In last Sunday’s Column, I enumerated what are normally called “the Commandments of the Church.” They are meant to strengthen us in our resolve to live an authentic Christian life in the Catholic Church. The fifth and last of these “commandments” reads: You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church. Over the decades, innumerable parishioners have taken this precept to heart, and have sought to assist, to the best of their ability, in the Church’s Mission to bring souls closer to Christ. This has afforded us to possibility to celebrate Mass in a beautiful and artistically-tasteful Church, hold retreats and meetings in a building that originally was a convent, operate an Elementary School which also holds sporting, social and religious events, and even get buried on sacred ground! While financial pressures impel many families and individuals today to contribute less than their parents did, I have to compliment those parishioners who go beyond contributing their left-overs. The recent We Are Living Stones Capital Campaign has been touching in the sense that a wide-array of parishioners (U.S.-born and immigrants, young families and elderly people, well-to-do people and families living from pay-check to pay-check) have felt the call to participate and truly be “Living Stones.” The following is a snapshot of the Campaign as of August 19th): Parish Campaign Goal $353, 152 Amount Pledged $313,726 (88.83% of goal) Amount Received – $103,007 Number of Pledges 164 Amount given as tithe to the poor - $30,000 Parish Portion already received – $36,504 Our Parish has already benefitted greatly from this Campaign. In the coming days, work is scheduled to begin on replacing an old and inefficient boiler in the Parish Retreat House with a new gas-powered highly-efficient unit. This project is being underwritten by the Campaign. Furthermore, two other projects – one completed and the other one not yet – are being funded by a generous grant from the Archdiocese of Newark, thanks to the We Are Living Stones Campaign: (i) the installation of an Air-Conditioning system in the Convent Chapel (we no longer have to celebrate the evening Masses in a sweltering heat), and (ii) an overhaul of the School boiler, which will be undertaken soon. I encourage those parishioners who as yet have not made a pledge to the Campaign to seriously consider doing so. There are still more than two years to make good on one’s pledge – it does not have to be completed immediately. Pledge Cards are still available at the back of the Church for your convenience. You might even have received one in the mail and it is still on the “to do” list. It is heartening to see that the first $30,000 collected by our parishioners (and $7,824,406 at an Archdiocesan level) have already been donated as a tithe for projects and causes that will help the poor and needy. That is in keeping with our Blessed Lord’s injunction, “Whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did unto me” (Mt 25:40). May this Capital Campaign be a way for each one of us to express our gratitude to the Lord for His goodness to us, as we strive to be the Living Stones that St. Peter speaks about in his First Epistle. A blessed Sunday to all, Fr. Ivan Sciberras [email protected] Page Three 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 21, 2016 Sunday Regular Collec on: $5,333.00 Mission Appeal: $3,209.00 $6,100 are needed weekly to meet our opera ng budget. Proper A re for Mass As the hot weather has arrived, we would like to remind everyone the Eucharist is a sacred celebra on that calls for adequate a re, which should be fes ve and modest. Fes ve because of the beauty of the Mass and Modest so we are in tuned with the sacredness of the church and help other worshippers to focus on God, and not our bodies. Fes ve a re would be be er served without jeans, t-shirts and sport clothing. Modesty for Men: encouraged to come without shorts or sleeveless shirts. OFFERING MASSES FOR THE REPOSE OF SOULS IN PURGATORY It is customary not only to visit the graves of our dearly departed, but also to have Masses offered for the eternal repose of their souls. Having a Mass offered for the repose of a soul, and offering our own prayers, is more beneficial and comfor ng than a card or bouquet of flowers. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC): “From the beginning the church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharis c sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may a ain the bea fic vision of God” (CCC #1032). Contact the Parish Office to have a Mass offered for a soul who may need your prayers to be released from Purgatory! THE 2017 MASS BOOK IS NOW OPEN. VISIT THE RECTORY OFFICE TO SCHEDULE MASSES FOR YOUR DECEASED LOVED ONES. Page Five Pope invites faithful to examine their consciences “I’d like to make you a proposal,” the Pope said to the pilgrims in the square, and invited them to think in silence for a moment about the things they have inside that prevent them from passing over the threshold: pride, arrogance, sin. “And then, let us think about that other door, the one open to God’s mercy and He is waiting on the other side to forgive us,” Francis added. “The Lord offers us many opportunities to save ourselves and to enter through the door of salvation,” the Pope continued. “This door is an opportunity that must not be wasted: we must not make an academic discourse of salvation, as did the man who questioned Jesus, but we must seize the opportunities for salvation. Because at a certain moment "the landlord got up and locked the door" (v.25), as mentioned in the Gospel. But if God is good and loves us, why does he close the door - he will close the door at a certain point? Because our life is not a video game or a soap opera; our life is serious and the goal to achieve is important: eternal salvation. To the Virgin Mary, Door of Heaven, we ask help so that we seize the opportunities that the Lord gives us to cross the threshold of faith and thus to enter into a wide road: it is the path of salvation that can accommodate all those who allow themselves to love and be loved (it: si lasciano coinvolgere dall’amore). It is love which saves; the love that is already here on earth is a source of happiness to those who, in meekness, patience and justice, forget themselves and give themselves to others, especially the weakest.” TWITTER @PONTIFEX 08/21/2016 Mercy does not just mean being a “good person” nor is it mere sentimentality. It is the measure of our authenticity as disciples of Jesus. Speaking to pilgrims gathered for the Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, August 21, 2016. INTENTIONS OF THE HOLY FATHER FOR AUGUST 2016 Universal: Sports: That sports may be an opportunity for friendly encounters between peoples and may contribute to peace in the world. Evangelization: Living the Gospel: That Christians may live the Gospel, giving witness to faith, honesty, and love of neighbor. ST. PETER’S SCHOOL Page Six C.C.D.
