FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
This Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally referred to as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Today we listen to
the words of the Lord as he refers to himself as the “good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep.”
It is sometimes so difficult for us to grasp the reality that anyone would lay down his or her own life for the
sake of someone else. This is especially true in a society that places high value on power and personal
advancement, often at the cost of “trampling” on other people in order to climb the ladder. Today’s
scriptures point to the one we are called to emulate—the one who lays down his life for his sheep. Today’s
scriptures challenge us to discover ways to bring life to those around us—to build up rather than to tear down.

To be good stewards we must be good
shepherds, willing to lay down our lives for
those committed to our care, not mere hired
hands who run off, “leaving the sheep to be
snatched and scattered by the wolf.”

OUR LADY OF GOOD COUNSEL
Devotion to the Mother of Good Counsel is associated
with the story of a miraculous icon. The sacred image is
found in a church in Genazzano, Italy, a beautiful town
thirty miles southeast of Rome. In 1467, all the residents
of Genazzano heard a beautiful melody coming from
heaven. As they looked up, they saw a white, shining
cloud that descended on the church of the Mother of
Good Counsel. The cloud gradually vanished, revealing a
beautiful painting of Our Lady tenderly holding her
Divine Son in her arms. Immediately, Mary began to cure
the sick and grant countless graces. In 1753, Pope
Benedict XIV established the Pious Union of Our Lady of
Good Counsel to promote devotion of Mary under this
title. April 26th is the Feast of Our Lady of Good
Counsel, who has been the Patroness of the National
Council of Catholic Women since 1943.
God of heavenly wisdom, you have given us
Mary, Mother of Jesus, to be our guide and
counselor. Grant that we may always seek her
motherly help in this life and so enjoy her
blessed presence in the life to come. Amen

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
