Page 2 The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 30, 2013 Peter’s Pence Collection this Weekend Pope Benedict XVI said, “I come...as a pilgrim of charity, to confirm my brothers and sisters in the faith and strengthen them in the hope which is born of the presence of God’s love in our lives.” The Peter’s Pence collection gives us a chance to be pilgrims of charity for those in need, led by the good example of the Holy Father. The pope uses Collection proceeds to provide emergency assistance and aid to the most disadvantaged around the world. Please be generous in the Collection and be a pilgrim of charity throughout the world. There are special envelopes for this collection in the pews. Please return them in the collection basket or to the Parish Office. The Parish Office will be closed on Thursday, July 4th in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Someone said to Jesus, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus shows us how to harmonize our inner Elijah and Elisha along the way to Jerusalem. He leaves his hometown but takes along his mother and a few friends. He is resolute in his mission but often steps aside for rest and prayer. He doesn’t own much but never turns down a good meal or an evening of hospitality. He wields the authority of a wonderworker but suffers and dies like a man. Here’s the catch: Jesus expects no less from his disciples. If we want to follow him, we can’t look back. We won’t be asked to give up “everything” and “everybody” but there will surely be sacrifices along the way. And “the way” implies a journey: this is no static mission but a dynamic vocation that requires growth, change and movement. Ready to get started? Today’s the day. —exploringthesundayreadings.com In gratitude for all the gifts God has showered upon our country attend our July 4th Mass 9:00am Please note: we will not have a 7:30am Mass that day. Give me love of yourself along with your grace, for that is enough for me. —St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) Page 3 The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mass Intentions Saturday…………........June 29 5:00PM………………....†Cora Darnell Sunday………….....…..June 30 8:30AM………………....†Tom Driscoll 10:00AM………..………†Berta Long 11:30AM………………..People of St. Didacus Monday………………...July 1 7:30AM……...………….†Jorge Moser Tuesday………..…..….July 2 6:00PM……………....…†Antonio Rendon Wednesday……......….July 3 8:30AM………..………..†James Hingeley Thursday………...…….July 4 9:00AM……….………...†Albert Nottoli Friday…………...……..July 5 7:30AM………………....Rosena Foley, Special Int. MEETINGS FOR VBS FOR LEADERS & HELPERS Monday, July 15th at 10 AM—Parish Hall Page 5 The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Fortnight of Freedom June 21-July 4 The U.S. Bishops have again this year called on American Catholics to pray, from June 21 to July 4, for the protection of religious freedom. This two-week period of prayer and action calls us to address many current challenges to religious liberty, including the August 1, 2013 deadline for religious organizations to comply with the HHS mandate, Supreme Court rulings that could attempt to redefine marriage, and religious liberty concerns in areas such as immigration and humanitarian services. The Bishops hope that Catholics in this country will take the time to understand these public issues in the light of their faith and exercise their obligations as citizens in shaping public policy. If Catholics and people of other religions remain steadfast in their faith and lead lives filled with love of God and others, our society will not become publicly godless. Our Catholic faith and our American freedom will be at home with each other. May we pray and work to protect religious liberty in our country. Kid’s Corner Did you ever realize that the Bible is a family album? When you look at your family pictures, your folks can tell you what it was like “way back when” you were a baby—and maybe even when your parents and grandparents were babies! Well, “way back when” Jesus was born, there were no cameras, but the Bible has stories that are like “word pictures” that tell you what it was like when the family of the Church began. Aren’t you glad you belong to TWO families—your own and God’s? —365 Fun Facts for Catholic Kids June 30, 2013 “Today is a tragic day for marriage and our nation," Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said in a joint statement on Wednesday, June 26th, representing U.S. bishops. "The Supreme Court has dealt a profound injustice to the American people by striking down in part the federal Defense of Marriage Act. The Court got it wrong." The federal government ought to respect the truth that marriage is the union of one man and one woman, even where states fail to do so. The preservation of liberty and justice requires that all laws, federal and state, respect the truth, including the truth about marriage. It is also unfortunate that the Court did not take the opportunity to uphold California’s Proposition 8 but instead decided not to rule on the matter. The common good of all, especially our children, depends upon a society that strives to uphold the truth of marriage. Now is the time to redouble our efforts in witness to this truth. These decisions are part of a public debate of great consequence. The future of marriage and the well-being of our society hang in the balance. Marriage is the only institution that brings together a man and a woman for life, providing any child who comes from their union with the secure foundation of a mother and a father. Our culture has taken for granted for far too long what human nature, experience, common sense, and God’s wise design all confirm: the difference between a man and a woman matters, and the difference between a mom and a dad matters. While the culture has failed in many ways to be marriage-strengthening, this is no reason to give up. Now is the time to strengthen marriage, not redefine it. What is RCIA? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process, established for the universal Church, for individuals to become Catholics and receive the sacraments of initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. If you or someone you know would like to learn more about this process, please join us for any of these informational meetings at 7pm in the Parish Hall: Thursday, August 1st Thursday, August 15th Thursday, August 29th Pagina 6 Decimo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 30 de junio 2013 Te seguiré adonde vayas El tema fundamental de este domingo es la vocación.
