MERCY MOMENTS
BY: DEACON TOM DRISCOLL
The second spiritual work of mercy is to instruct the ignorant, which ultimately is derived from Jesus’
very specific command to His disciples: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have
commanded you.” (Mt. 28:19-20.) While there are those in the Church with varying shares in its teaching
mandate – bishops, priests, deacons and catechists – the responsibility is also shared by the baptized to
evangelize their families, co-workers and people they encounter. But we cannot evangelize what we do
not know. Indeed, this work of mercy implies the prerequisite not only that we know what we teach, but
since it would be very bad to mislead someone with the wrong information, this work of mercy requires
that we know and share only the truth of the faith. This is where the great gift of the Church is
manifested in our daily lives. Her teaching is always the certain and reliable presentation of Divine
Revelation and the truths of the faith, and since the publication of the Catechism that teaching is readily
available to anyone seeking to know what and why we believe what we do. For those perhaps intimidated by the thought of
cracking open the Catechism, our bishop, priests, deacons and catechists are capable resources for responding to faith
questions.
Mercy Challenge for the week: Learn the fourteen corporal and spiritual works of mercy and show your family and friends
what they mean.
MOMENTOS DE MISERICORDIA
BY: DEACON TOM DRISCOLL
