutely nothing
wrong with being first. The problems set in when we use
the power of being first to manipulate and use the people
we consider somehow “beneath” us. So many problems of
our world and church revolve around this kind of abuse
of power. Let us pray that today’s Gospel, which addresses
these issues head on, will inspire all to use their power in
ways that build up rather than tear down and destroy.

El Evangelio de hoy nos presenta una escena que una y
otra vez se hace eco en nuestra sociedad. Desde tempranaedad la mayoría de nostros hemos sido estimulados para ser los primeros, primero en la fila, primero
en la clase, Primero en ser seleccionado para el equipo.
Esta clase de estímulo continua a través de toda nuestra
vida. Ser el primero tiene que ver fundamentalmente con
el poder. Ser el primero no tiene absolutamente nanda de
malo. Los problemas comienzan cuando usamos el poder
que nos da ser el primero para manipular y usar a las
personas que consideramos estar” “por debajo” de
nosotros. Muchos de los problemas de nuestro mundo y
de nuestra Iglesia se centran alrededdor de esta clase de
abuso de poder. Oremos para que el Evangelio de hoy,
que enfrenta sin ambagesestos asuntos, insire a todos a
usar su poder de manera que construya y no destruya.

God’s child, he will help him, and will deliver him from the
hand of his adversaries. Let us test him with insult and torture,
so that we may find out how gentle he is, and make trial of his
forbearance. Let us condemn him to a shameful death, for,
according to what he says, he will be protected.”
