. . .Carta Del Padre Terry
nuestra variedad, color, y diversidad.
Nuestros
Candidatos del programa RICA y los Catecúmenos
del 2008-2009 son:
Peter Bartels
Kailena Logan

. . .a Letter from Father Terry
To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration
We read the lengthy story of the Woman at the Well
this weekend from John’s Gospel. During Lent we
always have the option to read this story on the Third
Sunday, the Man Born Blind on the Fourth Sunday
and the Raising of Lazarus on the Fifth Sunday. The
Sixth Sunday is always Palm Sunday and the reading
of the Passion that day helps us to begin Holy Week.
The Woman at the Well or as it is sometimes referred to; The Samaritan Woman gives us a great example of the deep symbolism of the Gospel according to John. Jesus uses thirst and hunger as human
experiences that lead us to eternal life. The Samaritans and the Jews had age old conflicts that led to
them literally having nothing to do with each other.
Jesus of course cuts through these cultural differences and emphasizes that the gift of eternal life is
for all. Please be attentive to these stories. Stay with
them even though they are long. Open yourself up to
the rich symbolism and human drama.
Last week Cardinal George officially appointed our
own Fr. John Sanaghan as the Administrator here
at St. Matthias and Transfiguration because he also
appointed me as the third pastor of Holy Family Parish in Inverness, Illinois. Fr. John’s appointment
gives us all an opportunity to work with the Archdiocese and the transition to a new pastor. Both of the
above appointments begin on July 1st. When a pastor
does not finish his term as is the case with me here,
an Administrator is almost always appointed to help
with the transition to a new pastor. Often, but not
always, the Administrator becomes the new pastor.
If you recall I was the Administrator here for 10
months after Fr. Mike Alcantara did not finish his
term. Most importantly, the appointment of Fr. Sanaghan as Administrator gives us the time needed to
consider our needs and the Archdiocese time to assess candidates and needs of the parishes. As always, let us all pray that this process is guided by the
Holy Spirit and that the deepest wisdom leads us to
what is best for us.
It is not too early to prepare for our annual Global
Fest which will be on Saturday, May 16 this year.
Our School children have already begun working on
the various ethnic themes and other cultural studies
that help them to celebrate the various countries that
they will represent. Global Fest is an annual way
that we in our two-parish community express our
variety, color and diversity, Each Classroom takes
on a different country and transforms their room into
an expression of that country’s food, dance, song and
natural resources. If you are interested in sponsoring
a classroom for $250 or if you may be interested in
other forms of sponsorship or program ads please
contact Deb Bukovy or Sandria DeSapio at St. Matthias Transfiguration School 773-784-0999.
Global Fest also features a multi ethnic Mass and this
year we will display as many images of Mary from
as many different countries as we possibly can.
Please consider sharing your image or statue of Mary
for display near our current Mary Altar in St. Matthias Church.43
I am happy to report that our response to the Annual
Appeal so far is very strong. You still have time to
make a pledge by simply filling out one of the pledge
envelopes and placing it in the collection basket or
returning it to the rectory. Remember the Archdiocese is doubling our collected amount this year and
returning it to us to reduce our debt. Many thanks to
all of you who have pledged. Your stewardship is
inspiring.
Please keep the following adults in your prayers as
they mark their final preparation for full reception
into the Catholic Church. Our 2008-2009 RCIA
Candidates and Catechumens:

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
If your parish is reading from Year B of the Lectionary today, and not Year A, as is normally done
when there are elect present for the scrutinies and preparing for Easter baptism, you hear about Jesus driving
the money-changers from the temple. If you wished to get as close as possible to this site today, you would in
fact be at a Muslim shrine, the Dome of the Rock, built on the ruins of Herod’s temple. Archeologists believe
that this striking, gold-domed crown of a shrine is set precisely where the Holy of Holies once was. Jews believe that the rock is the exact spot where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac. It is not a mosque, as some
think, but a shrine, the oldest one in the Muslim world. For them, the rock is the place from which the Prophet
Mohammed ascended on a visit to heaven. The Crusaders mistook the shrine for the actual Temple of Solomon, and the infamous Knights Templar used it as their headquarters and model for their churches elsewhere.
The geometric perfection of the shrine is a mathematician’s dream. The inscriptions are not exactly hospitable
though, since they encourage Christians to “depart from error” and declare that “Jesus son of Mary was only a
messenger of God.” In ancient times, those who prayed here after walking around the rock were given a certificate entitling the bearer to admission to paradise. The ticket had to be buried with them.
GOD UPHOLDS ME
I take for my sureties: The power of God to guide me, the
might of God to uphold me, the wisdom of God to teach
me, the eye of God to watch over me, the ear of God to
hear me, the word of God to give me speech, the hand of
God to protect me, the way of God to go before me, the
shield of God to shelter me.
—St. Patrick
