What is Hopelessly Devoted?
Equal parts faithful and funny, Hopelessly Devoted is a
lovingly irreverent romp through the lives of two 21st
century Catholics. Bursting with the guilt..., er, love of
Christ, Hopelessly Devoted reconciles religion with the
functions of living--one sin, one virtue, one misguided
prayer at a time. Audiences throughout the nation have
been treated to this hilarious take on what it means to
live faithfully in a not-so-faithful world.
Here's what folks are saying: "The show is very much a
product of the Chicago improv scene: motley, rapid, lofi. But it slows down to do more than put its heart on its
sleeve with monologues from Vinnie and his co-creator
Natalie on their experiences growing up Catholic. It's an
awkward, profane apologia for Catholicism and faith
generally."

UNA CARTA DE PADRE JOHN
Hola a todos,
Esta aqui, la Navidad! Esperamos, nos preparamos y
ahora ....
Enviudado recientemente, Henry Longfellow Wodsworth
Y en la desesperación incliné mi cabeza;
"No hay paz en la tierra," le dije;
Padre John Sanaghan
A LETTER FROM FATHER JOHN SANAGHAN
Hi Everyone,
Till, ringing, singing on its way,
It’s here, Christmas! We waited, we prepared and now…. The world revolved from night to day,
What to say? It seems that just about everything has been A voice, a chime
A chant sublime
said so well, so many times before-in scripture, in poetry, in art, in music. Each of us have memories, thoughts Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
and feeling about Christmas and its meaning that are far
more eloquent than anything heard from a pulpit or read Then from each black accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
in a church bulletin. Just the sight of your family Nativity
And with the sound
scene or a gossamer angel atop a beautifully lit tree can
be powerfully inspiring and the smell of nutmeg cookies The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
hot from the oven is a truly spiritual experience.
In the midst of our much loved Christmas traditions and
beliefs other, unwanted, fragments of life sometimes intrude. That’s what happened to one of America’s best
known poets on Christmas Day, 1864. Recently widowed,
Henry Wodsworth Longfellow received word that his son,
Charles, a young lieutenant in the Union Army, had been
shot and severely wounded. As he sat alone at home in
Massachusetts, Longfellow wrote a poem called “I Heard
the Bells on Christmas Day.” Some years later a composer named John Calkin set the poem to music to be a
Christmas carol but he left out the middle stanzas that
referred directly to the Civil War. Here is the poem as
Longfellow wrote it.
"Christmas Bells
"I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Christmas Bells is not the most popular of Christmas
Carols but it is still sung and the words and melody still
capture an important piece of the story of Christ’s birthPeace.
Soon after New Years, my nephew Kevin, a young lieutenant in the Air Force, will join many, many other men
and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Trust me;
Kevin is the only one in the family who is looking forward to his new assignment in Bagdad.
On this Christmas Day, please remember in your
prayers all those of Kevin’s generation doing difficult
work in dangerous places. May their Christmas be as
blessed and merry as ours.
“With peace on earth, good will toward men!”
