READ Together A Family Reading Project A Statewide Family Reading Project 2008-2009 Sponsored by: The Illinois Reading Council The Parents and Reading Committee The Illinois Council for Affective Reading Education (ICARE) For additional information, Contact the Illinois Reading Council 1210 Fort Jesse Rd., Suite B2 Normal, IL 61761 1-309-454-1341 1-888-454-1341 Purpose and Rationale for READ Together Project: The purpose of this project is to promote the daily habit of reading for Illinois students and their families. Literacy is critical to success in life. Its development is best nurtured both in school and at home. Research suggests that the amount of time students spend reading increases their reading performance. Improved reading performance leads to attitudinal changes and greater motivation to read, resulting in a positive spiraling effect. As learners come to understand the power and purposes of reading, they gain new insights into themselves and their world. This project provides an opportunity for students and their families to engage in reading on a regular basis. By doing so, families develop a reading habit that becomes a meaningful part of their daily lives. When families value and support literacy, students are not only more successful as readers, but they develop a lifelong love of reading as well. “Read Together” has far-reaching effects because students experiencing a literate way of life are more likely to pass this tradition on to future generations. Project Description: This project is designed to promote reading for Illinois students and their families. Families establish a family reading time of at least 20 minutes for a minimum of 25 days each month for four months (December through March). Family reading is defined as a time when all members of the family read. A variety of formats may be used, including independent reading, shared reading, and read-alouds. The project will begin on December 1, 2008, and continue through March 31, 2009. Parents will complete the Family Reading Record forms and return them monthly to teachers. Project materials will be available in both English and Spanish. If you would like Spanish materials, please contact the Illinois Reading Council to make your request (309-454-1341 or 1-888-454-1341). Materials will also be available for download at our website, www.illinoisreadingcouncil.org. Families returning all four of the forms will receive the “Read Together” certificate. Distribution of Project Materials: Teachers and/or school administrators will make copies of READ Together materials to distribute to students and their families. Teachers and/or school administrators will return School Tally Forms to the Chair of the Parents and Reading Committee upon completion of the project. Certificates will be mailed to schools so teachers and/or school administrators can distribute them to students and their families.
