Reglas de Ayuno y Abstinencia en Cuaresma
Lenten Fast and Abstinence Rules
Se le pide a cada católico preservar el propósito y el
carácter penitencial de la Cuaresma que empezó el
Miércoles de Ceniza. Por lo tanto:
Each Catholic is asked to preserve the penitential purpose
and character of Lent, which begins Ash Wednesday.
Therefore:
 Los católicos que han cumplido 14 años están
obligados a abstenerse de comer carne el
Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los viernes de
Cuaresma.
 Los católicos que han cumplido los 18 años
además de abstenerse de comer carne,
deben ayunar, es decir, comer solo una
comida completa el Miércoles de Ceniza y el
Viernes Santo. Pueden comer pequeñas
cantidades de alimentos en otras comidas,
pero no deben consumirse alimentos en
otras ocasiones durante estos días. La
obligación del ayuno termina al cumplir 59
años de edad.
Estas prácticas están diseñadas para el crecimiento
espiritual. Los católicos no deben excusarse de estas
prácticas mínimas penitenciales ellos mismos.

Catholics who have celebrated their 14th
birthday are bound to abstain from meat on
Ash Wednesday and each Friday of Lent.

Catholics who have celebrated their 18th
birthday, in addition to abstaining from
meat, should fast, that is, eat only one full
meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Smaller quantities of food may be taken at
two other meals, but no food should be
consumed at other times during those two
days. The obligation of fasting ceases with
the celebration of one’s 59th birthday.
These practices are designed for spiritual growth.
Catholic are not to excuse themselves from these
prescribed minimal penitential practices.

God is indeed blessing
our Immaculate Heart
of Mary Cathedral’s
participation in Living
the Eucharist. At this
point, we have over 200
parishioners signed up
to participate in small groups, teen groups, family
activities, and the use of the devotional booklet From
Exodus to Easter: My Daily Journey Through Lent. Thank
you for your openness to being part of our Lenten
renewal experience. Please keep all the Living the
Eucharist activities in your prayers as the groups have
been meeting since first week of Lent.
Informational
pages regarding the Living the Eucharist will be handed
out after each Mass every weekend during Lent. The
pages will complement and supplement the content of
the small group participant booklets, the Family Activity
Booklets, and the Exodus to Easter: My Daily Journal
through Lent devotionals. The informational pages will
enable everyone to better understand the mystery of the
Eucharist, to celebrate this sacrament more fully, and to
live the Eucharist more intentionally throughout the

SAINT POLYCARP
(80 – 167)
Patron against earaches, dysentery
Feast Day – 23 February
St, Polycarp embraced Christianity
while very young, and became a
disciple of St. John the Evangelist
who made him Bishop of Smyrna,
before his exile to Patmos. He
governed that See for seventy years,
and among his disciples were St.
Irenaeus and the writer Papias. The
former has recorded that his master
knew St. John and others who had
seen Jesus.
From Eusebius, St. Irenaeus, and St. Jerome we learn that
St. Polycarp went to Rome to consult Pope Anicetus
regarding the date of the Easter celebration, as there was
a difference between the East and the West. It was
agreed that both might follow their own custom. In the
fourth general persecution, under the Emperors Lucius
Verus and Marcus Aurelius, the Saint was apprehended
and brought before the proconsul. Refusing to deny
Christ, he was condemned to be burned.
The author of his Acts, composed by the Church of
Smyrna, and abridged by Eusebius, which forms a very
authentic document of Christian antiquity, tells us that
they were witnesses of the fact that the flames did not
touch him, but formed an arch over his head. Thereupon,
when he was pierced with a sword; such a great amount
of blood issued from the wound that it extinguished the
fire. The death of the Saint occurred about the year 167.
His body was burned, but his bones are preserved in the
Church of San Ambrogio in Rome.

FORMACION PARA PROCLAMADORES DE LA
PALABRA (LECTORES)
Se invita a todos los miembros del
Ministerio de Lectores, a participar el
día sábado 27 de febrero, 2016, en el
Taller de Formación para los
Proclamadores de la Palabra de
Dios, en Español. (Lector es), en el
Salón 9 y 10 de la Catedral de las
Cruces.
El mismo se iniciará a las 10am y
concluirá a las 3pm.
(Descanso:
12pm a 1 pm). Además, se invita muy
cordialmente, a todas aquellas personas que deseen
formar parte de este Ministerio, a recibir la formación
señalada.
Por favor confirmar su asistencia llamado a la oficina de
su parroquia al día 23 de Febrero del presente año, con el
fin de tener disponible el material que se les entregará.
El taller será impartido por la Señora Mari Campos-Waite,
Presidente de la Comisión de Movimientos Apostólicos y
