Al’s Desk Complacency - “To Hell with Them, I Got Mine!” They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph! The opposite of love is not hate, detestation, loathing or even hostility toward something or someone. No. The opposite of love is cold indifference – a deep-seated tendency to ignore or not give a damn about others. Whether they live or die is not our concern. It is that worldview that says, “I am ok. I got mine. I don’t care and so to hell with them.” This attitude is not only the opposite of love, it is the opposite of the gospel and everything Christ stands for. It is complacency at its worse. This smug selfishness or selfsatisfaction runs rampant in many societies. Many prophets battled with it in Israel. Listen to Prophet Amos decrying it, “Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall!... They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph!” (Amos 6:4-7). “The collapse of Joseph” was the ongoing disintegration, spiritual bankruptcy, moral decadence and the eminent foreign invasion of the Kingdoms of Judah and Israel. The complacent (the comfortable rich) was living in a fool’s paradise. They were eventually invaded and taken into exile. Therein lies the danger of complacency and indifference. That which we overlook grows into a monster that destroys us. Many people who are comfortable today turn a blind eye to all the social injustice around the nation: the neglect of inner-city families and children, the devastating impact of the revolving-door of the prison system that has rendered millions of children fatherless and communities decimated, the growing income and education disparity, job and housing discriminations, the increasing frustration and anger of minority groups. The list goes on. As Catholics, we can’t afford to be on the sidelines or pretend that these issues don’t exist around us. For unless we do something, the evil of our complacency will rise up against us in this life or in the next. The sin of the rich man in the gospel was not just his lack of generosity toward Lazarus, but his cold indifference (Lk 16:1931). Lazarus was invisible to him. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Mt 5:4). Mourning here means to be dissatisfied with the deplorable state of affairs in the world. So we can’t afford to be complacent, indifferent or adopt the philosophy of “I got mine.” Let us FOLLOW the example of our Lord. For “Though our Lord Jesus Christ was rich, he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.” 2 Cor 8:9. AN INVITATION TO SERVE OUR LORD Are you sitting there at Mass wondering to yourself, "How Can I Give Back To GOD A Little Something More Than My Sunday Donation?" Well, I have an answer to your prayers: Volunteer to become a Eucharistic Minister of the Cup or Bread; or a Lector (reader) AND, if you have children who've made their 1st Holy Communion, volunteer them to become an Altar Server. There is nothing better than "A Family On The Altar". Please contact Fred Baskin at 671-9911 or [email protected] to get your fears allayed and your questions answered. Can you hear Him..... God is calling you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BAPTISM PREPARATION CLASS MINISTRY We are looking for individuals or/and married couples that wish to share their time & talent in a rewarding manner. The Baptism Preparation Class ministry informs and helps parents and godparents prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism in the Catholic Church. Training will be provided. If you are a practicing Catholic and feel called to share your time and talent an hour or so a couple times a year please contact Deacon Phil Conforti at 805-382-6816. LIVING GOD’S WORD Jesus became poor so that we might be rich in the grace and wisdom of the Lord. We can pray and meditate on the responsorial psalm for this week: “Blessed is he who keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets captives free.” (Psalm 146:7) September 25, 2016 Page 3 Youth Ministry News How do we prove the existence of God? Is there a formula or algorithm to prove His existence? Is there an app for that? What constitutes something as proof? Is it physical? Spiritual? Emotional? Or is something that we just know? This is what our junior high teens will be discussing for the about the next month and a half in our series on the existence of God. We will be looking at God and all of his creation, not just on earth but all creation in existence. We will be looking into Gods plan for us and what he has done so far in our salvation history to show us his love for us and why we should love him back. So, how do you know that God exist? Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Every Friday Friday 9 a.m. — Saturday 8:30 a.m. The only truly efficacious prayer is the one that feels its own weakness. Even were we angels, could we think that our voices would have any virtue before the Infinite Majesty of God? But if our prayers pass through the Heart and lips of the hidden God of the Host, then they will be no longer the voices of only weak creatures disfigured by original sin ascending to God, but the voice of Jesus which cried to the Heavenly Father from the Cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (St Peter Julian Eymard) Can you spend one hour with Our Lord on Saturday at 4AM? Please call Lupe 676-1159. This week’s vocal Holy Hour is in Spanish @ 7p.m. Consider Biedermann Hall for Your Special Celebrations Did you know that Biedermann Hall is available to rent for your family celebrations? WORDS OF WISDOM… “ Charity is the cement which binds Communities to God and persons to one another.” ~St.
