Londres.

Y casi me tropecé con Alejandro.

¡Qué bonitas vistas desde aquí! Ha sido
buena idea venir a Valldemossa a tomar un
helado.
Rory:
Sí, es muy bonito ¡pero sabes, estoy muy
cansado! ¿Cómo lo llevas tú? Estamos
trabajando demasiado… ¡solo quiero estar
en la playa, y hacer snorkel!
María:
Yo también estoy agotada, hacer dos turnos
seguidos es demasiado. Pero creo que
mañana ya vendrá a trabajar mi compañero,
hoy me ha mandado un mensaje de texto y
me ha dicho que ya se encuentra mejor.
Rory:
María, ¿sabes una cosa? We need to think
about the future. Deberíamos sentarnos y
pensar en nuestro futuro… en dos semanas
nuestra vida ha cambiado un montón y si
queremos ir a otro país tenemos que
prepararnos...we need to gear up for it, no?
María:
Sí, deberíamos ponernos las pilas.
Rory:
Exacto, ¡ponerse las pilas!
María:
Voy a hacer una lista de países a los que me
gustaría ir… y podríamos ir a la biblioteca a
recopilar información.
Rory:
Esto… Yo estuve ayer y tomé prestadas
unas cuantas guías. Las tengo en mi

mientras cenamos ¿podemos echarles un

María:
Sí, se dice así. Podemos echar un vistazo,
por supuesto. Oye, y en diez días se
terminan nuestros contratos de trabajo.
¿Tienes pensado ir a Escocia para ver a tu
familia?
Rory:
Sí, pero ¡aún no he comprado billetes! ¡Es
que no he tenido tiempo! Me saldrán
carísimos.
María:
Bueno, vayamos paso a paso, primero
decidamos a dónde vamos a vivir, y
pongamos fecha. También deberíamos
tener en cuenta las fechas de inscripción en
la universidad. Tengo entendido que en
Argentina, por ejemplo, las clases empiezan
en marzo. Estamos a finales de agosto, así
que si viajamos a finales de septiembre,
tendremos tiempo suficiente para
mudarnos, buscar un sitio para vivir…
situarnos un poco, vaya.
Rory:
Sí, necesitaremos algo de tiempo para
encontrar nuestro lugar… ¿Qué te parece ir
a Argentina? Creo que sería más fácil
empezar de cero allí, Alejandro nos
ayudaría mucho, estoy seguro.

La verdad es que Argentina es un país muy
grande, podríamos ir a Buenos Aires a vivir
y de ahí hacer viajes… a la Patagonia, a las
Cataratas del Iguazú, a la Pampa, a la
Quebrada de Humahuaca… ay, ¡qué bien
suena Ro!
Rory:
Esta noche miramos la guía de viajes… por
cierto, en Argentina podríamos practicar
submarinismo también.
María:
Claro.
Rory:
Yo he visto en internet que en la UBA, la
Universidad de Buenos Aires, hay un
profesor muy bueno en mi campo. ¡Hoy
mismo le mandaré un e-mail para ver si
aceptaría llevar mi tesis doctoral!
María:
Venga, volvamos a Andratx. ¿Ya te has
terminado tu helado?
Rory:
Sí, pero me gustaría dar un paseo,
¡Valldemossa es increíble!
María:
Mark:
De acuerdo, ¡déjame que pida la cuenta!
Well if I like London, sí Londres me gusta, me
gusta mucho más Valldemossa.
Carmen: ¿De verdad? Nunca he estado así que no puedo
decir.

Carmen: ¿En qué parte de la isla está?
Mark:
En el centro, bueno, no en el centro pero en el
oeste pero no está en la costa.
Carmen: Vale. Ah, ¿es un pueblo interior?
Mark:
Interior, sí, en, pues casi en las montañas.
Carmen: Sí.
Mark:
Está al inicio de la Sierra de la Tramuntana.
Carmen: Vale.
Mark:
Pero está precioso.
Carmen: ¿Sí? Muy bien pues nada. Intentaré ir.

Y tómate un café con una vista magnífica y todo.
Carmen: Vale y ¿un helado igual?
Mark:
Un helado quizás, como María y Rory. Let’s
continue with this. We’ll go onto our English
version here just to help everyone to understand
exactly what’s happening. In this episode we're
joining Rory and María in the village of
Valldemossa. They've headed inland to one of
the most beautiful spots on the island for an ice
cream. After the exciting few days, the press
interest, and their normal day-to-day jobs, Rory
admits to being quite tired, and asks María how
she's bearing up. María agrees - she's worn out
because she's done two shifts, one after another
but, as she explains, fortunately her colleague

who has been off work is coming back today, so
María will be off the hook.
Hoy me ha mandado un mensaje de texto y me
ha dicho que ya se encuentra mejor.
Mark:
She’s feeling better and she can come back to
work. Rory tries to take control of things and
suggests that they need to sit down and have a
serious think about their future: in two weeks
their life together has changed completely and if
they're going to go and live somewhere
completely different they need to gear up for it ¡tienen que ponerse las pilas! María suggests
that she should make a list of all the countries
she'd like to visit and perhaps they could go to
the library to do some research. But it turns out
that Rory is a step ahead because he went to the
library yesterday and has borrowed some travel
guides. He suggests that they have a look at
them over dinner this evening.
María brings up the fact that within a few days
their summer contracts will have come to an end.
She asks Rory if he's planning to go home to
Scotland to see his family. He is indeed, but has
not yet booked flights because he's been so
busy. He realises that this means the flights will

be expensive. María suggests that they take
things step by step:

First of all they're going to decide their
destination, and then try to identify their
departure date. María also suggests that they
need to take on board the matriculation dates for
the university courses in the various possible
destinations. She's heard that in Argentina
courses begin in March. It's late August in the
story - regardless of when you're listening to this!
And this means that if they leave late September
they'll have plenty of time to travel, find a place
to live and establish themselves before Rory
would have to start studying.
Rory suggests that if they chose Argentina it
would be fairly easy to "start from scratch" there
with Alejandro's help. María thinks that Buenos
Aires would be the perfect base from which to
travel and to get to know Argentina - and further
afield. Rory agrees: tonight they'll look at the
travel guides, and he's pretty sure that they'll find
somewhere to indulge in his favourite

underwater pastimes too. And, as an extra bonus,
he's discovered that in the University of Buenos
Aires there's a professor who specialises in his
field, so he's suggesting that he should go ahead
and email him to find out if he would be willing
to accept Rory as a doctoral student:

María asks Rory if he's finished his ice-cream. She
asks for the bill and they head out for a walk
around Valldemossa before returning to Andratx.

Let’s go back and look at one of the sentences.
Actually, one of the sentences that you read in
Spanish there. Could we hear it again, Carmen,
please?
decidamos a dónde vamos a vivir, y pongamos
fecha.
Mark:
Ok, three different “let’s do something” and
using the subjunctive in each case for that “let’s”
imperative. Bueno, vayamos paso a paso, “let’s
go step by step”, “let’s take things step by step”.
Primero decidamos a dónde vamos a vivir, “let’s

decide” a dónde vamos a vivir “where we are
going to live” y pongamos fecha “and then”, well,
that’s poner fecha, “to decide on a date”, “to pick
a date”, “choose a date”. But pongamos, also a
“let’s do” something, using the first person plural
of the subjunctive so “let’s take things step by
step, let’s decide where we’re going to live and
let’s pick a date.” So that’s the “let’s” imperative.
“Let’s do something”. We simply go to the first
person plural of the subjunctive, the present
subjunctive, and we can use that as a “let’s do
something”. Vayamos, decidamos, pongamos.
Carmen, can you help us test our listeners?

On this particular expression.
Carmen: I’m going to give you a couple of sentences. Do
you want them in English or in Spanish?
Mark:
Let’s go with one of each. Can we do one in
English into Spanish and one Spanish into
English so let’s do the Spanish into English one
first.
Carmen: Ok. Llegamos esta noche así que hablemos de la
situación.
Mark:
Sounds a bit serious, doesn’t it? Let’s hear it one
more time.

Ok, we’ll give you ten seconds to think this one
through. One more time.

Mark:
Ok. Llegamos esta noche “we are arriving this
evening” or “tonight” así que hablemos de la
situación “so let’s talk about the situation then”
perhaps. So it does sound a little bit ominous.
There are serious discussions going to be taking
place there. Ok, let’s go for another one, this time
from English into Spanish.
Carmen: “We are going to China so let’s learn Chinese”.
Mark:
Ah ok. “We are going to China so let’s learn
Chinese”. We’ll give you ten seconds again to
think this one through. “We are going to China
so let’s learn Chinese”.
Ok. “We are going to China” - could we just say
vamos a China?
Carmen: Sí. Bien.
Mark:
Or could we say nos vamos a China?
Carmen: Nos vamos a China.
Mark:
“We’re heading off to China” así que “let’s learn
Chinese”. We’re going to use the present
subjunctive, the nosotros form: aprendamos.

So in this dialogue between Rory and María,
María begins:

Mark:
“What beautiful views from here. It has been a

cream”.

Mark:
So “yes, it’s really pretty but you know, I’m really
tired. How are you getting on?” ¿Cómo lo llevas
tú? He could say ¿cómo estás? but ¿cómo lo
llevas tú? - it’s this idea of “how are you carrying
it?” Carrying all the pressure and all the stress of
these past few days.

So “we are working too much.” Estamos

“shifts”, shifts at work. “Doing two shifts at work
one after the other” seguidos, literally “followed”,
es demasiado “it’s too much”. Pero creo que
mañana ya vendrá a trabajar mi compañero, “but
I think that tomorrow already will come to work
my colleague”. So “I think my colleague is back at
work tomorrow”. Hoy me ha mandado un
mensaje de texto “today he’s sent me a text
message” y me ha dicho que ya se encuentra
mejor “and he’s told me that he’s already feeling
better” so obviously her colleague has not been
very well and that’s why she’s had to do two
shifts.

ourselves down and think about our future”.

well, María suggests a translation here.

to get ready, we need to get organised.

Heritage sites. Lots of wonderful places.
Carmen: It must be beautiful, yeah.
Mark:
Beautiful places to visit in Argentina and it does
indeed sound amazing, ¡qué bien suena Ro! So
Ro, or Rory, goes on:

So Rory’s also been doing a little bit of research.
He’s seen that in the UBA, the University of
Buenos Aires, there is a professor who is very
well known or very good in his field, en mi
campo. You can use campo in the literal sense of
a “field” but also when you’re talking about a
field of study. En mi campo. Hoy mismo le
mandaré un e-mail so “this very day”, “today, I will
send him an email” para ver si aceptaría llevar mi
tesis doctoral, “to see if he would accept”, literally
“to carry”, “my doctoral thesis”. So “to be my

Ok so of course we can say “have you already
finished your ice cream?” but here ¿ya te has

yourself?” It’s almost “have you finished and
enjoyed your ice cream?” It gives that kind of
idea.

Rory wants to get the most out of his visit to
Valldemossa and he wants to go for a walk. Me

“It’s incredible”.
Mark:
Ok so they have been obviously sitting down
having an ice cream in a bar or a café and María
says déjame que pida la cuenta. “Let me ask for
the bill”. ¡Déjame que pida la cuenta! Why’s that
subjunctive there? Let’s think about it. She’s
telling Rory déjame “you let me”.
Carmen: That I do something.
Mark:
That I do something, exactly. So “you let me that I
ask for the bill”. There’s a change of subject so
“you let me ask for the bill”. We change the

“Let me do something”. Déjame que haga algo.
Déjame que termine los deberes. “Let me finish
my homework”. That kind of idea. Muy bien.
