For well over one hundred years this holiday has been observed in the United States; first on the local level in a few cities, later on the state level and still later, nationally. It has been a day given over to the celebration of human labor and the benefits it has brought to families, communities, and the nation itself. In earlier days, there were giant parades made up mostly of various workers’ unions with bands, and at the end, the inevitable speeches by a variety of officials. The rest of the day would be given over to picnics and ball games. Today, some of those elements remain, but for many of us, the focus is on the holiday and the opportunity it affords to be away from one’s work and to enjoy family and maybe even a picnic and a last swim of the season in a public pool. This year, we are told, the economy is looking better than it has over the past several years. Unemployment is down nationally to around five percent, businesses are picking up and, in some areas housing construction can’t keep up with the demand. What a pleasant change. Or is it? Katheanne Shea) Pope Francis’ September Prayer Intentions Opportunities for the young. That opportunities for education and employment may increase for all young people. Catechists. That catechists may give witness by living in a way consistent One of the disturbing things about this rosy picture is that it doesn’t depict the whole scene. Realistically, a major reason for low unemployment is that many job seekers have given up. There are other reasons as well. As the United States Catholic Bishops’ Labor Day Statement reminds us, too many families are still struggling because of multiple jobs and wage stagnation as costs for food, housing, transportation and education mount up. (See insert in today Bulletin.) Also missing from the picture are the 2 million AfricanAmericans who are currently unemployed and looking for work. Among those who are working, a disproportionate number have lower-wage jobs when compared to white, Asians and Hispanics. Racial prejudice definitely plays its heavy-handed role here. In his recent encyclical, Laudato Si’, Pope Francis states: “Work is a necessity, part of the meaning of life on this earth, a path to growth, human development and personal fulfillment.” If that is true for everyone, then you and I and countless others still have a lot of “painting” to do. Me he sentido muy feliz. P.
