Prominent Catholic writer from the last century, GK Chesterton, said “When a man stops believing in God he doesn’t then
believe in nothing, he believes anything”.
El destacado escritor católico del siglo pasado, GK Chesterton,
dijo “Cuando un hombre deja de creer en Dios, entonces él no
cree en nada, él cree cualquier cosa”.
People always have a choice whether to believe in God or not.
God doesn’t force us for that is not the way of love. However
the warning from GK Chesterton is quite clear: without God’s
guiding presence in our life we are all quite capable of believing absolutely anything, even the worst of things.
La gente siempre tiene la opción de creer en Dios o no. Dios no
nos obliga porque esa no es la manera de amar. Sin embargo la
advertencia de GK Chesterton es muy clara: sin la presencia de

With no belief in Jesus we have no moral compass, we can
justify anything we want to and say with confidence that it is
okay.

If we choose not to believe in God, let us be clear about the
consequences: if we reject Jesus we will make a God out of

To believe in “anything” is to be lost. To believe in Jesus is to
be “found”.

Who was Francis P. Sullivan?
Every beautiful stained glass window in our church shows a name, usually that of the donor. The huge “Nativity” window, fourth
from the doors on the east side, says “Memorial to the parents of Mr. and Mrs. Francis P. Sullivan.” And the “Resurrection” window above the St. Joseph exit, second from the altar, says “In memory of Francis P. Sullivan.” Who was he? And who were his,
and his wife’s, parents?
Francis and his brothers owned Sullivan Oil Co., which provided lamp fuel for homes and street lights before electricity. He
was also a lawyer, but primarily an entrepreneur who invested well. His wife, Susan Sharp Sullivan, kept the books, and was also
shrewd with money. He was in a position to donate the “Nativity” window when our brick church was built in 1916, and his widow Susan donated the “Resurrection” window in his memory when the church was expanded in 1934 (he died in 1926).
We don’t know much about Francis’ parents, except that they were Irish immigrants and probably lived in St. Patrick’s parish (now called Old St. Pat’s). But Susan Sharp’s parents were important in our parish history.
John Sharp emigrated from England as a young man, and settled in Evanston in 1855. Two years later, he married an Irish
lass, Hannah Murphy, and together they had seven children. By 1860, John owned the only meat packing plant in the area, and
was successful in business. He and Hannah were involved in founding St.Mary’s parish in Evanston. Sadly, he died at the age of
33 in 1869.
In 1875, Hannah moved with her six children (Joseph died in infancy) to Rogers Park and opened a general store at Clark
and Greenleaf. As her children grew, they became heavily involved in the community. James Sharp became the first lamplighters, and Edward Sharp became village clerk and station agent for the railroad.
By 1892, the need for a new parish in Rogers Park prompted the first meeting of area Catholics, in Hannah Sharp’s
home. The first donation came from the Sharp family, and St. Jerome, a modest wooden church, opened at Morse and Paulina in
1894.
Hannah died on July 28th, 1903. We know the date, because it is engraved on the oldest chalice in our parish, donated in her
memory by Susan and Francis Sullivan.
Hannah’s descendants multiplied. Although John. Jr. and his wife had no children, and daughter Hannah Catherine became
a. nun, the others -- James, Edward, Elizabeth (Mrs. Peter Rowe), and Susan (Mrs. Francis P. Sullivan) -- each had children. Edward, in fact, had 18, including the first boy ordained at St. Jerome.
On Saturday, June 25, more than 80 descendants of John and Hannah Sharp celebrate a 10:00 a.m. reunion Mass at St. Jerome, followed by a visit to family graves in Calvary Cemetery, a tour of Rogers Park, and a family dinner. Welcome back!

Caridad en Cicero. Deseo agradecer al P. Jeremías por su liderazgo, su amistad y su ministerio. Sus consejos los tendré siempre presentes en mi vida sacerdotal. Agradezco también a
los grupos y movimientos que forman la comunidad parroquial. San Jerónimo es una Iglesia
vibrante y joven. Gracias por recibirme con los brazos abiertos, por su cariño, su amistad y
su oración. Les tendré presentes en mi memoria y en mis oraciones y me encomiendo a las
suyas.

As everyone knows on July 1, 2016 I will take possession of Our Lady of Charity in Cicero, as its new pastor.
I would like to thank Fr. Jeremy for his leadership, his friendship and his ministry. It was a rich and invaluable experience to work with him. I would like to thank also the different groups that make up saint Jerome’s community,
thank you for being so welcome, for your love, friendship and prayer. I will keep you in my heart and hold you in my
prayers, please do the same for me.

Parish Sticker/Calcomanía Parroquial
One of our families, the Rodriguez family has designed and produced a parish sticker or “bumper sticker” for your car. They
want to sell these stickers to raise money for a specific project. That project is the floor in St Joseph’s Hallway (The hallway that
leads to the sacristy door). Currently the floor is bare and in need of renewing. The plan is to cover the floor with ceramic tiles.
Please join us all at St Jerome and buy a parish sticker from the Rodriguez family at Mass during the coming weeks. The cost of
the sticker is $20.
The stickers say quite simply “Proud Family of St Jerome”. Let’s unite with the Rodriguez Family as they work to fix up our
parish home, one sticker at a time!
Una de nuestras familias, la Familia Rodríguez, ha diseñado y producido una calcomanía parrroquial o “calcomanía para la
defensa” de su carro. Ellos quieren vender estas calcomanías para recaudar fondos para un proyecto específico. Ese proyecto es

30th Annual Social Action Summer Institute at St. Xavier University
Join us for the 30th annual Social Action Summer Institute July 17-21 at St. Xavier University for “Who is my Neighbor? Discipleship in the Year of Mercy.” We will examine issues facing our neighbors including racism, violence, and
poverty. Participants will come away with resources and tools for use at the parish level as well as within other aspects of
public life. You may register for single days or for the full conference. There will be workshops, keynote sessions, liturgies
and one full day for field trips to visit organizations funded by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Full Registration: $500 includes tuition, lodging and most meals.
