ST TERESA PARISH
POURING MY HEART OUT TO
SAINT TERESA CHURCH
My Dear Saint Teresa Church,
I have been the pastor of this happy little church for more than
five years now, and every time I look back on these years, I
cannot help but feel a deep sense of gratitude in my heart. I
sometimes think of why God brought me here to Kankakee, and honestly,
some of my peers tell me that I should have been assigned to the big
churches in the northern part of the diocese. But I have been in those big
churches, and when I think of my experience of being here at Saint
Teresa, I feel like this is truly one of the most special gifts that God has
given me in my twelve years of priesthood so far. And through the many
years ahead, Saint Teresa will be an inspiration and a point of reference
for me, on how it is to be a true Catholic Church. What do I love about the
Spirit of Saint Teresa Church?
Saint Teresa Church is a church filled with the all-embracing love of God.
Our level of appreciation and understanding of the power of diversity is
outstanding, it really represents the very soul of Catholicism. It is a truly
welcoming church without any agenda but simply to love others with the
love of Jesus. It offers a deep sense of belongingness to one another.
Many times, I have images of parishioners being there for one another. I
think of how we have rallied together to reach out to our fellow parishioners that needed not only our prayers but also our material and moral support. Being there for one another is part of the spirit of our church, like
how it was with the first Christians, when they were one in heart and mind
and no one was in need because they all shared everything in common.
Our happy church has lived out the image of a true Christian community,
by receiving everyone as a part of its spiritual family.
Saint Teresa Church is a community for the poor. Even the big Catholic
Churches do not do the things that we do in our little church. How we
came up with the ideas of the food pantry and the clinic, the tutorial program and the family wellness programs that we have here, and the many
simple acts of charity that we do in every situation is simply by the initiative of our parishioners who have such passion for these causes. Before
you know it, everyone else is taking part in it, and then the Spirit of the
Lord makes these efforts bear fruit. As a community for the poor, we
become rich. As a community of the poor, we are able to access the very
heart of God whose compassion and love for the poor is boundless!
Saint Teresa is a happy church. Even in the midst of differences and
diversities, even though there are challenges along the way, we still manage to find ways to be the happy church that we are!
I want you to know, my dear church, that I consider it an absolute honor to
be your pastor. No matter what, I vow to carry the spirit of our church in
the many years ahead, and I ask you, collectively and individually, to
never lose this spirit in your souls. As we celebrate again the gift of our
little church to the bigger Church of Jesus this weekend, please whisper
some prayers, that in the years ahead, this Spirit may continue to explode
and be shared to many others around us. May we carry this beautiful
spirit wherever we lead, and share it to others. I ask that you continue to
be the teachers in our community in the ways of being a truly happy,
healthy and holy church. God bless Saint Teresa Church! Happy festival!
With utmost love and devotion.

DERRAMANDO MI CORAZON A LA IGLESIA DE
STA. TERESA
Mi Querida Iglesia de Santa. Teresa,
A veces
santa iglesia. Dios bendiga La Iglesia de Santa Teresa! Feliz Festival!
Con mayor amor y devoción.

Good News in our church...
Azzarelli Clinic:
The clinic has received several generous monetary and
equipment donations, along with a grant from
Climb4ACure, a diabetes education program. They also
have a newly Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner
join the clinic. They continue to serve hundreds of
patients weekly. Thank you to Riverside Hospital, and
all of the donors who gave to the clinic in honor of Dr.
Marc Fisher’s retirement.
Lisieux Pastoral Center:
Lisieux continues to have improvements made to the
interior of the building with more changes to come. The
interior atrium now has beautiful landscaping and a
gorgeous metal cross. The classrooms and hallway are
being painted and new flooring has been installed.
The building continues to be used for many meetings,
CCW and Knights of Columbus events, Lisieux Learning
Link, Youth Group and Parish functions, and is rented
out to people for celebrations and business functions.
Thank you to our Knights of Columbus Council for
providing much of the labor for the projects.
September Year of Mercy Activity:
A Song, A Story, and A Dance Presentation by Fr. Sunny
and Fr. Roy was a great success. The proceeds of the
collection to benefit Shanthi Nilaya Children’s Home in
India and a Gawad Kalinga Community in the

Thank you to everyone from St. Teresa, St. Rose, and St.

Last week I had a call from a family on the parish emergency line telling me that they felt they were beings
attacked by some demonic power. They were seeing and experiencing diabolic spirits working in the house,
shaking the closet, making unpleasant noises, the presence of a dead bird in the locked room and likewise
many other shocking things scaring them throughout the night. Many sleepless nights passed. But I did not
feel anything unusual because I have seen many such cases when I was in Argentina. It can happen due to
many reasons, especially psychological or spiritual. I explained to them all the possible causes of such experiences and blessed the house, later they began to feel better. This terrible experience forced them to
make some drastic changes in their life; I received a call again saying that they decided to attend Sunday
masses regularly and participate of other spiritual activities.
Jesus says in Mark 9:29, “This kind can only come out through prayer.” Prayer is the undefeatable weapon against Satan and its
power. The most powerful man in all times was the man of prayers. Take a look at the book of Daniel 6.8. Darius the king of Babylon ordered that for thirty days, whoever makes a petition to anyone, divine or human, except, King Darius shall be thrown into a
den of lions. But prophet Daniel continued his custom of going home to kneel in prayer and give thanks to his God in the upper
chamber three times a day, with the windows open toward Jerusalem. The soldiers complained to the king. So the king ordered
Daniel to be brought to the caste and thrown into the lions’ den. To Daniel he said, “Your God, whom you serve so constantly,
must save you.” But Daniel did not scare, he prayed all the more with all his strength. The following day the king came near to the
den to make sure that the hungry lions ate Daniel. But nothing happened to him and he said, “My God sent his angel and closed
the lions’ mouths so that they have not hurt me. For I have been found innocent before Him; neither have I done you any harm, O
king.”
This is the power of prayer. Those who believe in God, nothing worse will happen. Even the roaring lions become like lambs in
front of a praying man. Psalm 55:22 says “Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be
shaken.” Prayer is power, an undefeated weapon against all evils of the world.
At the moment of helplessness everyone will call upon God. The drama of Hamlet by Shakespeare opens with a scary and suspenseful mood. The scene begins with prince Hamlet’s dream of the dead soul of his father. At the moment he sees the dead soul
he cried out in a loud voice and called upon God saying, “the angels and ministers of grace defend me”. One more time the same
dead soul appeared to him and he prayed again by saying “save me and hover over me with your wings, you heavenly guards.”
The real and sincere prayer empowers each and everyone like an electric power and spreads all over the mind and body.
In the book of Judges we see the power of Samson how powerful he was, he tore the lion apart barehanded, as one tears a young
goat. Because, the spirit of the Lord was upon him. Such is the power of the man who spends time in prayer. No evil can take
control over him. So let us pray always and keep the evils away from us.
Have a Nice Week
Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Oct. 2, 2016
“We are called to show mercy because mercy has first
been shown to us.”
Pope Francis, Misericordiae valtus
Papa Francisco, Misericordiae vultus
Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
10/2/16
“Increase our faith.” This request of the apostles is
ours as well. We want more faith. I want more faith.
One would think Jesus would surely comply-here it is,
more faith. But, no, today he talks of mustard seed
faith. Less about thoughtful prayer or silent meditation, important
as they are. More about action, more about waiting tables, more
about attending to other’s needs first.
 How can my prayer and meditation prepare me to serve?
 Whom shall I wait on, whom shall I serve?
 In what little ways can I act?
Rev. Roy Jacob CMI
Spiritual Companionship is an ancient tradition. Its purpose is to nurture personal relationships with the Sacred in daily life through
dialogue and practices that open us to the
leading and healing power of the Holy spirit.
Spiritual Companionship does not tell you how to act or pray in
a particular way, nor is it psychological counseling or psychotherapy.
By listening attentively, spiritual companions are often able to
help you understand God’s actions in your life.
Call the office at 815-933-7683 if you are interested in meeting with a
spiritual companion.
