Welcome to our Parish
MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within
the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate
the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these
roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming
sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all
those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and,
by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.

SAINTS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES
Today is an exceptional event on our calendar: the 13th Sunday of Ordinary Time is eclipsed by a solemnity honoring two saints who
didn’t spend much time together in their earthly ministry, and who have distinct feasts so they probably don’t mind sharing this one.
Yet each suffered a similar fate in the same city, Rome, during the persecution of the Emperor Nero. Nero probably ordered the destruction of many of the residential neighborhoods in service to his building projects, and when the homeless began to look for someone to blame for the fires, Nero targeted the Christians. Soon, Peter was crucified, upside down, on the Vatican hill. Excavations
(called scavi) under the Vatican basilica have proven the authenticity of his burial place near the place of his death. Paul, a Roman
citizen, was later granted a swifter execution by sword, and is remembered at a vast basilica on the city’s outskirts.
Peter and Paul were just about polar opposites. Peter rough and ready, Paul poetic and polished. Peter carried a burden of regret for
his denials, Paul had his own issues with which he struggled. Peter leapt over barriers to go to the Gentiles, Paul strove with and
surrendered to the same call. True, they spent very little time together in this life, but the same Spirit filled their hearts and by their
witness changed the face of the earth.

Today (Sunday), the celebration of a saint’s day replaces the Sunday liturgy. Only a handful of these days, given the official rank of “solemnity,” are
considered so foundational and primal to the mission of the Church that
they can interrupt the Sunday sequence. And so it is with Peter and Paul
today. In a way, they each have personality traits with which we can
identify. They are both impetuous, sometimes acting or speaking thoughtlessly, contradicting the spiritual gifts given to them by God. At such times,
they might receive a nudge from God, much the same as many of us experience. On the positive side, these men were deeply rooted in their
faith in Christ, tireless and fearless in living out their call to spread the Good
News of his death and resurrection. Perhaps we might identify more with
one or the other, but the essential truth we celebrate today is this:
Through the Spirit, Christ built and continues to build the Church and make
the kingdom known through fragile, remarkable human beings, each
graced in a particular way for the work of the reign of God.

At Our Parish
FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION
of the
BLESSED SACRAMENT
RCIA
The period in RCIA called Mystagogy begins
after the Easter Vigil and ends on Pentecost. The Neophytes are to experience the
sacraments and to engage in fellowship. So,
Sunday June 1 and Pentecost Sunday, June
8 we planned some different experiences for
them.
Friday, July 4
after 8:00 Mass - 10:00 p.m.
Please sign up for an hour or more OR come in and pray when you
have a moment.
Jesus waits for us in the Blessed Sacrament. He waits for our Acts
of faith, adoration, love, thanksgiving, repentance, reparation and
charity that we can offer Him as we contemplate His Divine Majesty
in the Blessed Sacrament.
June 1, they attended Mass at Our
Lady Queen of Angels in Newport Beach,
where they experienced a different parish
church setting and large choir, spending
time afterward discussing their experience.
June 8, they were invited to Hennessey’s after the 7:30 a.m. mass
for breakfast and fellowship. This is now
traditional each year
as Jim and Maggie
Parish Office will be closed, Friday, July 4
and will reopen on Monday, July 7th
MEN’S FELLOWSHIP
Our next meeting is Saturday, June 7, following the 8:00
a.m. Mass. You are welcome to stop in or if you want more
information please call Joe Bevacqua at 714-747-3122
