Actividades Actuales
-Acompáñenos para rezar el Santo Rosario los sábados,

On–Going Activity Reminders
-Join us to pray the Holy Rosary on Saturdays,
immediately after the 9:00am Mass, in honor of

Rosary after the 9am Mass.
-The Sacred Heart of Jesus Society meets the
1st Sunday of every month following the 11:00am
Mass.

St. Hilary, Bishop and Doctor of the Church/

In the early centuries of Christianity, there were still many people
who did not believe in God as we do. They believed that there were
many gods, some more powerful than others. These people were not
bad. They just did not know any better. They were called pagans.
St. Hilary was born into just such a family in Poitiers, a town in
France. His family was rich and well-known. Hilary received a good
education. He married and raised a family.Through his studies,
Hilary learned that a person should practice patience, kindness,
justice and these good acts would be rewarded in the life after death.
Hilary's studies also made him realize that there could only be one
God who is eternal, all-powerful and good. He read the Bible for the
first time. When he came to the story of Moses and the burning
bush, Hilary was very impressed by the name God gave himself: I
AM WHO AM. Hilary read the writings of the prophets, too. Then
he read the whole New Testament. By the time he finished, he was
completely converted to Christianity and was baptized.
Hilary was such a good Catholic that he was made bishop. This did
not make his life easy because the emperor was interfering in
Church matters. When Hilary refused to do wrong as the emperor
commanded him, he was sent away from the country.
Hilary did not let this worry him, instead with great courage and
patience he accepted the emperor's punishment calmly and used the
time to write books explaining the faith to the pagans.
Since he was becoming famous and many
pagans were converting to Christianity,
Hilary's enemies asked the emperor to
send him back to his hometown. There he
would not be able to create too much
trouble.
So Hilary returned to Poitiers in 360. He
continued writing and teaching the
people about the faith. Hilary died eight
years later, at the age of fifty-two. His
books are used by the Church even today.
That is why he is called a Doctor of the
Church.

St. Anthony of Egypt, abbot/
San Antonio de Egipto, abad
17 de enero
Conocemos la vida del abad Antonio, cuyo nombre significa
"floreciente" y al que la tradición llama el Grande, principalmente a
través de la biografía redactada por su discípulo y admirador, san
Atanasio, a fines del siglo IV.
Este escrito, fiel a los estilos literarios de la época y ateniéndose a
las concepciones entonces vigentes acerca de la espiritualidad,
subraya en la vida de Antonio -más allá de los datos maravillososla permanente entrega a Dios en un género de consagración del cual
él no es históricamente el primero, pero sí el prototipo, y esto no
sólo por la inmensa influencia de la obrita de Atanasio.
En su juventud, Antonio, que era egipcio e hijo de acaudalados
campesinos, se sintió conmovido por las
palabras de Jesús, que le llegaron en el
marco de una celebración eucarística: "Si
quieres ser perfecto, ve y vende todo lo
que tienes y dalo a los pobres...".
Así lo hizo el rico heredero, reservando
sólo parte para una hermana, a la que
entregó, parece, al cuidado de unas
vírgenes consagradas.
Llevó inicialmente vida apartada en su
propia aldea, pero pronto se marchó al
desierto, adiestrándose en las prácticas
eremíticas junto a un cierto Pablo,
anciano experto en la vida solitaria.
En su busca de soledad y persiguiendo el desarrollo de su
experiencia, llegó a fijar su residencia entre unas antiguas tumbas.
¿Por qué esta elección?. Era un gesto profético, liberador. Los
hombres de su tiempo -como los de nuestros días - temían
desmesuradamente a los cementerios, que creían poblados de
demonios. La presencia de Antonio entre los abandonados sepulcros
era un claro mentís a tales supersticiones y proclamaba, a su
manera, el triunfo de la resurrección. Todo -aún los lugares que más
espantan a la naturaleza humana - es de Dios, que en Cristo lo ha
redimido todo; la fe descubre siempre nuevas fronteras donde
extender la salvación.
Pronto la fama de su ascetismo se propagó y se le unieron muchos
fervorosos imitadores, a los que organizó en comunidades de
oración y trabajo. Dejando sin embargo esta exitosa obra, se retiró a
una soledad más estricta en pos de una caravana de beduinos que se
internaba en el desierto.
No sin nuevos esfuerzos y desprendimientos personales, alcanzó la
cumbre de sus dones carismáticos, logrando conciliar el ideal de la
vida solitaria con la dirección de un monasterio cercano, e incluso
viajando a Alejandría para terciar en las interminables controversias
arriano-católicas que signaron su siglo.
Sobre todo, Antonio, fue padre de monjes, demostrando en sí mismo
la fecundidad del Espíritu. Una multisecular colección de anécdotas,
conocidas como "apotegmas" o breves ocurrencias que nos ha
legado la tradición, lo revela poseedor de una espiritualidad incisiva,
casi intuitiva, pero siempre genial, desnuda como el desierto que es
su marco y sobre todo implacablemente fiel a la sustancia de la
revelación evangélica. Se conservan algunas de sus cartas, cuyas
ideas principales confirman las que Atanasio le atribuye en su
"Vida". Antonio murió muy anciano, hace el año 356, en las laderas
del monte Colzim, próximo al mar Rojo; al ignorarse la fecha de su
nacimiento, se le ha adjudicado una improbable longevidad, aunque
ciertamente alcanzó una edad muy avanzada.
La figura del abad delineó casi definitivamente el ideal monástico
que perseguirían muchos fieles de los primeros siglos.
No siendo hombre de estudios, no obstante, demostró con su vida lo
esencial de la vida monástica, que intenta ser precisamente una
esencialización de la práctica cristiana: una vida bautismal
despojada de cualquier aditamento.
Para nosotros, Antonio encierra un mensaje aún válido y
actualísimo: el monacato del desierto continúa siendo un desafío: el
del seguimiento extremo de Cristo, el de la confianza irrestricta en
el poder del Espíritu de Dios.
