Happy Mother’s Day to our Church!
I found the following points interesting to reflect upon: “Christians of the first centuries
said, ‘The world was created for the sake of the
Church. 'God created the world for the sake of
communion with His divine life, a communion
brought about by a ‘convocation’ known as the
Church” (Catechism of the Catholic Church,
760).“The Church is born primarily of Christ’s
total self-giving for our salvation. As Eve was
formed from the sleeping Adam’s side, so the
Church was born from the pierced heart of
Christ hanging dead on the cross” (ibid.766). It
is remarkable to note that the panel at the center of the Sistine Chapel ceiling is not the creation of Adam, but rather the birth of Eve.
“This church ... Is the home of all, not a small
chapel that can hold only a small group of
selected people. We must not reduce the bosom
of the universal church to a nest protecting our
mediocrity.” Pope Francis Sep 19, 2013 Interview with Jesuit publications. Link: http://
ncronline.org/node/61596 “A Church without
women is like the college of the Apostles without Mary. The role of women in the Church is
not simply that of maternity, being mothers,
but much greater: it is precisely to be the icon
of the Virgin, of Our Lady; what helps make
the Church grow! But think about it, Our Lady
is more important than the Apostles! She is
more important! The Church is feminine. She
is Church, she is bride, she is mother. But
women, in the Church, must not only… I don’t
know how to say this in Italian… the role of
women in the Church must not be limited to
being mothers, workers, a limited role… No! It
is something else!. . .I believe that we have not
yet come up with a profound theology of womanhood, in the Church. All we say is: they can
do this, they can do that, now they are altar
servers, now they do the readings, they are in
charge of Caritas (Catholic charities). But there
is more! We need to develop a profound theology of womanhood. "Pope Francis (7/28/13,

FOLLOWING THE GOOD SHEPHERD
The joyful tone of the past three Sundays of
Easter is a little darker today. All three readings remind us of suffering, death, and sin.
We, like Peter’s audience in the first reading,
can ask, “What are we to do?” And the answer will be the same: we must reform. Or, as
Peter says in his first Letter, we have strayed
like sheep and must return to the shepherd.
Jesus describes himself as a shepherd in today’s Gospel, and we know it was one of the
earliest images of Christ in the apostolic
church. Today’s passage continues the darker
theme of the first two readings. Danger lurks
and the sheep need protection. They might
follow a false leader; they might be stolen or
destroyed. Only in Jesus Christ will we be
safe. Only in him will we have eternal life.

robadas o destruidas. Sólo con Jesús estarán a
salvo. Sólo con Jesús lograrem
