l dominio del gélido
invierno siberiano,
con temperaturas que
superan fácilmente los
–30 ºC, hace posible
que en la ciudad china
de Harbin, la capital de la
provincia de Heilongjiang, se
celebre cada año desde 1963 un
festival de esculturas de hielo
y nieve que está considerado,
junto con los de Sapporo
(Japón), Quebec (Canadá)
y Noruega, uno de los más
importantes del mundo.
Con enormes bloques de hielo
sacados del río Shongua, más de
15.000 artistas tallan durante
dos semanas toda una ciudad
con motosierras, picos, láseres
y cinceles, creando estructuras
gigantes de hasta 50 metros
de alto y que llegan a ocupar
una extensión similar a dos
campos de fútbol. 800.000
visitantes anuales, el 90 por
ciento chinos, dan buena cuenta
de que este festival es un hito
turístico de primera magnitud
que conviene visitar antes de
que cierre, el 25 de febrero,
y al anochecher, cuando las

luces de colores aumentan la

Madrileña de nacimiento y malagueña de
adopción, Pasión Vega –cuyo nombre real es
Ana María Alías Vega– confiesa que no puede
prescindir de lo menos necesario: «Siempre
facturo mi maleta y llevo, además, un equipaje
de mano con un vestido por si se me pierde el
otro, maquillaje por si acaso… ¡Con tanto ‘por si’
acabo llevando de todo!». Eso sí, siempre se le
olvida el cargador del móvil: «Como es lo último
que echas, siempre acabo dejándomelo… ¡Tengo
ya una buena colección!», dice la cantante. En las
giras lleva un flycase –«una especie de armario»,
explica–, que viaja con los instrumentos:
«Porque cuido mucho lo que me pongo en el
escenario, y abulta mucho». Ahora sigue dando
conciertos –el 22 de febrero en Sevilla– con su
último disco, Pasión por Cano.

A Madrilenian by birth but an adopted
daughter of Malaga, Pasión Vega –whose real
name is Ana María Alías Vega– admits that
she can’t do without her non-essentials: «I
always check in my suitcase and also bring
hand luggage with another dress in case
I lose the other one, and make up just in
case… with so many ‘just in cases’, I end up
taking everything!» All the same, she always
forgets her mobile phone charger: «as it’s the
last thing to pack, I always leave it behind…
I have quite a collection,» says the singer.
When on tour, she carries a flycase, «a kind
of wardrobe –she explains– that travels with
the instruments, because I take a lot of care
about what I wear on stage, and it takes
up space!» She’s back on the road now,
playing Seville on February 22, with her
latest album, Pasión por Cano.

Basta observar su fachada marítima para entender que
Palma es una ciudad con historia. La Lonja de Mercaderes, el Palacio de la Almudaina y la Catedral constituyen
un bello conjunto arquitectónico que, más allá de su extraordinario valor patrimonial, nos hablan de la consolidación de un poder –económico, político y religioso– que
ha modelado la capital balear a lo largo de los siglos.
¿Qué sería de Palma sin esos atributos históricos y culturales? ¿O sin otros como el Castillo de Bellver o el Faro
de Porto Pi? Ellos constituyen el principal valor añadido
a una ciudad proyectada por los romanos hace más de

Bolduque entre el 13 de febrero y el 8 de mayo. La muestra Jheronimus Bosch. Visiones del genio ha sido posible
tras una exhaustiva investigación sobre su obra que ha
durado seis años. La retrospectiva exhibirá 20 pinturas
y 19 dibujos de El Bosco y otras 70 obras pertenecientes al mismo periodo y que contextualizan su obra. / On
August 9 1516, in the Dutch city of Den Bosch, where
he had been born around 1450, Hieronymus Bosch was
buried. He was the painter who imagined the sins of humanity and the suffering of hell quite like no one else.
To mark the five hundredth anniversary of his death, his
native city has organized a series of events for 2016. The
main event is the exhibition of his work which will run
at Den Bosch’s Noordbrabants Museum from February
13 to May 8. The exhibition Hieronymus Bosch. Visions
of Genius was made possible after an exhaustive investigation of his work lasting six years. The retrospective
will exhibit 20 paintings and 19 drawings by Bosch,
and another 70 works from the same period that lend
context to his work.

Dicen que eres la actriz española del momento, ¿cómo lo llevas?
Es un piropo, pero espero no ser la actriz del momento sino de siempre,
durar muchos años y construir una carrera larga.
No quieres ser una moda.
No, y tampoco creo que la carrera que estoy llevando sea hacia eso.

Es un honor formar parte de ese grupo de grandes mujeres y grandes artistas. Estoy muy contenta de que nuestra Rocío, el personaje de Techo y
comida, haya llegado hasta ahí.
¿Qué posibilidades crees que tienes?
Lo veo difícil [risas].
¿Por qué?
No sé, son actrices muy grandes, muy consagradas, con papeles muy
importantes y yo soy más pequeñita [risas], llevo menos tiempo en esto.
Pero puede pasar cualquier cosa.
Hace dos años, ganaste el Goya a la mejor actriz revelación por Vivir es
fácil con los ojos cerrados. ¿Qué pálpito tenías entonces?
Tampoco creía que iba a ganarlo [risas], iba muy tranquila. Para mí ya era
un sueño estar ahí, haber hecho esa película y vivir ese momento que

actress for the moment but forever; to stick
around for many years and build a long career.
You don’t want to be a passing trend.
No, and I don’t think the work I’m doing is in
that direction.
You’re competing for the Goya for Best Actress
against Inma Cuesta, Penélope Cruz and Juliette Binoche.
It’s an honor to be part of that group of great
women and great artists. I’m very pleased that
our Rocío, the character from Techo y comida
(Shelter and Food), has got this far.
What are your chances?
I don’t think they’re great [laughs].
Why?
I don’t know, they’re huge actresses, really distinguished, with important roles and I’m only
little [laughs], and I haven’t been around as
long. But anything can happen.
Two years ago, you won the Goya for Best New

feel about that then?
I didn’t think I was going to win that either
[laughs], I was very calm. For me it was a dream
to be there, to have made that film and lived
this moment that I’d always watched from the
sofa at home.
It was a good start; that was your first film.
It was a tremendous recognition. You can only
be a New Actress once in your life and I was a
complete unknown. Nobody knew I existed in
the industry. But they saw me, they liked me
and I was up to the standard.

How did you get into acting?
From a young age I knew I’d do something artistic. Then I grew up and I got very shy, before I
was much more talkative. As a teenage I signed
up for theatre classes in high school and I realized I turned another person, the character,

When I’m working there’s no shame or embarrassment, and in real life I have plenty.
And what about the red carpet?
The first few times it was much worse because

Yes, of course, I was in high school and I impressed my sister’s friend, who was a director
and scriptwriter. She found out that they were
doing auditions in Madrid for a series and she
convinced me to give it a go. I hadn’t really
thought about it but I got to the final and I was
almost selected for the lead role in the series.

Canary Islands but, free of mass tourism developments,

n azul inmenso y un horizonte como
frontera. Y como llamada para desmentir a los sabios de la Antigüedad,
que creían que todo terminaba aquí,
que no había nada más allá de la isla
más occidental del archipiélago más remoto del mundo conocido. Grandes navegantes aceptaron el desafío y llevaron
hacia el Oeste el borde de los mapas, pero aquí quedó durante
siglos la línea de referencia, el meridiano cero de los cartógrafos. Luego llegaron los ingleses y se lo llevaron a Greenwich,
pero el fin del mundo no se movió de este sitio. Desde el faro
de Punta Orchilla, con un cráter dormido a la espalda, el mágico mar de las Calmas a un lado y el sol poniente al otro, no
cabe imaginar lugar más apartado que este promontorio de
color óxido en un extremo de El Hierro, la última de las islas
Canarias en asomar de las aguas del Atlántico.
Este doble factor, geográfico y geológico, explica la personalidad de la isla. Muy joven por comparación, buena parte

de su superficie sigue siendo dura y áspera como la lava y
su costa, abrupta como un volcán que todavía no se ha rendido al empuje del mar. Al noroeste se abre en un valle enorme que parece un cráter hundido y que recoge los alisios que
soplan cargados de nubes; la mitad de la isla al otro lado de
esta barrera de hasta 1.500 metros de altura es un desierto.
Y, entre ambos extremos, todo un catálogo de hábitats naturales concentrados en solo 268 kilómetros cuadrados.
Su difícil orografía y, sobre todo, su falta de grandes playas,
la salvaron de caer en esa primera embestida del turismo
de masas que sí afectó a otros litorales en los años 60 y 70.
Conservó intactos sus paisajes y, en buena medida, también
sus formas de vida tradicionales, lo que la ha convertido en
un destino ideal para ese otro turismo que busca mayor contacto con la tierra y la gente, con la naturaleza y el pasado,
con el sonido del viento y el olor del sabinar. Declarada por
la Unesco Reserva de la Biosfera en el año 2000, sumó 14
años después otro distintivo más, el de primer Geoparque
de España, otorgado por la misma organización en reconocimiento a la relación que los habitantes de la isla guardan
con el patrimonio geológico sobre el que viven.
Los herreños son herederos de una cultura especializada
durante milenios en el arte de sacar partido a lo poco que la
naturaleza les da. Y en adaptarse a un medio enormemente
variado. Por eso encontramos plantaciones de frutales en un
extremo, planicies ganaderas en el otro y pueblos de pes-

the personality of the island. Quite young by comparison, a great deal of its
surface remains hard and
arid, like lava, and its coast
is abrupt, like a volcano
that has not surrendered
to the push of the sea. To
the northeast, an enormous
valley emerges resembling
a sunken crater, which
bears the brunt of the trade
winds, laden with clouds,
that blow in off the ocean;
the half of the island that
lies behind this barrier, up
to 1,500 meters in height,
is just desert. And between
the two extremes lies a catalogue of natural habitats
concentrated in just 268
square kilometers.
Its difficult terrain and,
above all, the lack of large
beaches, saved it from the
first wave of mass tourism
in the 60s and 70s. It preserved its landscapes intact
and, in good measure, its
traditional ways of life too,
making it an ideal destination for another kind of
tourism that seeks greater contact with the land
and its people, with nature and the past, with the
sound of the wind and the
smell of the juniper trees.
Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2000, 14
years later it added another
distinction as Spain’s first
Geopark, awarded by the
same organization in recognition of the relationship the island’s inhabitants maintain with the
geological heritage upon
which they live.
These herreños are the inheritors of a culture specialized over millennia in
making the most of the little that nature has to give.

y musgos bajo la niebla, y pinares a los pies del mirador de
la Tanajara, y sabinas torturadas por el viento, y una improbable estampa de pastos verdísimos en la Dehesa, y acantilados de vértigo en el mirador de las Playas. Casi cada curva
del camino esconde una sorpresa y revela un paisaje nuevo.
Por eso esta isla hay que recorrerla de lado a lado y sin prisas,
en coche, a pie o en bicicleta, con los sentidos despiertos,
atento a los caprichos de una naturaleza que alberga 119 especies endémicas, abundantes poblaciones de aves y reptiles
tan únicos como el lagarto gigante.
Si los paisajes sobre la superficie del agua son sorprendentes, no lo son menos los que se ocultan bajo ella. La Reserva
marina de la Restinga alberga unos fondos de enorme valor. La agradable temperatura del agua, su carácter cristalino y el poco tráfico marítimo lo convierten en un lugar
ideal para el buceo. Prueba de ello es la celebración aquí del
Open Fotosub, uno de los certámenes de fotografía submarina más importantes del mundo. Una docena de escuelas
de buceo ofrecen inmersiones para todos los niveles y también la oportunidad de acercarse al fenómeno geológico que
protagonizó los telediarios a finales de 2011 y que, además
de imágenes espectaculares, nos regaló un cráter volcánico
nuevo a 88 metros de profundidad.

find fruit plantations on
one side, cattle farms on the
other and fishing villages
to the south and east. And
forests of laurel, ferns and
moss under the clouds, pine
groves at the foot of Mirador La Tanjara, juniper trees
tortured by the winds, an
unlikely patch of green pastures, called La Dehesa, and
vertiginous cliffs overlooking the beaches. Almost every curve on the road hides
some new landscape. This
is why you must cross the
island from one side to the
other, in no great hurry, by
car or by bicycle or on foot,
with the senses awake and
attentive to the whims of a
nature home to 119 endemic
species and numerous populations of unique birds and

this is that Open Fotosub,
one of the most important
underwater photography
contests in the world, is
held here. A dozen diving
schools offer immersion
courses for all levels and the
opportunity to get up close
with the geological phenomenon that hit the news
headline in late 2011, giving
us spectacular images and a
new 88 meter-deep volcanic crater.
Another way to enjoy the island is to see it from above.
You can do this from one of
the many miradors or viewing points like Bacos, Jinama and de la Peña, the work

Or you could go paraglid-

their island, we can mention El Pozo Las Calcosas,
an old fishing village that
has kept some typical stone
houses with thatched roofs.
There is also the fishing port
of La Restina, the archaeological sites at Tacorón and
the petroglyphs of El Julán.
There’s also the sacred Garoé tree, another legacy of
the island’s oldest inhabitants and the perfect symbol
of the culture of adaptation
to the environment so central to the herreños’ way of
life. Around this great lime
tree, the native bimbaches
built a system of pools to
store the water the tree captured from the air, a strategy used for many native
plants on the island, which
almost seems designed for
living in the clouds.
The modern equivalent of
the Garoé tree – or perhaps
of the spirit it inspired – is
the Gorona del Viento Hydro-Wind Plant. This facility combines wind energy
with the energy produced
by a pump and waterfall
system; it reached an historic milestone last August
9: it managed to meet the
total electrical demand of
the island for four hours. A
dream come true for sustainable development. On
average, 70 per cent of the
energy consumed on El
Hierro is renewable. With
these and other initiatives,
the herreños are managing
to minimize the negative
impact of modern life on
their precious island. It’s
something they can be very
proud of… and something
the rest of us must thank
them for.

con la producida por un sistema de bombeo y salto de agua,
marcó un hito histórico el pasado 9 de agosto: durante cuatro horas, consiguió cubrir totalmente la demanda eléctrica
de la isla. Un sueño de desarrollo sostenible hecho realidad.
De media, el 70 por ciento de la energía que se consume en
El Hierro ya es renovable. Con estas y otras iniciativas, los
herreños están consiguiendo minimizar el impacto negativo de la vida moderna sobre su preciosa isla. Es algo de lo
que pueden estar orgullosos… y que los demás tenemos que
agradecerles.

Cada cuatro años, de la pequeña Ermita de Nuestra Señora de

y Sociedad y Prensa.
A la edición de 2015 se presentaron más
de 1.300 instantáneas de 400 fotógrafos, pero solo 76 han llegado a la final:
cuatro ganadoras –una por categoría, cuyo autor se llevará un premio de
6.000 euros– y 72 accésits. Todas formarán parte del libro Foto Nikon 2015,

Air Europa operará su primer vuelo a
la capital colombiana el próximo 28
de junio. El vuelo lo realizará el segundo de los cinco aviones Boeing 787-8
Dreamliner, que se incorporarán también a lo largo del presente ejercicio a
la flota de largo radio y que, gracias a su
avanzada tecnología, permitirán reducir
en una hora la duración del vuelo Madrid-Bogotá, que despegará de la capital
española todos los días a las 15 horas.
Por su parte, será en diciembre cuando Air Europa inaugure su vuelo Madrid-Guayaquil, propiciando de esta
manera la conectividad entre Europa y
la ciudad ecuatoriana, conocida como
la ‘capital económica’ del país’.
En la actualidad, Air Europa conecta
sin escalas Madrid, desde su hub del
Aeropuerto Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas, con las ciudades suramericanas
de Caracas (Venezuela), Lima (Peú),
Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia), Salvador de Bahía y São Paulo (Brasil);
Montevideo (Uruguay), Asunción (Paraguay) y Buenos Aires (Argentina).
Y con la incorporación de Guayaquil
(Ecuador) y Bogotá (Colombia), a finales de 2016 serán diez los destinos
suramericanos a los que la compañía

Estas nuevas rutas se suman al acuerdo de código compartido que air Europa firmó a finales del pasado año con
Avianca Brasil por el que ambas compañías refrendaron su compromiso
de ampliar su oferta internacional. En
virtud de esta alianza, Air Europa ha
despegado ya su código en 64 vuelos
semanales domésticos entre São Paulo y Fortaleza; Puerto Alegre; Brasilia,
Salvador de Bahía y Río de Janeiro. /

Air Europa will operate its first flight
to the Colombian capital on 28 June.
The flight will be made by the second
of the five Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner
aircraft that will be added to the longhaul fleet in this period and which,
thanks to their advanced technology,
reduce one-hour of flight time between Madrid and Bogota. The new
route will take off from the Spanish
capital every day at 3 pm. Air Europa
will inaugurate the Madrid-Guayaquil
flight in December, thereby providing

Air Europa presently offers non-stop

con desfibriladores externos semiautomáticos (DESA),
convirtiéndose así en la primera aerolínea española
‘cardioprotegida’. Estos DESA, los más modernos del
mercado, complementan el botiquín médico de emergencias
ya existente y permiten atender, con mayores garantías de
éxito, cualquier posible parada cardiaca durante el vuelo.
Para eso, todos los tripulantes de cabina de pasajeros (TCP)
han recibido una completa formación para su uso, realizada
bajo la dirección del Servicio Médico de la compañía en
colaboración con Previs Gestión de Riesgos, que se suma a
sus conocimientos sobre soporte vital básico. Los DESA que
se pueden encontrar a bordo de los aviones de Air Europa
responden a un diseño sencillo, fácil de usar y con unas
instrucciones claras de voz para poder atender a una persona

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) implemented a security programme
denominated “Secure Flight” which is compulsory under the authority of 49 U.S.C.

«I’m passionate about
creating with my hands
and I’ve been very creative
since I was a kid. In part, I
have my father to thank:
he’s an industrial engineer
and he worked as a
toolmaker and aeronautical
technician and I used to
help him in the workshop
he had at home. I’ve come
up with an invention called
HOLD4U, a multi-format
support device with a
patented anchor system
and a flexible arm to hold
tablets, lights, trays and
mirrors. Now I want to
adapt it for wheelchairs.
In 2015 it was selected
by the Spanish Inventors’
Club as one of the 15 best
inventions of the year.
I’ve taken it to several
international trade fairs
and I’ve managed to get
an investor on board and
we’re looking at ways to
set up a company. I’ve
