... 13. The apostles never forgot the moment when Jesus
touched their hearts: “It was about four o’clock in the afternoon” (Jn
1:39). Togeth- er with Jesus, this remembrance makes present to us
“a great cloud of witnesses” (Heb 12:1), some of whom, as believers,
we recall with great joy: “Remember your leaders, those who spoke
toyouthewordofGod”(Heb13:7). Someof them were ordinary people
who were close to us and introduced us to the life of faith: “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother
Lois and your mother Eunice” (2 Tim 1:5). The believer is essentially
“one who remembers”.

us together to read the signs of the times, the XIII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops gathered from 7-28 October 2012 to

SACRAMENT OF EUCHARIST

Pope Francis continued
his catechesis on the Sacraments, focusing on the Eucharist.
The Eucharist, he said, constitutes the source of
“the very life of the Church.” Calling to mind the physical
signs of the Eucharist, such as the altar, the Holy Father
said they resemble a banquet.
“Word and Bread become altogether one in the
Mass, as in the Last Supper, when all Jesus’ words, all the
signs he made, were condensed into the gesture of breaking the bread and offering the chalice, anticipation of the
sacrifice of the Cross, and in those words: “Take and eat,
this is my Body … Take and drink, this is my Blood,” the
Pope said.
The Holy Father went on to say that the Last Supper was the gesture of thanksgiving from Christ to God
for His love and mercy. Noting the meaning of the Greek
word for Eucharist means thanksgiving, the Pope said
that it encompasses God’s love for man through Jesus’
Death and Resurrection.
Although all the liturgical signs remind one of a
banquet, the Holy Father stressed that it is much more
than that: it is “the memorial of Jesus’ Passover, the central mystery of salvation.” Thus, the Eucharist is a focal
point to God’s action of salvation, while giving us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet with God.
Concluding his catechesis, Pope Francis invited
the faithful to thank God for the gift of the Eucharist. “Let
us ask Him then that this Sacrament may continue to keep
His presence alive in the Church and mould our communities in charity and communion, according to the heart of
the Father.”
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning,
In this third catechesis on the Sacraments, we
pause to reflect on Confirmation or “Chrismation”, which
must be understood in continuity with Baptism, to which
it is inseparably linked. These two Sacraments, together
with the Eucharist, form a single saving event — called
“Christian initiation” — in which we are inserted into Jesus Christ, who died and rose, and become new creatures
and members of the Church. This is why these three Sacraments were originally celebrated on one occasion, at the
end of the catechumenal journey, normally at the Easter
Vigil. The path of formation and gradual insertion into the
Christian community, which could last even up to a few
years, was thus sealed. One travelled step by step to reach
Baptism, then Confirmation and the Eucharist.
We commonly speak of the sacrament of “Chrismation”, a word that signifies “anointing”. And, in effect,
through the oil called “sacred Chrism” we are conformed,
in the power of the Spirit, to Jesus Christ, who is the only
true “anointed One”, the “Messiah”, the Holy One of
God. The word “Confirmation” then reminds us that this
Sacrament brings an increase and deepening of baptismal
grace: it unites us more firmly to Christ, it renders our
bond with the Church more perfect, and it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the
faith, ... to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to
be ashamed of his Cross (cf. Catechism of the Catholic
Church, n. 1303).
For this reason, it is important to take care that our
children, our young people, receive this sacrament. We
all take care that they are baptized and this is good, but
perhaps we do not take so much care to ensure that they
are confirmed. Thus they remain at a midpoint in their
journey and do not receive the Holy Spirit, who is so important in the Christian life since he gives us the strength
to go on. Let us think a little, each one of us: do we truly
care whether our children, our young people, receive
Confirmation? This is important, it is important! And if
you have children or adolescents at home who have not
yet received it and are at the age to do so, do everything
possible to ensure that they complete their Christian initiation and receive the power of the Holy Spirit. It is important!
Naturally it is important to prepare those being
confirmed well, leading them towards a personal commitment to faith in Christ and reawakening in them a
sense of belonging to the Church.
Confirmation, like every Sacrament, is not the
work of men but of God, who cares for our lives in such
a manner as to mould us in the image of his Son, to make
us capable of loving like him. He does it by infusing his
in us his Holy Spirit, whose action pervades the whole
person and his entire life, as reflected in the seven gifts
that Tradition, in light of the Sacred Scripture, has always
highlighted. These seven gifts: I do not want to ask you if
you remember the seven gifts. Perhaps you will all know
them.... But I will say them on your behalf. What are
these gifts? Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude,
Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord. And these gifts
have been given to us precisely with the Holy Spirit in the
Sacrament of Confirmation. I therefore intend to dedicate
the catecheses that follow those on the Sacrament to these
seven gifts.
When we welcome the Holy Spirit into our hearts
and allow him to act, Christ makes himself present in us
and takes shape in our lives; through us, it will be he —
Christ himself — who prays, forgives, gives hope and
consolation, serves the brethren, draws close to the needy
and to the least, creates community and sows peace.
Think how important this is: by means of the Holy Spirit,
Christ himself comes to do all this among us and for us.
That is why it is important that children and young people
receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Dear brothers and sisters, let us remember that we
have received Confirmation! All of us! Let us remember
it, first in order to thank the Lord for this gift, and then
to ask him to help us to live as true Christians, to walk
always with joy in the Holy Spirit who has been given to
us.

En esta tercera catequesis sobre los sacramentos
nos detenemos en la Confirmación, que se entiende en continuidad con el Bautismo, al cual está vinculado de modo inseparable. Estos
dos sacramentos, juntamente con la Eucaristía, forman
un único evento salvífico, que se llama —«iniciación
cristiana»—, en el que somos introducidos en Jesucristo muerto y resucitado, y nos convertimos en nuevas
creaturas y miembros de la Iglesia. He aquí por qué en
los orígenes estos tres sacramentos se celebraban en un
único momento, al término del camino catecumenal,
normalmente en la Vigilia pascual. Así se sellaba el itinerario de formación y de inserción gradual en la comunidad cristiana que podía durar incluso algunos años.
Se hacía paso a paso para llegar al Bautismo, luego a la
Confirmación y a la Eucaristía.
Comúnmente [en italiano] se habla de sacramen
to de la «Cresima», palabra que significa «unción». Y,
en efecto, a través del óleo llamado «sagrado Crisma»
somos conformados, con el poder del Espíritu, a Jesucristo, quien es el único auténtico «ungido», el «Mesías», el Santo de Dios. El término «Confirmación» nos
recuerda luego que este sacramento aporta un crecimiento de la gracia bautismal: nos une más firmemente
a Cristo; conduce a su realización nuestro vínculo con
la Iglesia; nos concede una fuerza especial del Espíritu
Santo para difundir y defender la fe, para confesar el
nombre de Cristo y para no avergonzarnos nunca de su
cruz (cf. Catecismo de la Iglesia católica, n. 1303).
Por esto es importante estar atentos para que
nuestros niños, nuestros muchachos, reciban este sacramento. Todos nosotros estamos atentos de que sean
bautizados y esto es bueno, pero tal vez no estamos
muy atentos a que reciban la Confirmación. De este
modo quedarán a mitad de camino y no recibirán el Espíritu Santo, que es tan importante en la vida cristiana,
porque nos da la fuerza para seguir adelante. Pensemos
un poco, cada uno de nosotros: ¿tenemos de verdad la
preocupación de que nuestros niños, nuestros chavales
reciban la Confirmación? Esto es importante, es importante. Y si vosotros, en vuestra casa, tenéis niños,
muchachos, que aún no la han recibido y tienen la edad
para recibirla, haced todo lo posible para que lleven a
término su iniciación cristiana y reciban la fuerza del
Espíritu Santo. ¡Es importante!
Naturalmente es importante ofrecer a los confir
mandos una buena preparación, que debe estar orientada a conducirlos hacia una adhesión personal a la fe
en Cristo y a despertar en ellos el sentido de pertenencia
a la Iglesia.
La Confirmación, como cada sacramento, no es
obra de los hombres, sino de Dios, quien se ocupa de
nuestra vida para modelarnos a imagen de su Hijo, para

hacernos capaces de amar como Él. Lo hace infundiendo en nosotros su Espíritu Santo, cuya acción impregna
a toda la persona y toda la vida, como se trasluce de los
siete dones que la Tradición, a la luz de la Sagrada Escritura, siempre ha evidenciado. Estos siete dones: no
quiero preguntaros si os recordáis de los siete dones. Tal
vez todos los sabéis... Pero los digo en vuestro nombre.
¿Cuáles son estos dones? Sabiduría, inteligencia, consejo, fortaleza, ciencia, piedad y temor de Dios. Y estos
dones nos han sido dados precisamente con el Espíritu
Santo en el sacramento de la Confirmación. A estos dones quiero dedicar las catequesis que seguirán luego de
los sacramentos.
Cuando acogemos el Espíritu Santo en nuestro
corazón y lo dejamos obrar, Cristo mismo se hace presente en nosotros y toma forma en nuestra vida; a través
de nosotros, será Él, Cristo mismo, quien reza, perdona,
infunde esperanza y consuelo, sirve a los hermanos, se
hace cercano a los necesitados y a los últimos, crea comunión, siembra paz. Pensad cuán importante es esto:
por medio del Espíritu Santo, Cristo mismo viene a
hacer todo esto entre nosotros y por nosotros. Por ello
es importante que los niños y los muchachos reciban el
sacramento de la Confirmación.
Queridos hermanos y hermanas, recordemos
que hemos recibido la Confirmación. ¡Todos nosotros!
Recordémoslo ante todo para dar gracias al Señor por
este don, y, luego, para pedirle que nos ayude a vivir
como cristianos auténticos, a caminar siempre con
alegría conforme al Espíritu Santo que se nos ha dado.
SACRAMENTO DE LA EUCARISTÍA
Nuestra catequesis de hoy está centrada en la
Eucaristía, corazón de la iniciación cristiana y fuente de
la vida de la Iglesia.
Lo que vemos cuando nos reunimos para cel
ebrar la Misa, nos ayuda a introducirnos en el Misterio.
En el centro encontramos el altar, una mesa preparada,
que nos hace pensar en un banquete. Sobre la mesa hay
una cruz para indicarnos que en ese altar se ofrece el
sacrificio de Cristo: Él es el alimento que recibimos
bajo las especies del pan y del vino. Y junto a la mesa,
está el ambón, desde donde se proclama la Palabra de
Dios, mediante la que el Señor nos habla.
Cuando la Iglesia celebra la Eucaristía, realiza
el memorial de la Pascua del Señor, en el que Cristo
se hace misteriosamente presente y nosotros podemos
participar, decimos “comulgar”, en su pasión, muerte
y resurrección. Así, la Eucaristía nos configura de
modo único y profundo con Jesús, renovando nuestro
corazón, nuestra existencia y nuestra relación con Él y
con los hermanos, y nos hace pregustar la comunión
con el Padre en el banquete del Reino de los cielos.

... 13. Los Apóstoles jamás olvidaron el momento en que
Jesús les tocó el corazón: « Era alrededor de las cuatro de la tarde
» (Jn 1,39). Junto con Jesús, la memoria nos hace presente «una
verdadera nube de testigos» . Entre ellos, se destacan algunas personas que incidieron de manera especial para hacer brotar nuestro
gozo creyente: «Acordaos de aquellos dirigentes que os anunciaron la Palabra de Dios» . A veces se trata de personas sencillas
y cercanas que nos iniciaron en la vida de la fe: «Tengo presente la
sinceridad de tu fe, esa fe que tuvieron tu abuela Loide y tu madre
Eunice » . El creyente es fundamentalmente « memorioso ».
14. En la escucha del Espíritu, que nos ayuda a reconocer
comunitariamente los signos de los tiempos, del 7 al 28 de octubre de 2012 se celebró la XIII Asamblea General Ordinaria del
Sínodo de los Obispos sobre el tema La nueva evangelización para
la transmisión de la fe cristiana. Allí se recordó que la nueva evangelización convoca a todos y se realiza fundamentalmente en tres
ámbitos. En primer lugar, mencionemos el ámbito de la pastoral
ordinaria, « animada por el fuego del Espíritu, para encender los
corazones de los fieles que regularmente frecuentan la comunidad
y que se reúnen en el día del Señor para nutrirse de su Palabra y del
Pan de vida eterna».También se incluyen en este ámbito los fieles
que conservan una fe católica intensa y sincera, expresán- dola de
diversas maneras, aunque no participen frecuentemente del culto.

María será la dirección correcta y preguntarle si pensará en hacer
un compromiso a la campaña o darle gracias si ya lo ha hecho.

Padre, Tu nos has dado a nosotros en Santa María esta
porción de Tú Reino para que llevemos el nombre de Tú Hijo
Jesús y Su salvación a todos en Escondido. Envía al Espíritu
Santo para que nos guíe y que habrá los corazones de nosotros
en Santa María en generosidad, para hacer realidad nuestro nuevo
centro parroquial y la expansión de la Iglesia. Te pedimos, Padre,
