Mission Statement
Saint Peter’s Church is a Catholic community devoted to deep and abiding
friendship with Jesus Christ. We strive to build upon the legacy of faith entrusted
to us by the Catholic pioneers who courageously established Saint Peter’s – an
ethnically and economically diverse community unified through the power of
the Holy Spirit in the truth and love of Jesus Christ. Mindful of this legacy as well
as our need for ongoing conversion amidst new challenges, today, in our fourth
century, we seek friendship with Jesus through our commitments to:
• Understand and proclaim His saving truth revealed in the
Bible in union with the official teaching authority of the
Catholic Church.
• Worship joyfully His living presence in the sacraments,
especially the Eucharist.
• Recognize His face in those we are privileged to serve and
protect, particularly the poor and vulnerable.
• Welcome Him in each other through our fellowship and
unity amidst the rich diversity of our parish community.
• Encounter Him and the beauty of His creation by preserving
our parish as a peaceful and prayerful sanctuary.
• Hear His personal call to holiness and help families embrace it
in all vocations, especially to priesthood or consecrated life.
• Imitate His generous self-giving as a way of life that expresses
our gratitude to Him and our love for God and neighbor.

There are some things in life that you just cannot
prepare for. Marriage is one. Parenthood is another.
Once a couple signs the dotted line and when they
bring a crying infant home from the hospital, there’s
no turning back.
Throughout our lives we are told that having a child
will change your life forever, for the better, of
course. We’re told that we will never remember
what our lives were like before that little bundle of
joy occupied our homes. The culture often repeats
the mantra, “Children are a blessing.” We see this on
baby shower cakes, greeting cards, onesies, etc. We
automatically think it’s because babies are pudgy,
cute, innocent little versions of ourselves.
This is all true, of course! I remember the day Zack
was born. Andy and I just gazed at him and marveled
at the little person we had made together. Children
definitely are blessings, but not always in the ways
we expect. Children are also blessings because they
teach us a lesson that many young adults haven’t
learned yet: redemptive suffering. In a nutshell,
redemptive suffering is when one offers up daily
sufferings for atonement for one’s own sins and the
sins of others. And there is no shortage of sufferings
when it comes to parenting! Children teach us the
hard lessons that life has not gotten around to
teaching us just yet.
Oh how I remember the first few days of
motherhood. Crying with the baby at 3 o’clock in the
morning, wondering what was wrong with him. Did
he have a tummy ache? Was he too hot or too cold?
Did he hate me already? Turned out the poor little
kid was just starving. Then came teething, then came
the tantrums, then came Baby #2, #3, and now #4 is
due next month.
It may seem like we are gluttons for punishment for
having four children, but that couldn’t be further
from the truth. The past 6 years of parenting has
brought us inexplicable joy. The love that our
children have mirrored back to us has been
incredibly gratifying. But the joy also comes from the
hard lessons they unknowingly have taught us.
I firmly believe God gave us children to teach us
humility and literally bring us to our knees in sheer
frustration. One very hard lesson that Seth, our
second child, taught me is learning patience and
controlling my temper. It took me a while to catch
on to Seth’s sensitivity to tone. Once we raise our
voice to him, he dissolves into tears and shuts down.
Both of us have had to learn to control our reactions
and tone when correcting him. Sebastian, our 20month old, has taught us humility and that the walk
of shame to the crying room isn’t so bad. (It really
does help when people give us an understanding,
“I’ve been there” smile as we walk past.)
It’s true that we don’t remember what our lives were
like before children. As of right now, I have no
recollection of what it was like to sleep in. But, I can’t
imagine my life being any different. Sleeping in is a
luxury I wouldn’t trade for when my 4-year old
snuggles with me at 6:30 in the morning or when my
toddler has a night mare and needs Mommy
snuggles to go back to sleep. It may seem like an
annoyance, but it is a blessing to be their mother.
On this Mother’s Day, let us all be reminded of the
not-so-convenient lessons our children have
unknowingly taught us.

SAINTS NEREUS & ACHILLEUS,
MARTYRS (Early Second Century)
Saints Nereus and Achilleus were
Roman martyrs. Their ancient and
well-established cult centers on their
relics located in the cemetery of
Domitilla. They were Praetorian
soldiers who left their military life
after
their
conversion
to
Christianity. According to their
legendary
“Acts”
they
were
beheaded during the reign of the
Roman emperor Trajan (98 – 117)
for refusing to sacrifice to idols.
Their lives and stories are shrouded
in legend but the most ancient and
reliable historical source is an
inscription written in their honor
by Pope St. Damasus I during the
fourth century.

Day of Reflection/Rite of Enrollment for Confirmation Group Year 1 (CGY1)
As the actual Confirmation date for our 2014 candidates has been changed to May 31, our program for the 2015
candidates is changed to May 17. We will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the school and end with 5:00 Mass and the Rite of
Enrollment. Please contact the Office for Christian Formation to RSVP. We are asking that at least one parent
participate with the candidate. This is for St. Peter's School 7th grade students (whose families are registered
members of St. Peter's Parish) and those in the CGY1 parish program.
Congratulations!
We are very happy to offer congratulations to two outstanding individuals who serve the youth of our parish.
Each year, the Archdiocese Office of Youth Ministry/Catholic Youth Organization recognizes people who work
to build ministry with youth, bringing them to a deeper friendship with Jesus Christ, by their example of living
as a disciple. The awards were given on Wednesday, May 7 at a Mass and ceremony held at the Franciscan
Monastery in Washington DC with Bishop Knestout presiding.
Marianna Hamilton, our Coordinator of Christian Formation was chosen to receive the
Outstanding Adult Leadership Award. She was selected from dozens of nominees representing
the hundreds of adults who work in parish youth ministry in the Archdiocese. Only one award is
granted annually in this category.
Marsha Forson, a high school senior and youth representative on our parish pastoral council
selected to receive the St.Timothy Award. This award recognizes youth commitment
achievement in parish youth ministry. Those selected (9 total) have demonstrated by word
example, their desire to be mature disciples of Christ, sharing the Good News with their peers
the community.

Catholic Relief Services Collection
Families and individuals both at home and around the world are struggling.
The annual Catholic Relief Services Collection reminds us that, through our
generosity, we can help ease those burdens. The annual collection for Catholic
Relief Services will be taken in the archdiocese on the weekend of May 17-18.
Six worldwide Catholic relief agencies are funded by this collection, which
helps organizations provide pastoral support, humanitarian aid, and other vital assistance to the poor and
vulnerable around the world. The work supported through the Catholic Relief Services Collection
reunites families separated by war and disaster, teaches essential skills for success, and gives a voice to the
under-represented everywhere. Please be generous in the Catholic Relief Services collection. Your
support truly makes a difference. Please put your envelope in the regular collection basket. Thank you!!

Many people have experiences when their faith is tested or renewed. It can be
times of joy, hope, struggle, or just ordinary living. If you have a story to share
in our bulletin, please contact Marian Jenkins at [email protected] or 301645-5084. There’s no need for writing experience; help will be provided if you

who were confirmed, and those received into the church at the Easter Vigil
will be honored by our parish at this social. All are invited.
Women’s Worship Ministry
The Women’s Worship Ministry strives to encourage and uplift women in their
walk with the Lord by strengthening bonds with other Christian women and
sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. In simpler terms, relax, renew, rejoice!
Members find being with other women on the same journey comforting and
encouraging. Lifting our voices in song with thanksgiving and praise reaches deep
into our soul. And the natural outpouring of worship is prayer and scripture study.
Women’s Worship Ministry meets on the fourth Monday of each month. For the
month of May, we will meet on Tuesday, May 27. Worship and praise begins at
7:00 p.m. in church followed by bible study and scripture reflection. Just bring your bible and your
joyful voice! Contact: Kathy Moore, 301-843-839, [email protected].
Tuesday Adult Bible Study
Here’s a reminder that all are welcome to join the St. Peter’s Adult Bible
Study group that meets every Tuesday evening at 6:30 in the Adult Faith
Formation room in St. Peter's School. The focus of this group is to study
sacred scripture. Members use a scripture study guide at home, than gather
each week for group study, discussion and fellowship to deepen their
understanding of the lesson. All are welcome regardless of personal schedule, late arrival, early departure,
or prior commitments. Contact Bob Mattingly at 301-645-1311 for more information.

a él.
como diciendo "He estado allí" sonriendo mientras
pasan caminando.)
A partir
