Ps. 103:8 Dear Parishioners, In the middle of our Lenten journey, we come to celebrate a God who responds to our afflictions and gives us time to repent. Let us continue to embrace this season of Lent as a time to turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. May our prayer today be for God to nourish us and tend us during this season of repentance and renewal. Fr. Wilfredo Contreras READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY Third Sunday of Lent First Reading — God’s people enter the promised land, observe the Passover, and eat of the produce of the land (Joshua 5:9a, 10-12) or 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a. JUSTICE - In our day, we look around and see injustice, arrogance, and evil in the world, and even in our own country. But we are assured that God sees this as well, for in Psalm 103 we are told that “The Lord secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed” (103:6). Saint Paul warns, “Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). We don’t have to do it alone. In our efforts for peace and justice, God is our helper and our guide. Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34) or Psalm 23. Second Reading — We are now ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17-21) or Ephesians 5:8-14. Gospel — We must rejoice when our brother who was dead in sin repents and comes back to life (Luke 15:1-3, 11-32) or John 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38]. KINDNESS - Jesus warns us today that God’s justice will not be constrained forever. We are reminded that “if you do not repent, you will all perish” (Luke 13:3). We are given the grace of Lenten prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to bring us back to the right path. God is a loving and forgiving God. “[God] redeems your life from destruction, . . . crowns you with kindness and compassion. . . . Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger and abounding in kindness” (Psalm 103:4, 8). We can take comfort in these words, because even if we are the ones dishing out injustice and sorrow, God still shows us a way back to forgiveness. God gives us other people to help us on our way, people who show us kindness and compassion and help us to get on the right path. They are like the gardener who tells the owner of the orchard that he will nurture the tree, fertilize it, and perhaps it will bear fruit. These friends of God help us to realize our ways and nurture us back to the love of God. We are also invited to help others on their journey back to God in this season of Lent. We encourage each other and nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener of the Gospel. As a vibrant Catholic community of faith, we seek to become closer to God through worship, prayer, sacraments, spiritual forma on, fellowship and hospitality. Strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we go forth proclaiming the good news of sal‐ va on in Jesus Christ in order to make disciples and serve our brothers and sisters with our me, talents and treasure. Through our evangeliza on in word and deed, we strive to be the light of the world. St. Martha Catholic Church Miami Shores, FL February 28, 2016 Third Sunday of Lent Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger and abounding in kindness. Ps. 103:8 Jubilee Year of Mercy - Third Sunday of Lent Pope Francis wants “Twenty‐four Hours for the Lord,” around‐the‐clock availability of the sacra‐ ment of reconcilia on, implemented worldwide this Friday and Saturday. Celebrated with his o ‐ recommended “tenderness,” the sacrament is “a source of true interior peace,” says Francis, en‐ abling people “to touch the grandeur of God’s mercy with their own hands” (Misericordiae Vul‐ tus, 17). In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus warns us against judging others. Focus instead, Jesus says, on deepening—or restor‐ ing—our own rela onship with God, for during this Lenten spring me that Master Gardener can use even life’s ma‐ nure (the parable’s “fer lizer”) to coax fresh fruit from a tree that seems hopelessly barren—us! Parishes preparing catechumens may choose John’s Gospel, which likewise cau ons against judging. Imagine what the Samaritan wom‐ an’s lifelong neighbors thought of her mul ple rela onships. But by discovering Jesus, then sharing her good news— and Jesus—with those very neighbors, she whom they had probably judged quite sinful became instead their evange‐ list and “missionary of mercy.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Used with permission The 2016 Lenten Food Appeal In the words of Pope Francis, Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each community and every believer. Lent is a favorable time for letting Christ serve us through the word of God and the sacraments so that we become more like Christ, servants of God and others. At St. Martha’s and St. Rose parishes, Lent is a me when we can do something for the poorest, weakest and most insignificant members of our local community. Lent is a me for showing this concern for others by small yet concrete signs of our belonging to the one human family. Our combined parishes con nue to provide food assistance to some 450 families and homeless every month. Your ongoing support of this effort is a con nuing generosity and blessing, but in Lent especially, we ask for dona ons of non‐perishable food (or money), on Sunday, March 13th. Please Support Our Lifeteen Youth Ministry! The Lifeteeners are raising funds to go to the Steubenville Youth Conference in Orlando. The cost per teen is about $300. Brownie sale a er all Masses. PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR PARISH LEADERSHIP TEAM Mike Palma, Cathy Palma, Maria Benitez, Reinaldo Trujillo, Pedro Guerrero, Bernade e Johnson and Fr. Wilfredo Contreras Heavenly Father, You have gathered us together as a parish to be Your visible life in our world. Here we unite in worship, proclaim Your word, celebrate the Eucharist, and are sent forth to share Your love and make disciples. Lord, we take your Great Commission seriously and long for our parish to be so on-fire that we draw people to You. Help us in that endeavor, as we strive to work together—ordained, religious and laity. Please make our parish amazing, through Your power and Your grace. Amen. Journey to the Foot of the Cross: 10 Things to Remember For Lent Bishop David L. Ricken of Green Bay, Wisconsin, former chairman of the Committee on Obispo David L. Ricken de Green Bay, Wisconsin, ex presidente de la Comisión de Evangelización y Evangelization and Catechesis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Catequesis de la Conferencia Episcopal de Estados Unidos (USCCB). 1. Remember the formula. The Church does a good job capturing certain truths with easy-to-remember lists and formulas: 10 Commandments, 7 sacraments, 3 persons in the Trinity. For Lent, the Church gives us almost a slogan—Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving—as the three things we need to work on during the season. 1. 2. It’s a time of prayer. Lent is essentially an act of prayer spread out over 40 days. As we pray, we go on a journey, one that hopefully brings us closer to Christ and leaves us changed by the encounter with him. 2. 3. It’s a time to fast. With the fasts of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, meatless Fridays, and our personal disciplines interspersed, Lent is the only time many Catholics these days actually fast. And maybe that’s why it gets all the attention. “What are you giving up for Lent? Hotdogs? Beer? Jelly beans?” It’s almost a game for some of us, but fasting is actually a form of penance, which helps us turn away from sin and toward Christ. It’s a time to work on discipline. The 40 days of Lent are also a good, set time to work on personal discipline in general. Instead of giving something up, it can be doing something positive. “I’m going to exercise more. I’m going to pray more. I’m going to be nicer to my family, friends and coworkers.” 4. It’s about dying to yourself. The more serious side of Lenten discipline is that it’s about more than self-control – it’s about finding aspects of yourself that are less than Christ-like and letting them die. The suffering and death of Christ are foremost on our minds during Lent, and we join in these mysteries by suffering, dying with Christ and being resurrected in a purified form. Don’t do too much. It’s tempting to make Lent some ambitious period of personal reinvention, but it’s best to keep it simple and focused. There’s a reason the Church works on these mysteries year after year. We spend our entire lives growing closer to God. Don’t try to cram it all in one Lent. That’s a recipe for failure. 6. No hacer demasiado. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Lent reminds us of our weakness. Of course, even when we set simple goals for ourselves during Lent, we still have trouble keeping them. When we fast, we realize we’re all just one meal away from hunger. In both cases, Lent shows us our weakness. This can be painful, but recognizing how helpless we are makes us seek God’s help with renewed urgency and sincerity. Be patient with yourself. When we’re confronted with our own weakness during Lent, the temptation is to get angry and frustrated. “What a bad person I am!” But that’s the wrong lesson. God is calling us to be patient and to see ourselves as he does, with unconditional love. Reach out in charity. As we experience weakness and suffering during Lent, we should be renewed in our compassion for those who are hungry, suffering or otherwise in need. The third part of the Lenten formula is almsgiving. It’s about more than throwing a few extra dollars in the collection plate; it’s about reaching out to others and helping them without question as a way of sharing the experience of God’s unconditional love. 10. Learn to love like Christ. Giving of ourselves in the midst of our suffering and self-denial brings us closer to loving like Christ, who suffered and poured himself out unconditionally on cross for all of us. Lent is a journey through the desert to the foot of the cross on Good Friday, as we seek him out, ask his help, join in his suffering, and learn to love like him. Confession is essential in Lent. La Confesión es esencial en Cuaresma. 10.
