This Week in Our Parish
From the Deacon
“Therefore, he who thinks that he is secure, take care
not to fall.”
(1Cor 10, 12)
I suspect that in most of our lives, there are those
occasions when we find it easier to see the fault in others
quicker than within ourselves. We hear a homily on
Sunday but excuse ourselves from the truth being
preached with all of its challenges because we do not see
ourselves as God sees us; as others see us; as we truly
are.
Our readings this weekend invite us to do some real
introspection, looking within ourselves rather than
looking outward. We take an honest look at ourselves
as we are before God. We learn to realize who we are;
we learn to admit our sins and weaknesses. It is possible
to be moved to repentance and by God’s grace, to learn
how to grow spiritually.
Moses saw himself totally inadequate as he encountered
God in the burning bush. St. Paul reminds his readers
that it is easy to fall into the trap of repeating the errors
of our past. Lent challenges us to level no accusations at
others. Rather, standing alone and in truth before God,
we are to give an accounting of our ourselves and be
responsible for our own actions. God will help us to
overcome our weaknesses but we have to admit the need
for Him in our lives.
St. Paul’s warning should be a signal to all of us who
think that we are above the rest when it comes to our
own goodness. Salvation comes to us as a gift made
available by God for the humble and the hopeful. It is a
gift that we can partake of again and again. God’s
mercy knows no bounds. The first step however is to
turn to God for His help in the first place. God will not
force Himself upon us. It is always our choice.
The season of Lent becomes our opportunity to do some
real soul searching. Like the unproductive fig tree in
today’s Gospel, we can find ourselves withered and
barren spiritually. These forty days allow us the
opportunity to re-evaluate who we are before God.
Through the disciplines of Lent: prayer, fasting and
almsgiving, we cultivate a new way of being.
Now is the time to prune away that which separates us
from God and others. Through frequent reception of
the Sacraments of Penance and Eucharist, we open our
hearts to becoming fruitful vines that are full of life. Let
us not make the mistake however by thinking that we
can put this off until another day. Even as this season
has an end so do our lives. Let’s not waste another
minute. Now is the time to turn back to God.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

EN NUESTRA PARROQUIA
Del Diácono:
“Así, pues, el que crea estar en pie tenga cuidado de no caer.”
(1 Cor 10, 12)
Yo sospecho que en la mayoría de nuestras vidas, hay
aquellas ocasiones cuando encontramos más fácil ver los
defectos en otros, rápido, antes que en nosotros mismos.
Nosotros escuchamos un sermón los Domingos pero nos
excusamos nosotros de la verdad siendo predicada con todos
sus desafíos por que no nos vemos nosotros por si mismo,
cómo Dios nos ve a nosotros; tal como somos
verdaderamente.
Nuestras lecturas este fín de semana nos invitan a hacernos
una verdadera inspección interna, viendo dentro de nosotros
en lugar de ver para afuera. Tomemos una mirada honesta a
nosotros mismos de como somos ante Dios. Aprendamos a
realizar quienes somos; aprendamos a admitir nuestros
pecados y debilidades. Es posible ser llevados al
arrepentimiento y por la gracia de Dios, a aprender en como
crecer espiritualmente.
Moisés se vio por si mismo totalmente inadecuado cuando él
encontró a Dios en el arbusto en llamas. San Pablo le
recuerda a sus lectores qué es fácil caer en la trampa de
repetir los errores de nuestro pasado. La Cuaresma nos
desafía a no lanzar acusaciones hacia otros. En su lugar, de
pie solos y de verdad ante Dios, debemos de dar cuenta de
nosotros mismos y ser responsables de nuestras propias
acciones. Dios nos ayudará a vencer nuestras debilidades
pero tenemos que admitir la necesidad de El en nuestras
vidas.
La advertencia de San Pablo debe ser una señal para todos
nosotros que pensamos que estamos arriba del resto en
cuanto viene a nuestra propia perfección. La Salvación viene
a nosotros cómo un regalo dado por Dios para el humilde y el
lleno de esperanza. Es un regalo del que podemos participar
una y otra vez. La misericordia de Dios no conoce límites. El
primer paso sin embargo es de mirar hacia Dios por Su ayuda
en primer lugar. Dios no se impondrá por Si Mismo sobre
nosotros. Será siempre nuestra elección.
La temporada de Cuaresma se convierte en nuestra
oportunidad de hacer una búsqueda real de nuestra alma. Tal
cómo la higuera improductiva en el Evangelio de hoy, nos
podemos encontrar marchitos y estériles espiritualmente.
Estos cuarenta días nos dan la oportunidad de re-evaluarnos
de quienes somos ante Dios. Por medio de las disciplinas de
Cuaresma: oración, ayuno y caridad, nosotros cultivamos un
nuevo modo de ser.
Ahora es la hora de podar aquello que nos separa de Dios y de
los demás. A través de la recepción frecuente de los
Sacramentos de Penitencia y Eucaristía, nosotros abrimos
nuestro corazón para ser ramas fructíferas que son llenas de
vida. No cometamos el error sin embargo de pensar que
podemos lo podemos dejar para otro día. Igualmente como
esta temporada tiene un final, así mismo nuestras vidas. No
perdamoa otro minuto. Ahora es la hora de volvernos hacia
Dios.
