Primera Lectura: Amos 6: 1, 4-7
Esto dice el Señor todopoderoso: "¡Ay de ustedes, los que se
sienten seguros en Sión y los que ponen su confianza en el
monte sagrado de Samaria! Se reclinan sobre divanes adornados con marfil, se recuestan sobre almohadones para comer
los corderos del rebaño y las terneras en engorda. Canturrean
al son del arpa, creyendo cantar como David. Se atiborran de
vino, se ponen los perfumes más costosos, pero no se preocupan por las desgracias de sus hermanos. Por eso irán al destierro a la cabeza de los cautivos y se acabará la orgía de los disolutos".

Alabemos al Señor, que viene a salvarnos.
Segunda Lectura: 1 Timothy 6: 11-16
Hermano: Tú, como hombre de Dios, lleva una vida de rectitud, piedad, fe, amor, paciencia y mansedumbre. Lucha en el
noble combate de la fe, conquista la vida eterna a la que has
sido llamado y de la que hiciste tan admirable profesión ante
numerosos testigos. Ahora, en presencia de Dios, que da vida

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los fariseos: "Había un hombre
rico, que se vestía de púrpura y telas finas y banqueteaba espléndidamente cada día. Y un mendigo, llamado Lázaro, yacía
a la entrada de su casa, cubierto de llagas y ansiando llenarse
con las sobras que caían de la mesa del rico. Y hasta los perros
se acercaban a lamerle las llagas. Sucedió, pues, que murió el
mendigo y los ángeles lo llevaron al seno de Abraham. Murió
también el rico y lo enterraron. Estaba éste en el lugar de castigo, en medio de tormentos, cuando levantó los ojos y vio a
lo lejos a Abraham y a Lázaro junto a él. Entonces gritó: 'Padre
Abraham, ten piedad de mí. Manda a Lázaro que moje en
agua la punta de su dedo y me refresque la lengua, porque me
torturan estas llamas'. Pero Abraham le contestó: 'Hijo, recuerda que en tu vida recibiste bienes y Lázaro, en cambio,
males. Por eso él goza ahora de consuelo, mientras que tú
sufres tormentos. Además, entre ustedes y nosotros se abre
un abismo inmenso, que nadie puede cruzar, ni hacia allá ni
hacia acá'. El rico insistió: 'Te ruego, entonces, padre
Abraham, que mandes a Lázaro a mi casa, pues me quedan
allá cinco hermanos, para que les advierta y no acaben también ellos en este lugar de tormentos'. Abraham le dijo:
'Tienen a Moisés y a los profetas; que los escuchen'. Pero el
rico replicó: 'No, padre Abraham. Si un muerto va a decírselo,
entonces sí se arrepentirán'. Abraham repuso: 'Si no escuchan
a Moisés y a los profetas, no harán caso, ni aunque resucite un
muerto'".

Thus says the Lord the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent
in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on
their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and
calves from the stall! Improvising to the music of the harp,
like David, they devise their own accompaniment. They drink
wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils;
yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph! Therefore,
now they shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton
revelry shall be done away with.

But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith,

Jesus said to the Pharisees: “There was a rich man who
dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named
Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his
fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even
used to come and lick his sores. When the poor man died, he
was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The
rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld,
where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father
Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his
finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.' Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember
that you received what was good during your lifetime while
Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between
us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone
from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or
from your side to ours.’ He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send
him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he
may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.'
But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets.
Let them listen to them.’ He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham,

VIDA MÁS ALLÁ DE LA MUERTE
LIFE BEYOND DEATH
La parábola del evangelio de hoy es una de las mas
conocidas. Forma parte de la cultura popular el recuerdo de aquel personaje mísero que solicitaba limosna a las puertas del rico. Hoy siguen existiendo muchos
Lázaros que solicitan ayuda a las puertas de los que
podrían ayudar, pero que están demasiado concentrados en su propio mundo como para darse cuenta
que hay a su alrededor. Hay inmigrantes que vienen en
busca de una vida digna. Hay personas sin trabajos, sin
techo, sin acceso a la educación. También sigue habiendo muchos ricos que banquetean sin pensar en lo
que sucede más allá de sus puertas.
The parable in today’s gospel is one of the most well
known. The memory of the miserable character who
begged for alms at the doors of the rich is part of the
popular culture. Today there are still many Lazarus’ asking for help at the doors of those who can help, but are
too focused on their world to notice their surroundings.
There are immigrants who live in search of a worthy life.
There are people out of work, homeless, without access
to education. There are also many rich, feasting without
considering what happens beyond their doors.
Posiblemente la mayoría de nosotros no estemos en los
extremos. Pero en esa posición entre Lázaro y Epulón
comprendemos mejor que no podemos vivir una vida
en la que miremos solamente a nuestros propios intereses y preocupaciones. Lázaro son los pobres que a veces vemos en las calles; pero también es cualquier persona cercana necesitada de cariño y atención. En muchas ocasiones no se trata de dar dinero, sino de ofrecer tiempo, compañía, una palabra de aliento, de
comprensión. Vivir en cristiano significa abrir los ojos
para ver más allá de nosotros mismos; es interesarse
por los demás hasta dar la vida. Como Jesús.

¿Procuro saber qué necesidades existen a mi alrededor? ¿Cómo trato de solucionarlas?
Most of us are probably not in these extremes. But in this
contrast between Lazarus and Dives, we understand
that we cannot live a life in which we look only towards
our own interests and concerns. Lazarus is the poor that
we see in the streets; but it is also anyone close who is in
need of love and attention. Frequently, it is not about
giving money, but offering time, companionship, a
word of encouragement and understanding. To live as
a Christian means to open our eyes to see beyond ourselves; it is to be concerned with others to the point of
giving our life. Like Jesus.

Do I try to know what needs exists around me? How do I
try to solve them?

Con este título el pontífice reconoce que la doctrina propuesta
por Teresa del Niño Jesús y de la Santa Faz puede ser un punto
de referencia para todos los cristianos del mundo no sólo porque se adecua perfectamente a la verdad, sino también porque ofrece nueva luz sobre los misterios de la fe. A continuación el obispo de Roma explicó la importancia del mensaje de
Teresa para la sociedad de que se propone cruzar el umbral
del tercer milenio: «En una cultura racionalista y demasiado a
menudo invadida por un materialismo práctico ella opone con
una sencillez que desarma "la pequeña vía" que conduce al
secreto de toda existencia: el Amor divino que envuelve y penetra toda la aventura humana». «En un tiempo como el nuestro, caracterizado por la cultura de lo efímero y del hedonismo, esta nueva Doctora de la Iglesia se muestra dotada de una
singular eficacia para esclarecer el espíritu y el corazón de los
que tienen sed de verdad y de amor». Santa Teresa de Lisieux,
penetrando en el espíritu del Evangelio y la pasión de la reformadora del Carmelo, santa Teresa de Ávila, profundizó la mística centrada en el amor, que ella llamó la «pequeña
vía de la infancia espiritual», experiencia íntima que
recogió en su libro «Historia de un alma», traducido a
50 idiomas. Sus escritos aportan, entre otras cosas, la
experiencia espiritual de los dos últimos años de su
vida, debatidos en medio de la enfermedad que la llevó a la tumba, en la que no faltó la prueba de la duda y
de la crisis de fe.
On October 1, Catholics around the world honor the life of St.
Thérèse of the Child Jesus, or St. Thérèse of Lisieux on her
feast day. “Charity gave me the key to my vocation… My vocation is Love!” Thérèse offered herself as a sacrificial victim to
the merciful Love of God on June 9, 1895, the feast of the
Most Holy Trinity and the following year, on the night between Holy Thursday and Good Friday, she noticed the first
symptoms of Tuberculosis, the illness which would lead to her
death. Thérèse recognized in her illness the mysterious visitation of the divine Spouse and welcomed the suffering as an
answer to her offering the previous year. She also began to
undergo a terrible trial of faith which lasted until her death a
year and a half later. “Her last words, ‘My God, I love you,’ are
the seal of her life,” said Pope John Paul II. Since her death,
millions have been inspired by her ‘little way’ of loving God
and neighbor. Many miracles have been attributed to her intercession. She had predicted during her earthly life that “My
Heaven will be spent doing good on Earth.” Saint Thérèse was
proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul
II in 1997 - 100 years after her death at the age of 24.
She is only the third woman to be so proclaimed, after
Saint Catherine of Siena and Saint Teresa of Avila. St.
Thérèse wrote once, 'You know well enough that Our
Lord does not look so much at the greatness of our
actions, nor even at their difficulty, but at the love
with which we do them."

Amos castiga a personas religiosas “confiadas” (6:1, 5)
que ignoran la caída de la cultura, de la nación, de la
religión (6:6). En la parábola de Jesús esa confianza es
la perdición del hombre rico. Él no lastima o perjudica
a Lázaro, tampoco le niega las sobras ni pide que lo
quiten de la entrada de su casa. Y ese es el punto principal que Jesús menciona. El hombre rico no hizo ningún mal
a Lázaro, pero tampoco hizo algo bueno por Lázaro. Solo
después de la muerte, separados por “un abismo inmenso” (Lucas 16:26), pudo el hombre rico ver a Lázaro, a quien
no se atrevió a verlo mientras vivió, justo ante sus ojos. Así
como los cinco hermanos que quedaban en la casa del hombre rico (16:27–28), nosotros los que vivimos en la Iglesia
todavía tenemos tiempo para ver a ese alguien, a Jesús que
está a la entrada de nuestra puerta y que es tiempo para
hacer algo. ¿Quién, practica, concreta y específicamente es
Lázaro en mi vida? ¿Qué puedo hacer por ese Jesús de carne
y hueso durante este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia?

La economía debe servir al pueblo y no al revés. El
trabajo es más que una forma de ganarse la vida, es
una forma de participar continuamente en la creación de Dios. Si se ha de proteger la dignidad del trabajo, entonces debe respetarse los derechos básicos
de los trabajadores-el derecho a un trabajo productivo, a salarios adecuados y justos, a organizar sindicatos y a unirse a ellos, a la propiedad privada y a la
iniciativa económica.

El trabajo es, como se ha dicho, una obligación, es decir, un
deber, por parte del hombre… El hombre debe trabajar, tanto porque el Creador ha ordenado, y por causa de su propia
humanidad, lo que requiere el trabajo con el fin de mantener
y desarrollar. El hombre debe trabajar por respeto a los demás, especialmente a su propia familia, pero también para la
sociedad a la que pertenece, el país en el que vive, y toda la
familia humana de la que es miembro, ya que él es el heredero del trabajo de generaciones y, al mismo tiempo partícipe
de la construcción del futuro de los que vendrán después de
él en la sucesión de la historia.
Todas las personas tienen el derecho a la iniciativa económica, al trabajo productivo , a salarios justos y beneficios, a condiciones dignas de trabajo, así como para organizar y unirse a
los sindicatos u otras asociaciones. Todas las personas tienen
derecho al trabajo, a la oportunidad de desarrollar sus cualidades y personalidad al ejercer su profesión, a una remuneración equitativa, para que ellos y sus familias "puedan llevar
una vida digna a nivel material, social, cultural y espiritual" y a
asistencia en caso de necesidad a causa de enfermedad o
edad avanzada.

La próxima semana: La Solidaridad
Amos punishes religious people who, “comfortably
complacent” (6:1, 5), ignore the unfolding collapse
of culture, nation, religion (6:6). In Jesus’ parable,
such complacency becomes the rich man’s undoing. He neither hurt nor harmed Lazarus, neither
denied him leftovers nor ordered him removed.
That is Jesus’ devastating point. The rich man did nothing wrong to Lazarus; he just did nothing at all good for
him. Only in death, separated by “a great chasm” (Luke
16:26), could the rich man finally see Lazarus, whom he
had failed to see in life, right before his eyes. Like the
rich man’s “five brothers still in my father’s house” (16:27
–28), we who are alive in the Church still have time to see
that same Someone, Jesus, lying neglected right at our
door—and time to do something. Who, specifically, concretely, practically, is Lazarus in my life? What can I do for
that Jesus-in-the-flesh during this Jubilee Year of Mercy?
DIGNITY OF WORK AND
THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS
The economy must serve people, not the other
way around. Work is more than a way to make a
living; it is a form of continuing participation in
Gods creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be
respected--the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative.
Work is, as has been said, an obligation, that is to say, a
duty, on the part of man. . . Man must work, both because
the Creator has commanded it and because of his own
humanity, which requires work in order to be maintained
and developed. Man must work out of regard for others,
especially his own family, but also for the society he belongs to, the country of which he is a child, and the whole
human family of which he is a member, since he is the heir
to the work of generations and at the same time a sharer
in building the future of those who will come after him in
the succession of history.
All people have the right to economic initiative, to productive work, to just wages and benefits, to decent working
conditions, as well as to organize and join unions or other associations. All people have the right to work, to a
chance to develop their qualities and their personalities in
the exercise of their professions, to equitable remuneration which will enable them and their families "to lead a
worthy life on the material, social, cultural and spiritual
level" and to assistance in case of need arising from sickness or age.

MAYWOOD EDUCATION FAIR

In collaboration with the City of Maywood and St. Rose of Lima, Catholic Church, graduate students from the Department
of Educational Leadership at California State University, Fullerton will host the 8th Annual Education
Fair on Saturday: October 15th from 11:00 am to
3:00 pm at St. Rosa de Lima. The fair will consist of
activities and workshops for students, parents, and
community members to learn about the process of
going to college including how to apply for college, career and
vocational occupations, and the financial aid process.
This FREE event allows students from kindergarten to High
School and parents to explore higher education options. There
will be free food, giveaways and an award ceremony for this
year’s scholarship recipients.
