MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS
A special thank you to the 4th, 5th and 6th grade students who
represented our school at Math Field Day this past weekend. We
appreciate your commitment to our school and know you gave your best
effort!
We would also like to congratulate our Toastmasters Speech
Competitors! We are very proud of all participants who demonstrated
hard work and dedication. Our winners and representatives at district
level are Ben Shapiro and Allison Cuadros. Congratulations!
The Saugus Union School District is eagerly anticipating its 4th
Annual Festival of the Arts event. The festival will include an honors
orchestra and chorus with student performers from each of our 15
elementary schools. The performance will be held at Grace Baptist Church
on May 30, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. There is no fee to participate. The festival
will also include visual arts selections and poetry readings. If your student
would like to participate, please talk to his/her teacher to obtain
permission forms and guidelines.
HEALTH WEEK
Our “Colorful Healthy Week” is this week! Please wear the designated
color of the day and bring a healthy snack to match it! Don’t forget to
dress comfortably and exercise your way through the week! The class with
the most participation will win a make-your-own-healthy snack classroom
party!

Thursday, 3/27: YELLOW – Crunch for Thursday
Friday, 3/28: PURPLE or BLUE - Lunge away to the weekend
SITE COUNCIL NEWS
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2014-15 Site Council. The
Site Council is a tremendous way to become involved in your child’s school.
If you are interested, please send a note with a brief statement about
yourself (to be included on the ballot) to Ms. Nolte.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS DAY
Environmental Awareness Day is coming! Rio Vista is holding its annual
ECO Day event on Friday, April 4. This special day affords our students
the opportunity to learn about our wonderful environment and gives us a
chance to beautify our campus. We can’t do this without your help! If you
are able to make a donation and/or help out during this special day,
please contact your child’s teacher. We need help with nature hikes,
campus clean up, presentations, planting, experiments/investigations and
art projects/crafts. Parents, please remember to dress your children in
sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing for this fun, kinetic day!
LIBRARY HOMEWORK HELP
If you are a parent struggling to help your child with their homework, we
have news for you! Virtual Homework Help is available from the comfort of
your own home through the Santa Clarita Public Library website. It is a
live program that utilizes experts who assist children with homework in
different subjects. All you need is internet access and your library card.
Simply log on to SantaClaritaLibrary.com and you will find links that help
with homework. Spanish language support is also available.
The Santa Clarita Public Library also offers free “Homework Helpers”
for students who prefer help from a tutor in person. They are available
from 3:30–5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, at the Canyon Country
branch. Assistance is offered on a first come, first serve basis and
students must be accompanied by an adult at all times to participate in

6TH GRADE
Orientation Nights for incoming junior high students are coming up! Here
are the dates for our two feeder schools:

AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT
Our school is offering a great opportunity for all of our students to
participate in after school enrichment classes. The classes include:

DID YOU KNOW?
That the new state testing is called the California Assessment of
Student Progress and Performance? The CAASPP system replaces the
Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. The primary
purpose of the CAASPP system is to assist teachers, administrators,
pupils and their parents by promoting high-quality teaching and learning
through the use of a variety of assessment approaches and item types.
All assessments are completed electronically. In preparation for the

MENSAJE DE LA DIRECTORA
FESTIVAL DE LAS ARTES
Un agradecimiento especial al los estudiantes de 4º, 5º y 6º grado que
representaron a nuestra escuela en el Día de las Matemáticas el fin de
semana pasado. ¡Apreciamos su compromiso con nuestra escuela y sabemos
que dieron su mejor esfuerzo!
¡También nos gustaría felicitar a nuestros participantes de los Discursos
Toastmasters! Estamos muy orgullosos de todos los participantes que han
demostrado trabajo arduo y dedicación. Nuestros ganadores y
representantes al nivel del distrito son Ben Shapiro y Allison Cuadros.
¡Felicidades!
El Distrito Escolar de Saugus esta ansiosamente esperando su 4º Evento
Anual Festival de la Artes. El festival incluirá una orquestra y coro de honor
con estudiantes de cada una de nuestras 15 primarias. La presentación será
en Grace Baptist Church el 30 de mayo del 2014 a las 5:30 p.m. No habrá
costo para participar. El festival también incluirá selecciones del arte visual y
lecturas poéticas. Si a su estudiante le gustaría participar, por favor
comuníquese con su maestra para obtener formularios de permiso y
directrices.

transcurso de la semana! ¡La clase con la mayor participación ganara una
fiesta en la clase para hacer su propia merienda saludable!

NOTICIAS DEL CONICILIO DE SITIO
Actualmente estamos aceptando nominaciones para el Concilio de Sitio del
año escolar 2014-2015. El Concilio de Sitio es una manera maravillosa de
involucrarse en la escuela de su hijo/a. Si usted esta intensado/a, por favor
envié una nota con un breve informe sobre usted mismo/a (para ser incluido en
la boleta de elección) a la Sra. Nolte.
DIA DE LA ECOLOGIA
¡Se aproxima el Día de la Ecología! Rio Vista tendrá su evento anual el
viernes, 4 de abril. Este día especial les otorga la oportunidad a nuestros
estudiantes de aprender acerca de nuestro medio ambiente y nos da la
oportunidad de embellecer nuestro plantel escolar. ¡No podemos lograrlo sin su
ayuda! Si usted puede hacer una donación y/o ayudar en este día especial, por
favor comuníquese con la maestra de su hijo/a. Necesitamos ayuda con
caminatas en la naturaleza, limpieza del plantel escolar, presentaciones,
jardinería, experimentos/investigaciones y proyectos de arte/manualidades.
¡Padres, por favor recuerde vestir a sus hijos con zapatos resistentes y ropa
adecuada para este día!
AYUDA CON LA TAREA EN LA BIBLIOTECA
¡Si usted esta batallando con querer ayudar a su hijo/a con la tarea,
tenemos noticias para usted! Ayuda Virtual con la Tarea esta disponible
desde la comodidad de su hogar por medio del sitio Web de la Biblioteca
Publica de Santa Clarita. Este es un programa en vivo que utiliza expertos que
asisten a los estudiantes con la tarea en diferentes materias. Todo lo que
necesita es acceso a la Internet y su tarjeta de la biblioteca. Simplemente
ingrese a SantaClaritaLibrary.com y encontrara enlaces que le ayudaran con
la tarea. La ayuda en español también esta disponible.
La Biblioteca Publica de Santa Clarita también ofrece “Ayudantes con la
Tarea” para estudiantes que prefieren la ayuda de un tutor en persona. Esto
esta disponible de 3:30–5:00 p.m., de lunes a jueves, en la biblioteca de
Canyon Country. La asistencia se ofrece en el orden de llegada y los
estudiantes deberán estar acompañados por un adulto en todo momento

¿SABIAN QUE?
¿Qué los nuevos exámenes estatales se conocen como California
Assessment of Student Progress and Performance? El sistema CAASPP
reemplaza el programa STAR del pasado. El propósito principal del sistema
CAASPP es de asistir a las maestras, administradores, estudiantes y sus
padres al promover la enseñanza de alta calidad y el aprendizaje por medio del
uso de una variedad de evaluaciones distintas. Todas las evaluaciones se
completan electrónicamente. En preparación para los exámenes, su hijo/a
