Second Sunday of Easter
(Divine Mercy Sunday)
April 15, 2012
“ Who indeed is the victor over
the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of
God?”
- 1 John 5:5
DOUBT
The desire to be able to prove the existence of a divinity has troubled humanity since human consciousness first became aware of the
divine. To this very day we are fond of saying that any number of things—from sunsets to hot fudge sundaes—are “proof that there
is a God.” We get so caught up in the story of “doubting Thomas” that we fail to notice that today’s Gospel gives us John’s account
of Pentecost, the bestowing of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples following the Resurrection. Thomas, evidently, missed out not only
on seeing the Risen Christ, but receiving the Holy Spirit as well. This is not to be taken lightly and, perhaps, makes Thomas’ disbelief a bit easier to comprehend. It also makes his professing that Jesus is his Lord and God—the only time the New Testament explicitly refers to Jesus Christ as “God”—more remarkable.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Second Sunday of Easter
A Special Promise of Mercy
The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion will obtain complete forgiveness on sins and punishment. Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy,
but there must also be acts of mercy. . . I demand from you
deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are
to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You
must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself
from it. Thus, to fittingly observe the Feast of Mercy, we
should: 1) Celebrate the Feast on the Sunday after Easter; 2)
Sincerely repent of all our sins; 3) Place our complete trust in
Jesus; 4) Go to Confession, preferable before that Sunday; 5)
Receive Holy Communion on the day of the Feast; 6) Venerate the Image of the Divine Mercy; 7) Be merciful to others,
through our actions, words, and prayers on their behalf.
BLOOD DRIVE (Sunday, April 15)
Our first BLOOD DRIVE for 2012 is TODAY Sunday, April
15 in the Community Center from 8:00am to 1:00pm. No appointment is necessary. Please come and give your greatest
gift - “The Gift of Life”. Thanks and we hope to see you there!
MOTHER’S MASS LEAGUE
This year we will celebrate Mother’s Day
on May 13th. One of the nicest ways to
show how much you care is to enroll that
special person in the Mother’s Mass
League. Those enrolled in the league will
share in a Mass each week from this
Mother’s Day to next Mother’s Day. You
may enroll your mother, living or deceased,
grandmother, aunt, sister or that very special friend. Enrollment cards are available in the rectory office.
Due the good response to the 12:10 noon mass, Father Jaime has decided to keep it through all Easter
Time. All are invited to attend.

If you have a green thumb, then we could use
your help. We, as a parish, would like to establish a small volunteer group, of any age or sex,
to help beautify our parish grounds. The Gardening Angels will meet on Saturday, April
21st at 9:00am in front of the Rectory. Please
bring your own gardening tools. Fr. Andy appreciates your generosity in volunteering. See you Saturday!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Today was once called in Latin “Dominica in albis,” or “Sunday in White,” because the church
was full of newly baptized Christians wearing
their white baptismal garments. Another old title,
best forgotten, is “Low Sunday.” There’s nothing low about
this festive Sunday in Easter, the eighth day since the first
“Alleluia” rang out. In Christian tradition, the number eight is a
symbol of fulfillment, transition, breaking through the sevenday rhythm of life to a new way of being. That is why many
baptismal fonts have eight sides. The greatest feasts of our calendar are always extended for eight days, called an “octave.” In
a way, this means that this first week of
Easter is really considered to be one great day. This octave day
of Easter sees the best features of Easter still vibrant: joyful
alleluias, lush spring flowers everywhere, sprinkling with
water, and a lavish table where the Lord gives us himself as
bread and wine. For Orthodox Christians, today is the Easter
feast, since their tradition requires that the Christian Passover
cannot begin until the days of the Jewish Passover are ended.

Segundo Domingo de Pascua

“Quien es el que vence al
mundo? Sólo el que cree que Jesús es
el Hijo de Dios”
- 1 Juan 5:5
