The learner will able to recognize their name. What? Wheat berry seeds, bowl of water, shallow tray or baking pan, letter cookie cutters and potting soil. Wheat berry seeds can be found at any natural food store or you can use regular grass seeds. How? Soak berry seeds in water overnight. Next, fill the tray with potting soil (about an inch). Place the seeds in soil arranged in the shape of the learners name. Let the learner press the seeds into the soil with their fingertips. The cookie cutters can be used as a guide. Use a spray bottle to water the seeds. Place the tray in a sunny window. Watch the grass grow, do not over water. What Else? The learner can plant letters and words; this will help with letter recognition. The learner can also be introduced to how things grow. VPI Parent Corner: For Parents by Parents With spring in the air, it's an ideal time to do a little parenting spring cleaning to make sure you are on track to raise happy, confident and resilient kids! Here are a few parenting tips designed to put on a little psychological muscle in your kids: 1. Encourage your child’s effort more than their results: Descriptive praise is better than generalities. Focus your comments more on effort, improvement and contribution than on results as kids get older. Also try to make comments that help increase your child’s self-esteem by telling them “You are the best!”, “Awesome Job!” 2. Get kids to help without being paid: Teach kids what’s in it for us (the greater good/ the family) not me. 3. Use consequences to develop responsibility: Don’t rescue kids when they leave that home work assignment at home; when they are late for school or they are less than pleasant to another child. Allow consequences to teach your kids the important lessons of life. That is, you mess up sometimes and you can make up and/or move on but first you must learn from the experience. 4. Lastly, put the camera down and be in the moment: Make sure your mind is where your body is and be fully present when you are with your kids. Take mental pictures instead of photos sometimes and build family memories. Supply List: Gold fish (or any orange salty snack), piping bag (or ziplock bag), green ribbon Upcoming Parent Event! VPI loves having events for you and your child! Please come out to the first annual VPI Health and Wellness Fair.
