Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. “Two people were in debt to a certain creditor; one owed five hundred days’ wages* and the other owed fifty. Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them will love him more?” Simon said in reply, “The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven.” He said to him, “You have judged rightly.” Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment. So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence, she has shown great love.* But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.” He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” The others at table said to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” But he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Scripture texts in this work are taken from the New American Bible, revised edition © 2010, 1991, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Washington, D.C. and are used by permission of the copyright owner. Michael Driscoll CC Ballroom B Evangelizing Through the Sacred Arts: Music as Mystagogy Pope Francis has inaugurated his papacy by calling all Christians to proclaim the Good News about Christ. In his exhortation Gaudium Evangelii he writes: “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew.” What better way to do this than with music which speaks deeply to people’s hearts and minds? 10:30 am Exhibits & Break CC Exhibit Hall B Workshop Session I 11:15 am - 12:30 pm A1 The Art of Celebrating Liturgy Fr. Michael Driscoll Pope Francis in his exhortation Gaudium Evangelii speaks about the way of beauty (via pulchritudinis). He writes: “Proclaiming Christ means showing that to believe in and to follow him is not only something right and true, but also something beautiful, capable of filling life with new splendour and profound joy, even in the midst of difficulties. Every expression of true beauty can thus be acknowledged as a path leading to an encounter with the Lord Jesus.” The American bishops spoke eloquently in the 2008 document Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship, when they declared, “Faith grows when it is well expressed in celebration. Good celebrations can foster and nourish faith. Poor celebrations may weaken it.” (par. 5) The bishops’ statement leads us to ask what constitutes “good celebrations.” What criteria are available by which one can judge whether a liturgical celebration is good or bad? Is it determined by the style of music or by the quality of preaching? Is good liturgy simply a matter of following rules? The way of beauty requires an artful sense. Michael S. Driscoll is a priest of the Helena Diocese and since 1994 has been on the faculty at the University of Notre Dame where he teaches sacramental theology and liturgy. Besides a theoretical appreciation of the liturgy, he is actively involved in pastoral practice, having worked as choir director of the Helena Cathedral and liturgical consultant around the United States. He is the founding director of the Notre Dame graduate program in Sacred Music (MSM) and the undergraduate minor in Liturgical Music Ministry. He has served as president of the North American Academy of Liturgy (2002) and the Catholic Academy of Liturgy (2013) and was elected on two occasions to the Council of the Societas Liturgica, an international ecumenical learned society. Among his publications are Alcuin et la pénitence à l'époque carolingienne, LQF 81 (Münster: Aschendorff Verlag, 1999), The Order of Mass: A Roman Missal Study Edition and Workbook, co-authored with J. Michael Joncas (Chicago: Liturgical Training Publications, 2011), and numerous articles in journals such as Worship, Ecclesia Orans and Traditio. 9 A2 RCIA for Beginners Fr. Paul Turner [RCIA Track] If your parish is just organizing or re-organizing its Christian initiation ministry, and you know you can’t do it all, where do you start? What’s really important to have in place? What’s the minimum you should do to address the real needs of people and to lay a strong foundation? Paul Turner is pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Kansas City, Missouri. A priest of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, he holds a doctorate in Sacred Theology from Sant’Anselmo in Rome. His publications include At the Supper of the Lamb (Chicago, Liturgy Training Publications, 2011); Glory in the Cross (Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2011); ML Bulletin Inserts (San Jose: Resource Publications, 2012); and Celebrating Initiation: A Guide for Priests (Chicago: World Library Publications, 2008). He is a regular contributor to Worship magazine’s “The Amen Corner”. He is a former president of the North American Academy of Liturgy, a member of Societas Liturgica and the Catholic Academy of Liturgy. He is a recipient of the Jubilate Deo Award (National Association of Pastoral Musicians) and the Frederick McManus Award (Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions). He serves as a facilitator for the International Commission on English in the Liturgy. He enjoys the Kansas City Symphony and the Kansas City Royals. A3 A Parish Building Track, Part I Greg Davis / Chad Abell [ACLS Track] This is the first of two ‘basic building block’ sessions aimed at pastors and building committee members (or potential members) who are at the beginning of a new or renovating building project. This session takes the parish from the first anticipation of wanting to build or develop a new Worship Space through the process of hiring consultants to furnishing the church and bringing the art into the space. Much of the process centers on Built of Living Stones and how the ideas can be implemented in an orderly and easy to understand manner. Greg has over 35 years in the architectural industry. He has provided liturgical design consulting / architectural design services for over 40 Catholic Churches or Church-related clients. His works with Church communities has included: Community Input Workshop Sessions, Process / Educational Sessions, Master Planning Workshops for new Worship Centers; design of Baptismal fonts; Liturgical Art coordination and Liturgical Furniture Design. He is a past President of the Association of Consultants for Liturgical Space (ACLS), served on the board of directors for the Texas Society of Architects, as well as the San Antonio Chapter of American Institute of Architects; served as president of the Austin/San Antonio Chapter of SMPS; on the board of directors for the San Antonio Chapter of LEGATUS; served on the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission in San Antonio 1997-2007. He has taught as an adjunct architectural professor at San Antonio College and the University of Texas at San Antonio. His studies include: Texas Tech University, Bachelor of Architecture, and Institute for Liturgical Consultants, Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, Program of Studies 1997-1998. Chad has been designing worship space facilities for over 10 years. Space design and the integration of art into the worship environment has been a major focus of his work. Chad has been involved in developing Architecture and Art workshops that allow interested parishioners a voice in the design and layout of their new worship space. Chad has served on several local boards in the Lafayette parish and is a founding member of the Lafayette LEGATUS chapter. He currently serves on the Advisory Council for the Catholic Service Center of Lafayette Parish and is also an active member of the Association of Consultants for Liturgical Space (ACLS). Chad has been a licensed architect since 1995, and is a member of the Bishop’s Committee on the Liturgy. A4 The Importance of Music in the Liturgy Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship Dr. Rick Lopez Dr. Lopez will discuss the importance of the music of the Liturgy and share how and why the role of sacred music is to serve the liturgy: “the participation of the People of God in the work of God.” In addition, we will discuss the task of "Selecting Music for the Liturgy" using the three judgments from the 2007 USCCB document "Sing to the Lord Music in Divine Worship". Dr. Lopez is the Associate Director of Music and Liturgy for the Office of Worship for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. He serves as the Artistic Director of the Archdiocesan Choir and as the Director of the Archdiocesan Hispanic Music Ministry Formation program. He is an associate board member of the Southwest Liturgical Conference serving as the Chair of the Hispanic Liturgical Ministry Development Committee. He also serves as Director of Music Ministry at St. Martha Catholic Church in Kingwood, Texas. He is a guest lecturer and frequent workshop presenter for the biennial Hispanic Pastoral Musicians Conference (HPMC), Southwest Liturgical Conference (SWLC) and the National Pastoral Musicians Conference (NPM). His articles appear in “Pastoral Music” (NPM) and “Liturgy Today.” He received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting with an emphasis in Sacred Music from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA. 10 A5 Gathering Rites: Crucial Intersection Between Liturgy and Life Paul Inwood Gathering Rites are the 'make or break" of our Eucharist's in the future. If we get them wrong, it is difficult to recover. If we get them right, that sets the scene for a successful celebration. Lots of food for thought, plenty of concrete musical examples that work in different parish situations. Paul Inwood is an internationally-known liturgist, composer, organist, choral director, workshop presenter and author, currently working as a freelance liturgy and music consultant. His music is to be found in hymnals across the entire English-speaking world, and his articles and posts are regularly seen in journals and on liturgy blogs and forums. In 2009 he was honored by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians as Pastoral Musician of the Year. In 2015 his music was selected for the official Vatican Hymn for the Holy Year of Mercy announced by Pope Francis. A6 What is Taizé Prayer? Opening our doors and hearts to pray with other Christian Traditions as we enter the week of prayer for Christian Unity David Anderson This session will introduce the Community of Taizé; its mission and outreach as well as the various types of Taizé song forms and chants that have become so popular among young people and Christians of many different traditions. Ideas on how to introduce and establish this simple ecumenical form of prayer in your community and well as implications for continued growth in our life with Christians of all traditions will also be discussed. David Anderson is Organist and Director of Music at Ascension Catholic Church in Oak Park, Illinois where he conducts four parish choirs of various sizes and age groups. Additionally, Mr. Anderson is Vice-President for Church Music and Senior Editor at GIA Publications. For over 23years David has prepared and coordinated monthly prayer services in the spirit of Taizé, which brings together hundreds of people from many Christian traditions at each gathering. He is a regular presenter at conferences and retreats throughout the country speaking in the areas of music, liturgy, the community of Taizé and other contemplative prayer outreaches. A7 The Eucharistic Prayers of the Mass: Hidden Treasures Before Our Eyes Barry Hudock The Roman Missal contains four primary Eucharistic prayers and seven other ones for use on particular occasions. This presentation will explore each of these important and beautiful prayers – how are they different? Where did they come from? Who wrote them and why? And most importantly, what do they say about our Catholic faith, our relationship with God, and what we’re doing at Mass? Barry Hudock is the author of several books, including The Eucharistic Prayer: A User’s Guide; Faith Meets World: The Gift and Challenge of Catholic Social Teaching; and most recently Struggle, Condemnation, Vindication: John Courtney Murray’s Journey toward Vatican II. He holds an STB from the Gregorian University in Rome and an STL in Sacramental Theology from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He works as publisher at Liturgical Press and lives with his wife and 7 children in central Minnesota. A8 Welcoming the Stranger, the Immigrant, the Newly - Arrived to our Parish Sr. Doris Turek, SSND This workshop will explore creative ways to make all who enter our parish church feel part of the family of faith gathered there. What more can we do to make our welcome so warm and hospitable that all our brothers and sisters will eagerly want to join us at liturgy? Sister Doris Mary Turek is a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND), Atlantic Midwest Province, Sister Doris Mary Turek was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1965 She received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and education from Notre Dame of Maryland University and a master’s in education, with distinction, from Arcadia University, in Pennsylvania. She is currently the Director of the Office of Worship of the Diocese of El Paso, Texas. 11 A9 Relaxing into the Mystery of God’s people being fed; Extending oneself to the sick and alienated. Spiritual Reflections for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Charles Matt This presentation will explore the integral connection between serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Mass and ministry to those who are unable to attend Mass, who often experience alienation. The “procedures” for serving at Mass are known, but how to serve in a way that is consistent with the graciousness of God and the mystery of the liturgical action can be more challenging. We will explore how being an instrument of the Lord’s special care for those homebound, in hospitals or prisons, by bringing them the Eucharist, completes the work of the minister. Charles Matt holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict, LA. He also earned a Master of Arts degree from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. Charles has taught philosophy and theology as an adjunct professor in seminary and university. He assists the Office of Worship for the Archdiocese of San Antonio with formation programs for liturgical ministers. He is involved in various liturgical ministries in his parish, St. Mark the Evangelist in San Antonio. A10 El Ministerio de la Hospitalidad - Abrir las puertas para que todos entren Dr. Dolores Martínez Escuchamos acontecimientos de las Sagradas Escrituras que arraigan este ministerio y le dan su debido sentido. These sessions are an integral part of the new focus area on sacred art and architecture being initiated at this Study Week in collaboration with the Association of Consultants for Liturgical Space (ACLS). Each session will be an opportunity hear a select group of artists, artisans, and architects speak about their artistic passion and the principles and process behind their work. Each presenter is limited to seven slides and seven minutes, so the event is fast paced and entertaining. Â\Çáàxtw Éy ux|Çz }âáà t v{âÜv{ à{tà ãxÄvÉÅxá tÇw Üxvx|äxá uç ~xxÑ|Çz à{x wÉÉÜá ÉÑxÇ? Michael Driscoll In celebrating the Eucharist we enter into solidarity and sharing with the poor. The Eucharist is the bond of fellowship and the source of communion. Therefore the Mass should prepare the Church for mission. To ignore this inner connection between Eucharist and life is to ignore the bond between the life and mission of the Church. This talk will take seriously the sending forth rites at the end of Mass and explore how these rites should be done to make the link apparent between the Eucharist and social justice. B2 A Parish Building Track, Part II Jim Hundt [ACLS Track] This is the second of two ‘basic building block’ sessions aimed at pastors and building committee members (or potential members) who are at the beginning of a new or renovating building project. This session focuses on critical architectural issues that affect liturgical practice. Issues for the built environment that will be addressed include: lighting, acoustics, special issues for renovation and how the art and architecture of the environment are connected. James Hundt, RA is a principal with the Schenectady, NY firm of Foresight Architects, a firm with a special focus on religious architecture (www.foresightarch.com). Over the years, he has designed a wide variety of buildings for nearly 100 religious organizations and other institutional clients throughout the eastern half of the country. Mr. Hundt graduated from the McGill University School of Architecture in Montreal in 1980. He has served as President of the Association of Consultants for Liturgical Space and as Vice Chair of the Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art & Architecture (IFRAA). His projects have been published in several periodicals, including the Environment & Art Letter and Faith & Form. B3 Theology of the Liturgy: “My Sacrifice and Yours” Fr. Paul Turner Participation at the mass includes inner prayerful presence as well as outer prayerful activity. What does the church expect of me when I go to mass? What can priests and people do to get more meaning out of the mass? He serves as a facilitator for the International Commission on English in the Liturgy. He enjoys the Kansas City Symphony and the Kansas City Royals. 13 B4 The Church’s Evangelizing Ministry Celebrating the Order of Christian Funerals Michael Prendergast Delve into the full and fruitful celebrations of the 'Order of Christian Funerals,' the ministry of consolation. Discover anew this important ministry for the parish and consider the role of the priest, deacon, pastoral musicians, bereavement ministers and the entire faith community. How are the full and fruitful celebrations of these rites of the Church a key part of her Evangelizing Ministry? This workshop will lay out a plan for the parish to implement in the month of November, the time when the Church rehearses for death. Michael R. Prendergast is a seasoned pastoral musician and liturgist, frequent speaker and clinician who has edited and authored numerous books and articles, including The Liturgical Ministry Series: Guide for Liturgy Committees (LTP), co-authored with Paul Turner and he was a contributor to the four volumes in The Liturgy Documents series (LTP). Michael is founder and executive director of Sacred Liturgy Ministries, a liturgical consulting firm; find out more at www.sacredliturgyministries.org. B5 Liturgy Evangelizes the Catechized Fr. Ken Hannon, OMI If the Church is sent to evangelize, she must begin by hearing the good news and taking it to heart anew. For the catechized, the liturgy itself unfolds as the on-going opportunity to be renewed in faith and discipleship. This workshop will examine evangelizing elements and opportunities in our liturgical celebrations which can support the on-going conversion of the community and its members. Fr. Ken Hannon is a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate. He is the Louis G. Vance Professor of Systematic Theology. He has been Professor of Pastoral and Liturgical Theology at Oblate School of Theology for more than thirty years. He is also a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy. He is a graduate of Oblate School of Theology and holds advanced degrees from the University of Notre Dame. B6 Open Wide the First Doorway: [RCIA Track] Celebrating the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens Dr. Jerry Galipeau The Period of the Precatechumenate culminates in the “first doorway,” which is the celebration of the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens. This workshop will examine this rite, what the rite presumes about the “content” of the precatechumenate, and the appropriate use of music, liturgical space, and ministers. Dr. Jerry Galipeau is Vice President and Chief Publishing Officer at World Library Publications, the music and liturgy division of J.S. Paluch Company, in Franklin Park, Illinois. E5 The Heart of the Matter: From Youth Choir to Liturgical Music Leaders Bridget Wenk Where will our future liturgical musicians come from? How are they to be trained? How do you get teens excited about liturgical music? How do you even get them to join a choir? These questions and others will be discussed as we look to the challenges and rewards of working with teens. E6 Bridging the Gap – Liturgical Catechesis for People with Special Needs Linda Khirallah Porter We worship a “disabled God.” The twisted, distorted, disfigured image of Jesus on the Cross shows how God allowed himself to become disabled and at the same time completely accessible to human beings in need of healing. We can see the disabled child or adult in God’s likeness. “All persons with disabilities have the capacity to its truth within the community of faith and offer valuable gifts. Their participation enriches every aspect of Church life. They are not just recipients of catechesis – they are its agents.” National Catechetical Directory, 49. This workshop will provide insights into special needs in your parish and how we can welcome these individuals, catechize them, and grow from those encounters. 24 Since 1994 Linda has served as Director of the Office of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Tyler. Linda earned a Bachelors of Arts in Education from University of Dallas and a Masters of Theology Studies from University of Dallas Institute for Religious and Pastoral Studies. She has published articles for the Tower Magazine from the University of Dallas, Catechetical Leader published by the National Conference Catechetical Leadership, and The Catechumenate Magazine published by Liturgy Training Publications. Linda’s experience with special needs stems from her professional study and most importantly her life experiences with her 20 year old grandson who has severe autism and a 10 year old grandson with sensory processing disorder. The Diocese of Tyler Faith Formation office has launched a program entitled Bridging the Gap: Faith Formation for Special Needs providing formation for clergy and laity. E8 The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night: Celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation Fr. Victor Reyes The Easter Vigil liturgy is the most beautiful liturgy in our tradition. It manifests how resurrection turns death into life, it also integrates the entire paschal mystery of the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Because the entire process of initiation bears a markedly paschal character - dying and rising, it is at the Easter Vigil that the elect are admitted into the people of God. As they are washed clean, perfumed and fed they experience their first sacramental sharing in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We will explore how elect and community are immersed into the saving death and resurrection of Christ at the celebration of the night of nights. The Reverend Victor Reyes is a priest of the Archdiocese of Atlanta and currently serves as pastor of Our Lady of La Salette Parish in Canton, Georgia. The reverend Reyes has extensive experience in catechetical and initiation ministries at the parish, diocesan, and national levels. Victor has served as instructor of liturgy and homiletics for ministry formation programs for both lay and clergy. He is a bilingual consultant in the areas of Christian Initiation, Liturgical Formation, Multicultural Ministries and Leadership Development. Thoughtful and prayerful planning of these essentials will enrich communal participation and reveal the wedding liturgy as a celebration of the whole community. Lena and William Gokelman, a husband and wife team, have served nationally and regionally as workshop clinicians in music and liturgy. Their sincere joy has been mentoring many volunteers -- especially those not directly involved in music ministry -- in acquiring a deeper understanding of the role of music in the liturgy. Lena is the Director of Music Ministries at The University of the Incarnate Word, a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, and Placement Coordinator for the Alamo Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
