What a great start to the 2013-2014 school year! Your children have been busy adjusting
to new teachers and curriculum. Team NASA has high expectations for your students.
With Teachers and Parents working together, students should have an awesome year!
Be on the look out for information regarding Parent Teacher Conferences in November. This
is an important time to check on the progress of your child.

Team Challenger ~ Welcome back! The 6th graders are off to a good start this year. We have
finally learned our locker combinations and where all of our classes are. We had our first field trips to
Red Oak Nature Center with the 8th graders and Brookfield Zoo. Fun was had by all. We have been
busy learning about plot diagrams, Greatest Common Factor and Least Common Multiple, characteristics
of living and nonliving things and geography. Students are currently reading Peter Pan in LA. Students
have taken their first Discovery Education Assessment on the computers. We will be practicing various
strategies in our classrooms to help increase our scores for our next testing session in December. Our
next field trip is planned for the Field Museum in Chicago on December 19th, please be on the lookout
for permission slips in November. Please remind your students to stay on top of their homework. They
have math homework pretty much every night and reading each night for 20 minutes. Please sign your
students reading logs each week. We look forward to working with you this year. Please let us know if
you have any questions.
Team Endeavor ~ Welcome back! We have had a very busy start to our school year. In Language Arts, the students have been learning about historical fiction and reading the novel Crispin. In
Math, we have been working on integers, properties, and solving equations. Please practice multiplication facts with your child. In Science, we have been learning about the nature of science and will begin
learning about space. In Social Studies, we learned about the first Americans and will be starting the
colonists soon. Students have also taken their first Discovery Education Assessment on the computers.
We will be practicing various strategies in our classrooms to help increase our scores for our next testing
session in December. We had a great time at the Planetarium on our field trip October 11th. Please
make sure to keep signing your child’s agenda and talking with them about what we’re doing in school!

Team Discovery ~ Welcome to 8th Grade! We are all very excited about this year. Your
son or daughter has begun their final journey at Cowherd Middle School and are getting
ready to start a new fantastic journey at East High. Our team focus and goal this year is to
make sure that your son or daughter is successfully prepared for the High School. If at any
time you would like to do a check in to see how your child is doing, please call and set up
an appointment. Our phone number is 630-299-5900. We would like to make sure that you
are involved in every step of your son or daughters 8th grade year. We have been very
busy since the start of school writing stories, learning about past events, familiarizing ourselves with different math strategies, and even becoming scientist. Ask you son or daughter to share with you all the great things that we have been doing. We will be taking our first
fieldtrip on Wednesday September 25 and Thursday, September 26, to Red Oak Nature
Center. It should be a very exciting day full of science. Team Discovery would like to
thank you in helping us make your child’s 8th grade year a successful one.

Comunida Pequeña de Aprendizaje
¡Qué gran comienzo del año académico 2013-2014! Sus hijos han estado ocupados ajustándose a sus nuevos maestros y currículo. El Equipo NASA tiene altas expectativas
para sus estudiantes. ¡Con maestros y padres trabajando juntos, los estudiantes deben
tener un año exitoso!
Esté pendiente de la información acerca de las Conferencias de Padres y Maestros en
Noviembre. Este es un momento importante para checar el progreso de su hijo/a.

Equipo Challenger ~ ¡Bienvenidos una vez más! Los estudiantes de sexto grado han dado
un buen comienzo del año. Finalmente hemos aprendido nuestras combinaciones de los casilleros y la
ubicación de nuestras materias. Tuvimos nuestro primer paseo de 8vo al “Red Oak Nature Center” y 6to
al Zoológico Brookfield. Hemos estado ocupados aprendiendo acerca de los diagramas del trama ,
resolviendo ecuaciones, características de cosas vivientes y no vivientes y geografía. Los estudiantes
están leyendo “Peter Pan” en LA. Los estudiantes han tomado su primer assessment de “Discovery
Education” usando las computadoras. Estaremos practicando varias estrategias en nuestro salón de
clases para ayudar el incremento de nuestras calificaciones para nuestra próxima sesión de pruebas
durante el mes de diciembre. Nuestro próximo paseo está pautado para el “Field Museum” en Chicago
el 19 de diciembre, favor de estar al pendiente para los permisos del paseo en noviembre. Por favor
recuérdele a sus estudiantes el estar al día con las tareas. Tienen tarea de matemáticas casi todas las

Equipo Discovery ~ ¡Bienvenidos a 8vo grado! Estamos ansiosos por este nuevo
año. Su hijo/a ha comenzado su jornada final en la Cowherd y se está preparando para
comenzar una nueva y fantásica aventura en la “East High”. El foco y los objetivos de
nuestro equipo durante este año es el de asegurarse que su hijo/a esté preparado para la
“High School”. Si en algún momento usted quisiera checar cómo va su su hijo/a, llame por

que usted está envuelto en cada paso del 8vo grado de su hijo/a. Hemos estado muy ocupados desde el comienzo de la escuela escribiendo historias, aprendiendo acerca de eventos pasados, familiarizándonos con diferente estrategias de matemáticas y hasta haciéndole de científicos. Pregúntele a su hijo/a que comparta con usted todas las maravillas que
hemos estado haciendo. Estaremos de paseo el miércoles 25 y jueves 26 de septiembre al
“Red Oak Nature Center”. Debe ser un día de ciencias muy divertido. El equipo Discovery
