Page 2 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Many thanks to the Parish Council for hosting our parish Feast Day dinner last Sunday. And thanks to those who donated raffle prizes. We are blessed to have such a vibrant parish community! True Humility and Talents Some people think that humility is a matter of taking yourself to be small, unworthy, not up for much. But, in the Gospel parable, the servant who thinks he is too little to do much with his talent is dismissed as wicked and useless, and his talent is taken away from him. The Lord doesn’t praise him for his humility. So what is humility? It is the opposite of pride—but what is pride? Pride isn’t thinking that there is some excellence, some talent, in yourself, when there really is. Rather, pride is a failure to recognize that talent as given by the Lord. And so, of course, we are small and unworthy. What else would we be? Our talents are not a function of what we are and can do. Every excellence in us is a gift of the Lord’s. We can acknowledge the excellence that is truly in us without danger of pride provided we remember that that excellence comes from the Lord. November 16, 2014 In 2013, Pope Francis declared that a Year of Consecrated Life (YCL) be celebrated throughout the world. YCL will begin on the First Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2014. It will close on the World Day of Consecrated Life, February 2, 2016. We’ll bring you news of this special year as it unfolds. This d! ken Wee Not only that, but in the Gospel our Lord announces a funny distribution principle: to him who has, more will be given. So here is the idea. A person who does not refuse a gift of the Lord’s receives it and consequently has more. Then, because he has more, the Lord will offer him another gift. If he does not refuse that new gift, it will be given – and so he will have more. And then more will be given to him. And so on and on, till a person blazes in glory for the Lord. Unlike the useless servant in the parable, then, we can aim as high as we like, with true humility, provided we recognize as gift every excellence we have. Everything is gift, and everything is meant to be given back in service of love for the Lord. —Eleonore Stump, Professor of Philosophy, Saint Louis University Collection for National Needs Next Weekend Special envelopes are available in the pews for this collection which supports the Black and Indian Missions, the Catholic Home Missions, the Catholic Communication Campaign, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, and the Catholic University of America. Take one home today and bring it back next weekend. “You have been faithful in managing small amounts, so I will put you in charge of large amounts.” —Matthew 25:21 Booker T. Washington was a black American slave. At the age of sixteen, he walked almost 500 miles from his slave home to Hampton Institute in Virginia. When he got there, he was told that classes were filled. Undaunted, he took a job at the school doing menial jobs: sweeping floors and making beds. He did these so well that the faculty found room for him as a student. He worked his way up at the school, became a famed teacher, and eventually founded Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. What were some of the small jobs you did well before you were given larger jobs? Do not let what you can’t do interfere with what you can do. —Basketball coach John Wooden From: Vision, Praying the Scripture in a Contemporary Way Page 3 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Mass Intentions Saturday………….........November 15 5:00PM……...………....†Joe Martinez Sunday………….....…...November 16 8:30AM……...…....….…People of St. Didacus 10:00AM………….…….†Segunda Ordona 11:30AM………….……..Ruby Gomez, Spec. Kid’s Corner A wise man once said that the world is like a mirror. Frown at it and it will frown back at you. Smile at it and it will smile back, and you will have a happy life. When you look at the world today, will it be with a frown or a smile? Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Friday, November 21st According to tradition, Mary spent her life at the Temple from the time she was a little girl. Her parents, Joachim and Anne, presented their young daughter to the Temple for service and study, in thanksgiving for the great gift God had given them through her. Today’s memorial celebrates this occasion. It also calls us to think about ways we prepare and ready ourselves for Jesus Christ in our lives. Mary, conceived in grace, was prepared to carry the Son of God, but her time at the Temple helped form her mind and heart. Likewise, intentionally nurturing our relationship with God builds on the grace God offers each of us.
