Be joyful, all who were in mourning; exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast.” Isaiah 66:10-11 This is the opening antiphon for the Mass this Sunday and it marks a special day in the Church year. Today is called “Laetare Sunday”. “Laetare” is a Latin word that means “Rejoice”. As with the third Sunday of Advent, called “Gaudete Sunday”, the season of preparation is now more than half completed. Today we are closer to Easter Sunday than the beginning of Lent. Today the Church urges us to rejoice as we keep our eye on the prize of Easter. If the thought of Easter doesn’t bring you a smile, than perhaps seeing the priest in a rose colored vestment just might (BTW, it is not a pink vestment, it’s a rose-colored vestment). As with each Eucharistic Liturgy there is a life lesson to be learned. Aside from the beautiful readings from the day, if we take a step back and look at the day as a whole we’ll see cause for rejoicing. The season of Lent, as I mentioned before, is more than half complete and joy awaits us in three weeks. It is then that we will celebrate the resurrection of the Lord and will also witness the re-birth in the waters of baptism of many of our brothers and sisters who have been searching for Christ. We will also witness them and many more be Confirmed and make their First Holy Communion. Perhaps our lesson this week is this: there is no resurrection without the passion. When life is difficult or we find ourselves enduring hard times the Mass today reminds us that there is light at the end of the tunnel. God in his goodness and providence makes all things work to our benefit. Perhaps you find yourselves, at times, enduring a cross of one sort or another. We are reminded to bear that cross for the glory of God and to unite our sufferings with those of Jesus. It is then that the Lord will make some great good come from our cross. Every difficult season we endure in life will come to an end, and if we offer it to God, if we offer ourselves to him, happiness and peace will follow. The time of penance is coming to a close and the dawn from on high is almost ready to break upon us. Rejoice. Thanks a Million for all of your help! CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE: There have been some questions these last few weeks about the Annual Catholic Appeal that I’d like to address. For example, are we still having an Annual Appeal? The answer is yes. The Diocese has assessed us $45,000, as it has each year, to help with the formation of our seminarians, assist Catholic Charities, aid in the education of the members of the Diocese, and so on. Why aren’t we sending out the brochures? Not wanting to be a burden, we are uniting our Capital Campaign pledge drive with the Annual Catholic Appeal. We will pay the Diocese directly from the funds we take in from our Capital Campaign so you won’t have to make two pledges or two payments, one to us and one to the Diocese. Can I still participate in the ACA? Sure. The easiest way is to go to www.diocese-sdiego.org and you’ll find all the information needed to make a donation to the ACA. In the end, I truly hope you will consider making a pledge to our Capital Campaign not only to help revitalize our parish but the Diocese as well. Fr. Jim Collection Report for March 3, 2013 $19,963.50 May God bless you more for your sacrificial gift and ever generous support of St. Charles Parish.
