Not satisfied with merely being one of the most important
platforms for young filmmakers in Latin America, but also
a space for artistic and professional development, the
festival has created a diverse INDUSTRY area in order to
stimulate Mexican feature film production while projecting
its potential as a cultural commodity worthy of international investment. Over the last ten years, the INTERNATIONAL PITCHING MARKET has dedicated a space, the
first of its kind in Latin America, for the co-production and
production of independent film projects, with over 20 projects financed to date.
Siguiendo nuestro objetivo de unir y enfocar fuerzas para lograr
mejores condiciones dentro del quehacer cinematográfico nacional, crecen y se diversifican las áreas de acción con proyectos como: el THINK TANK (espacio de diálogo y debate proactivo entre especialistas de diversos ámbitos para encontrar
nuevas soluciones a la distribución y exhibición del cine Mexicano e Internacional independiente en nuevas plataformas de
difusión); el FORO BILATERAL (espacio para exponer y dialogar
sobre la situación actual de la industria fílmica de México y otros
países); MEXICANNES (Residencia de verano en Guanajuato,
en conjunto con la Cinéfondation La Résidence); INCUBADORA (Asesorías privadas con reconocidos profesionales de la
industria), el CONCURSO NACIONAL DE GUIÓN CINEMATOGRÁFICO para cortometrajes y largometrajes, y el TALLER DE
GUIONISMO DE LA VANCOUVER FILM SCHOOL.
Maintaining our objective of uniting and refocusing forces
to achieve better conditions within the film industry, the
festival’s industry has grown to include: the THINK TANK
(a space reuniting experts from different fields to discuss
and propose new ideas to bolster Mexican and International independent film distribution in new platforms);
the BILATERAL FORUM (an open space for developing
dialog and co-productions between Mexico and other
countries); MEXICANNES (Summer Residence Program
and Master Classes in Guanajuato, in coordination with
the Cinéfondation La Résidence); INCUBATOR (private consulting sessions with top industry professionals);
the NATIONAL SCREENWRITING CONTEST for short
and feature films; and the VANCOUVER FILM SCHOOL
SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP.

Ocupados no sólo en brindar una de las plataformas más
importantes para jóvenes cineastas en América Latina, sino
también en ofrecer un espacio para el desarrollo artístico y
profesional, el festival creó un área de INDUSTRIA como reto
para estimular la producción del cine mexicano y proyectar
su potencial como opción cultural y de inversión de clase
mundial. Durante 10 años consecutivos, el festival ha dedicado
un espacio para la coproducción y producción de proyectos
fílmicos por medio del INTERNATIONAL PITCHING MARKET,
primera jornada de coproducción en Latinoamérica, con más
de 20 proyectos cinematográficos financiados hasta la fecha.

Con el espíritu que anima este festival, la diversidad y la
apertura a manifestaciones fílmicas de otros países, el
Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía y el Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato, organizan la sexta edición
del Foro Bilateral, cuyo objetivo es abrir un espacio de
negocio para la comunidad cinematográfica.
Este año, el foro se realizará con la participación de autoridades y miembros de la industria del cine de México y
Colombia, quienes en forma conjunta explorarán áreas de
oportunidad que permitan a ambas cinematografías fortalecer la producción, co-producción y distribución de su cine.
La relación fílmica entre México y Colombia ha tenido resultados interesantes, dado así que en los últimos años
se ha concretado la co-producción de ocho largometrajes, indicador de que el trabajo coordinado puede extenderse a otros ámbitos de la cadena industrial del cine.

Como parte de la experiencia que puede enriquecer el
quehacer fílmico en México, podemos mencionar la presencia de la Dirección de Cinematografía del Ministerio
de Cultura, el Consejo Nacional para las Artes y la Cultura en Cinematografía y el Fondo Mixto de Promoción
Cinematográfica “PROIMÁGENES Colombia”, el cual
busca fomentar la producción y apoyar a los creadores.
Este Fondo tiene como objetivo fortalecer al sector fílmico colombiano, impulsando la concertación de políticas
públicas y sectoriales, con el fin de articular reglas de
juego claras que impulsen la cinematografía del país.
Con problemas similares a los de nuestra industria, como
la distribución articulada y formación de nuevos públicos
locales, el intercambio de puntos de vista con Colombia
nos permitirá visualizar soluciones imaginativas y viables
que, con la conjunción de esfuerzos, logren que nuestras cinematografías sean parte del imaginario colectivo
y propicien su desarrollo como industria audiovisual.
In the spirit of the festival’s diversity and its welcoming of
multi-cultural cinematographic works, the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) and Guanajuato International Film Festival
present the sixth annual Bilateral Forum, with the goal of
providing an open space for business to the film community.
This year, the forum welcomes participant authorities and
film industry members from Mexico and spotlight country
Colombia, who together will explore specific areas of interest that allow for both countries to strengthen their film production, co-production and distribution.
Mexico’s existing relationship with Colombia has already
produced interesting results. In the last few years we’ve
achieved co-production of eight feature films, indicating that
a coordinated work force can extend into other fields within
our industries.
Serving as an example of how Mexican production can
be enriched by Colombian experience, we’re aided by the
presence of Dirección de Cinematografía del Ministerio de
Cultura (Ministry of Culture’s FIlm Department), Consejo
Nacional para las Artes y la Cultura en Cinematografía (National Film Council) and the Fondo Mixto de Promoción
Cinematográfica “PROIMÁGENES Colombia” (Mixed Promotional Film Fund) all of which foster film production by
supporting its creators whilst also promoting a reconciliation of public and sector based policy, resulting in a clear
set of rules, essential to the growth of their industry.
Sharing similar problems, such as reliable distribution structures and a need for new local audiences, an exchange of
ideas with Colombia can allow us to come up with inspired,
viable solutions to promote development within both our
audiovisual industries.

Cineplex es una empresa colombiana que exporta cine nacional a Centroamérica. En 1993, Elba Rodríguez de McAllister y
su cuñado Iván McAllister, tuvieron la necesidad de encontrar
un espacio de distribución de cine alternativo. Es decir, buscar
historias diferentes a las que se pueden encontrar en el cine
netamente comercial para poderlas exhibir a los demás países.
Cineplex is a Colombian company, which exports national films to
Central America. In 1993, Elba Rodríguez de McAllister and her
brother-in-law, Ivan McAllister, sought out room for alternative
cinema. They wanted to find stories that you couldn’t find in the
commercial cinema so they could exhibit them to other countries.

Claudia was born in Bogotá, Colombia. She

Constituted in 2005 in Cali, Colombia. The film ‘El Rey’, directed by Antonio Dorado, has won awards at various international film festivals. The mission of Imagen Latina is to promote national and regional film industry. In 2005, the
foundation received the stimulation of the Cinematographic Promotion Mixed Fund for the production of the documentary ‘Apaporis, in search of one river’. Also, it was co-producer in 2006 of the film ‘Adiós Ana Elisa’. Currently,
the foundation is in post-production of the film ‘Amores Peligrosos’, whose script won support for development of
Ibermedia and production support of the Cinematographic Development Fund of the Ministry of Culture in Colombia.

En el marco de la 16a edición del Festival Internacional
de Cine Guanajuato (GIFF), se llevará a cabo la cuarta
edición del programa INCUBADORA, del 19 al 28 de julio,
en las ciudades de San Miguel de Allende y Guanajuato
Capital.
Under the 16th edition of the Guanajuato International Film
Festival (GIFF), will be held the fourth edition of the INCUBATOR, from 19th to 28th July in the cities of San Miguel de
Allende and Guanajuato.
INCUBATOR is a project focused on nurturing and developing the next generation of Mexican and International filmmakers and producers attending the festival. Participants
in INCUBATOR receive one-on-one advising sessions from
industry professionals on the subjects of script evaluation,
film financing, international coproduction, distribution, online film distribution, pitching, packaging and promoting
their projects at film festival and markets, among others.
During the festival over 100 young filmmakers will receive
one-on-one sessions.

con base en su trayectoria profesional (cortometrajes,
largometrajes, documental o televisión) así como
el tema, sinopsis o material en producción que han
preparado para su próximo proyecto. Los becados de
MexiCannes, al igual que los cineastas, tanto mexicanos
como internacionales, cuyos trabajos se encuentren en
competencia en el Festival, serán invitados a participar
en las sesiones de asesoría.
Participants in INCUBATOR are chosen based upon their
professional career thus far (short film, feature film, television drama, video clip or commercial) and the theme, synopsis, script or material in development they have prepared
for their next feature film or project. Sessions are private and
will have a maximum duration of 20 minutes. INCUBATOR
extends an invitation to the Cinéfondation Residence Laureates participating in MexiCannes, as well as all Mexican and
international filmmakers selected for competition in GIFF
2013, to take part in one-on-one advising sessions, during which they will meet personally with industry delegates
and receive advice on their own specific projects in development.

La Résidence du Festival acoge anualmente a una docena de jóvenes directores que trabajan en su proyecto de
primer o segundo largometraje de ficción, en dos sesiones de una duración de cuatro meses y medio (desde el 1 de
octubre hasta mediados de febrero y desde finales de febrero hasta mediados de julio). Desde su creación en 2000,
la Résidence ha recibido a más de setenta cineastas procedentes de una cuarentena de países. Cerca de cincuenta
cineastas salidos de esta “Villa Medici” del cine han visto sus películas seleccionadas en festivales internacionales
y distribuidas en salas. La Résidence pone a disposición de estos cineastas un lugar de residencia en el corazón de
París, un programa personalizado de ayuda para la escritura de su guión y un programa colectivo de reuniones con
profesionales del cine.
The Résidence du Festival welcomes every year a dozen young directors who work there on their first or second fictional feature film project, in two sessions lasting four and a half months (from October 1st to mid February, and from
the end of February to mid July). Since its creation in 2000, the Résidence has welcomed more than seventy filmmakers from more than forty different countries. It makes available to them a place of residence in the heart of Paris,
a personalised programme accompanying the writing of their scripts, and a collective programme of forums with film
industry professionals. Nearly fifty filmmakers emerging from the great halls of this “Villa Médicis” of cinema have
seen their films selected by international festivals and distributed in theatres.

Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe with a variety of important tools. The PRODUIRE AU SUD workshop was
created in 2000 in Nantes, in order to support the creation of a network of young producers from Asia, Africa and
Latin America and lay the foundations for lasting cooperation between European film professionals and emerging
professionals from the South. The workshop aims to familiarize producers and film directors based in the South with a
variety of important tools and international co-production techniques by coaching individual projects in development.

Este año, el International Pitching Market contará con
la participación de importantes fondos, productores,
directores, distribuidores de Colombia -País invitado de
Honor- Europa, Estados Unidos, Latinoamérica y México.
Su décima edición pretende poner énfasis en proyectos
que puedan ser coproducidos entre estos territorios.
Se recibieron 95 proyectos, de los cuales 20 fueron
seleccionados para presentarse en el 10IPM junto con
los 14 proyectos MexiCannes - Cinéfondation. Este año
una selección de proyectos de TorinoFilmLab, Cinemart
and Paris Projects también serán presentados.
As part of its ongoing mission to promote the cinematographic arts within Mexico, as well as raise the international
profile of the Mexican film industry while stimulating international coproduction, the Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF) presents the 10th International Pitching Market,
which annually unites international producers, investors and
diverse film financing institutions from all around the world
together with Mexico’s feature film projects in development,
a selection of “Cross-over” projects and a selection of MexiCannes projects. These meetings aim to boost co-production between Mexico and countries abroad while taking
advantage of the unique laws, fiscal incentives and funds
that each country has to offer. In past editions the Pitching
Market has been pleased to welcome representatives from
Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, France, Germany, Spain,
Netherlands, India, the United States, the United Kingdom
and the Republic of Korea.
This year, the International Pitching Market welcomes the
participation of producers, investors and funds from Colombia, our 2013 guest country of honor, Europe, the United
States, Latin America and Mexico. The 10th edition of the
Pitching Market will focus on projects that could be co-produced between these territories and Mexico. 95 projects
were received and 20 were selected to be presented at the

Verano MexiCannes en Guanajuato, México.

Laura Astorga (San José, Costa Rica, 1975).
Creció en Managua, La Habana, San José,
Miami y Frankfurt. Laura ha sido guionista
para series de televisión y ha dirigido cortometrajes documentales; asimismo ha trabajado como ayudante de cámara y directora
de casting para comerciales de televisión y
largometrajes. Su primera película, Princesas Rojas, se estrenó en el 2012. Ngöbe, su
nuevo proyecto, lo ha estado trabajando en
un par de cursos de desarrollo.
Raised in Managua, La Habana, San Jose,
Miami and Frankfurt. Laura has served as
scriptwriter for TV series, directed short
documentaries and worked as a trainer for
camera and as a casting director for TV
advertising spots and feature films. Her first
Feature Film, ‘Princesas Rojas’ was released
in 2012. ‘Ngöbe’, her new project, has been
workshopped in a couple of courses of development.
Aygul Bakanova (Kirguistán, 1982).
Especialista en guionismo para televisión y
desarrolla su carrera en la televisora más
grande de Rusia. Aygul hizo la Maestría en
Realización Cinematográfica en la Escuela
de Cine de Londres. Para su proyecto final,
escribió, dirigió y coprodujo un cortometraje que fue premiado en la competencia
internacional del Festival de Cine Locarno
y el cual ha sido proyectado en varios festivales alrededor del mundo. Aygul está actualmente en desarrollo de su ópera prima.
Specialized in script writing for television and
embarked on a career writing for Russia’s
biggest television stations. Aygul started the
MA Filmmaking course at the London Film
School. For her final project, she wrote, directed and co-produced a short story which
was premiered in the International Competition of Locarno Film Festival and has been
screened at various film festivals around the
world. Aygul is currently developing her first
feature project.

Danish filmmaker born in Dubai. He studied at

Fleifel and Patrick Campbell released Fleifel’s

through their production company Nakba Filmworks. Currently, the film has received multiple awards and screened in the official selection in Berlin, Abu Dhabi and Palm Springs.

Rungano Nyoni (Republic of Zambia)
Nació en Lusaka, Zambia y se mudó a Wales, Reino Unido cuando tenía apenas 10

Su película más reciente, Mwansa The
Great, ha sido seleccionada en 80 festivales

William Vega (Cali, Colombia, 1981).

She has worked on international environmental and social co-operation projects between South America, Russia and

Tantri y Tantra, hermanos gemelos de 12 años de edad, viven en un
pequeño pueblo en Bali. Tantra se enferma y poco a poco comienza
a perder los sentidos. Tantri tiene que aceptar la realidad de que
ahora tendrá que enfrentar la vida sola. Ella comienza a contarle
historias a su hermano, pero él ya no puede escuchar. Es entonces
cuando ella comienza a imitar las cosas que encuentra y sin darse
cuenta, le comienza a dar vida a su mundo a través del baile. Mientras la condición de Tantra empeora cada vez más, Tantri baila para
mantener vivo su mundo y sus historias a salvo.
12 year-old Tantri and Tantra, are twin brother and sister living in a little
village in Bali. One day Tantra is very sick and he loses his senses one
by one. Tantri has to accept the reality that she now has to face life
alone. She tries to tell stories to her brother, but he can no longer hear.
She then starts to imitate the things she finds. Without realizing it, she’s
bringing her world to life through dance. As Tantra’s condition worsens,

Based on true events, Dog Days is a thriller that intertwines the characters of Lulu, a single mother, and Sunny, a cross-dressing performer
whom she meets in a bar and learns is romantically involved with her
boyfriend. On one evening, entrusted with her son, Lulu’s boyfriend
drops her off at work and promises to pick Lulu up after her shift.
However, he does not return. What follows is Lulu’s journey to find her

eight children and mother-in-law all by herself. After a series of unsuccessful odd jobs, Kusum falls into prostitution. She is soon arrested in
a brothel by the police. When news of what has befallen their mother
reaches school, the children are expelled. From then on, it is the family

Ain El-Helweh is a refugee camp, 40 kilometres south of Beirut. The
camp is plunged into chaos with the sudden arrival of several high profile UN officials. It quickly transpires that, after 65 years, the people of
Ain El-Helweh have been granted the right to return to their homeland.
The inhabitants go wild with excitement. But before Abu Osama, one
of the camp’s longest residents, can return to Palestine, he must first
come to terms with leaving home.

imprisoned for murder. The Government is under fire for having interfered on indigenous lands. Dulce receives a Presidential pardon, and
is released. She returns to her community to find that everyone rejects
her, and that her family has abandoned her. She tries to find work in the
city but ends up on the street. Finally, someone contacts her about an
illegal job. She has to choose between this kind of freedom, or return to
prison, where she felt a greater sense of liberty.

Think Tanks dedicated to addressing problems and finding
solutions to secure a space devoted to Mexican and international independent cinema, incorporating new technologies
and streaming for content distribution and exhibition. Specialists from around the world such as CANANA, The Film
Collaborative, iTunes México, Youtube, HBO Latino, Microsoft, Youtube among others met to discuss topics ranging
from legislation reform, territories, to revamping film distribution and marketing models, to applying new technologies.
The main objective of those Brainstorming Sessions is to
devise mechanisms so that national and Latin American independent films can be seen on other platforms (on line) in
addition to designing strategies that provide profits for producers on such spaces.

TorinoFilmLab (TFL) es un laboratorio internacional que

Las modalidades en capacitación como Script&Pitch,
Audience Design, Writer’s Room and AdaptLab, así como
las de producción –y desarrollo de proyecto- orientadas
desde el programa FrameWork, corren en paralelo durante el año y tienen su momento de cierre en el TFL Meeting
Event de noviembre durante el Torino Film Festival. Una
vez ahí, los proyectos son presentados ante un selecto
grupo de importantes personalidades decisivas de todo
el mundo en el medio de la producción independiente.
Este año TorinoFilmLab está encantado de presentar su
colaboración con el Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato en una nueva iniciativa: la Cinéfondation-La Residence Script Consultancy. El TFL pondrá su dominio
pedagógico al servicio de algunos proyectos seleccionados en la última sesión del programa de CinéfondationLa Residence del Festival de Cine de Cannes para que
asista al GIFF como parte de la MexiCannes Summer
Residence.
Mediante un taller intensivo, Anita Voorham, una de las
expertas asesoras en guión del TFL, ofrecerá sesiones
individuales para seis de los residentes. El taller se llevará
a cabo en San Miguel de Allende del 21 al 23 de Julio,
previo a las presentaciones de los proyectos en el International Pitching Market de Guanajuato, que les servirá
también como apoyo para futuras presentaciones abiertas de pitch.
TorinoFilmLab (TFL) is a year-round, international laboratory
supporting emerging talents from all over the world, with a
focus on first and second feature films, through training, development and funding activities.
The training initiatives Script&Pitch, Audience Design, Writer’s Room and AdaptLab, as well as the production and
project development, oriented FrameWork programme, run
parallel during the year. They reach their conclusive moment
at theTFL Meeting Event in November during the Torino Film
Festival, when projects are presented to a selected group of
Decision Makers from all over the world working in independent filmmaking.
This year, TorinoFilmLab is delighted to partner with the
Guanajuato International Film Festival on a new initiative: the
Cinéfondation-La Residence Script Consultancy by TorinoFilmLab. TFL will put its pedagogical expertise to the service
of some of the projects selected from the latest sessions
of the Cinéfondation-La Residence from the Cannes Film
Festival to attend GIFF as part of the MexiCannes Summer
Residence Program.
During a concentrated workshop, Anita Voorham, one of
TorinoFilmLab’s internationally experienced script advisors,
will be offering individual consultancy sessions to six of the
MexiCannes Summer Residence Program participants. The
workshop, which will take place in San Miguel de Allende
on July 21-23, will precede the presentation of the projects
at the International Pitching Market in Guanajuato, and thus
also serve as a further support for the preparation of the
public pitches.

Habiendo trabajado en el campo de la producción por más
de 15 años, creo firmemente que cada filme es un prototipo
y requiere de diferentes tipos de seguimiento por parte del
productor. A partir de los filmes en los que he participado,
compartiré mi punto de vista sobre cómo presentar un proyecto al mercado, y sobre cómo convertir un proyecto en
película. Revelaré aspectos exitosos de estos procesos así
como los errores y las discusiones. Esta presentación se
acompañará posteriormente de trabajo en grupo sobre los
proyectos participantes y sus necesidades.
Having worked in the production field for 15 years, I firmly
believe that each film is a prototype and asks for a different
type of commitment from the producer. Through the films I
was involved on, I will share my subjective point of view of
how to introduce a project to the market and how a project can become a film. I will relate the successful aspects of
these processes as well as the mistakes and the disputes.
This presentation will then be followed by a group work on the
participants’ projects and aspirations.

Vancouver Film School (VFS), one of the most distinguished
entertainment arts institutions in the world, will be offering
this year’s GIFF participants the opportunity to participate in
a short film writing workshop. From all scripts submitted, 12
screenplays and writers will be selected to participate in the
workshops led by Michael Baser, Department Head for VFS’s
Writing for Film & Television Program.

MICHAEL BASER
Se graduó del City College de New York en 1974. Inició su
carrera como guionista, productor, creativo y productor de
series de TV, como son Good Times, The Jeffersons, One
Day At A Time, Maude, A Year At The Top, Carter Country, Three’s Company, 9 to 5, What’s Happening, Melba, Full
House, We Got It Made, Campus Cops, Rhythm& Blues,
Smart Guy y So Little Time; también realizó una docena de
pilotos para las cadenas ABC, NBC, CBS y Fox. A lo largo
de 33 años, ha trabajado como guionista y productor en el
cine y la televisión americana.
Graduated from the City College of New York in 1974. He began his career as a screenwriter, producer, creative and producer of TV series such as Good Times, The Jeffersons, One
Day at a Time, Three’sCompany, 9 to 5, What`s Happening,

A course designed for directors to better understand themselves and the language of the actor. By introducing them
into the world of Personality Types and how these translate into the development and creation of characters, they
will strengthen their skills as writers and directors; achieving
clear and concise communication in their filmmaking ( producer, Screenwriter, actors etc…), an organized environment
to work in, remarkable characters, solid performances and a
dynamic visual landscape.

Is the artistic director of Promenade Conservatory for the Performing Arts, one of the most recognized drama schools in
Hollywood. She graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris, the
American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and Film
Program of New York University. She studied screenwriting
with Syd Field for six years. She has directed more than a
dozen plays and three short films for which she has been
awarded first place in the Hollywood Film Festival. Her Birthday Girl solo show opened at the International Theatre Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
She teaches seminars in Japan, Brazil and France, where this
summer acted and directed the play A Picasso that was acclaimed by critics and the public.

“Meet the Funders” presenta oportunidades de financiación especializadas en apoyo de los artistas procedentes de los países en vías de desarrollo, los requisitos, los
montos de financiamiento, los plazos, así como las preferencias artísticas de cada fondo.
El Fondo de Cine del Sur de Noruega (SØRFOND) es un
fondo dirigido a producciones cinematográficas de los
países en desarrollo elegibles en la lista de la OCDE-DAC
y funcionando con cuatro millones de coronas (aproximadamente € 520.000) para el apoyo en 2012. Su objetivo es
promover la diversidad y la integridad artística en el plano cinematográfico a nivel internacional. El máximo de la
ayuda disponible para un proyecto es de 135.000 €, pero
entonces el 50% del total tiene que ser asegurado por
el solicitante con antelación. Se requiere que el proyecto
tenga un coproductor noruego confirmado en el momento
de la aplicación, y que “los foros de pitching pueden ayudar al proceso de búsqueda”.
Aide aux Cinémas du Monde (FRANCIA) del Centro nacional du Cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC) y su nuevo
sistema de financiación que fomenta la diversidad cultural
a través del apoyo de la cooperación entre los productores franceses y extranjeros. El fondo tiene dos bases separadas: una para los directores con una o dos películas,
y el otro para los directores con más experiencia. Según
sus necesidades, el director del proyecto con el apoyo
debe ser titular de nacionalidad extranjera y la lengua de
trabajo de la película debe ser la lengua oficial del lugar de
filmación o la lengua natal del director.

‘Meet the Funders’ presents the funding opportunities specialized in support of artists coming from developing countries to make clear the requirements, the funding amounts,
the deadlines and the artistic preferences as well.
The Norwegian South Film Fund (SØRFOND) is a fund targeting film productions from eligible developing countries
on the OECD DAC-list and running with NOK 4 million (approximately € 520.000) for support in 2012. They aim to
promote diversity and artistic integrity on the international
film scene. The maximum of the available support for one
project is €135.000 but then 50% of the total calculation
has to be secured by the applicant in advance. The project
is required to have a Norwegian co-producer confirmed at
the point of applying, but Bjerkem also mentioned that ‘pitch
forums can help the searching process’. In their case, the
upcoming deadline for application is February 15.
Aide aux Cinémas du Monde (FRANCE) and their new funding system, promote cultural diversity through the supporting of cooperation between French and foreign producers.
The fund has two separate basis: one for directors with one
or two films, the other for more experienced directors. According to their requirements, the director of the supported
project must be foreign nationality holder and the working
language of the film must be the official language of the
shooting place or the language of the director’s origin.

El Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato anuncia la
apertura de las nuevas instalaciones de RESIDENCIA
GIFF, una institución que tiene como misión ofrecer y recibir, durante todo el año a las iniciativas educativas de
GIFF, en un espacio permanente que da la bienvenida a
instructores de todo el mundo para actuar como mentores y fomentar el crecimiento de los jóvenes creadores;
dedicando un tiempo para la instrucción rigurosa en teoría
y técnica. Las sesiones de residencia se realizan en San
Miguel de Allende durante todo el año, donde los participantes podrán desarrollar sus proyectos en un espacio
diseñado para estimular la creación y el libre intercambio
de ideas.
Beginning in the Fall of 2013 there will be both Fall and
Spring sessions offered to both Mexican and international
filmmakers. There will also be scholarships available for outstanding Mexican students. The goal of all GIFF workshops
and educational initiatives is to give to young Mexican and
international filmmakers and producers attending the festival, an opportunity to meet with international film industry
professionals. The goal of these meetings is to better prepare and train young Mexican and international filmmakers
and producers by introducing them to key film industry professionals, who thereby impart their knowledge and experience, and can serve as potential future collaborators or
co-production partners; hopefully resulting in the financing,
completion and distribution of their feature film projects.

GIFF announces the opening of its new GIFF RESIDENCE,
an institution that will encompass and host all of GIFF’s year
round educational initiatives, creating a permanent space
that welcomes instructors from around the world to mentor
talent and encourage the growth of young creators; allowing
time for rigorous instruction in both theory and technique.
Study sessions will be realized in San Miguel de Allende
throughout the year, where the participants develop projects in a space designed to stimulate the creation and free
exchange of ideas.

Cinéfondation-La Residence y ofrece un espacio todos los laureados del
Cinéfondation-La Residence quienes desean seguir el desarrollo de sus proyectos en el GIFF Residencia. Según el proyecto, la residencia sería de 1-3
meses de duración en un periodo de primavera u otoño, para desarrollar sus
proyectos en guión, edición o post-producción, participando del programa
de invitados profesionales nacionales e internacionales que imparten conferencias o talleres durante el año como asesoría especializada y personalizada.
For the past six years GIFF has maintained a partnership with the Cinéfondation-La Residence and offers a space to all Cinéfondation-La Residence
Laureates who wish to further develop their projects at the GIFF Residency.
Depending on the project; the residency would be for 1-3 months of duration

El Medienboard Berlín-Brandemburg GmbH es una institución de fomento a
la cinematografía de la región de Berlín-Brandemburg, Alemania. Esta institución apoya proyectos cinematográficos en las categorías de: desarrollo de
guión, desarrollo de proyecto, realización de packaging, producción, distribución y ventas, y otras actividades que refuerzan la producción cinematográfica. Desde 1994, más de 2,850 proyectos fílmicos se han beneficiado
de una bolsa de 322 millones de euros. Por ahora se cuentan con acuerdos
para intercambios de residencia en Tel Aviv, Hong Kong y Mumbai. A partir
de septiembre, GIFF, MedienBoard y el Goethe Institute lanzan el nuevo programa “Guanajuato-Berlín 24/7”, una nueva iniciativa bilateral de residencias
artísticas para cineastas alemanes y mexicanos que les permite trabajar por

The Medienboard Berlín-Brandemburg GmbH is an institution of cinema promotion of the region of Berlin-Brandemburg, Germany. This institution supports film projects in the categories of: script development, project development, packaging, production, distribution and sales, and other activities that
strengthen the cinematographic production of that enclave. Since 1994 more
than 2,850 film projects have benefited from a stock of 322 million euros. It
currently features exchange programs with Tel Aviv, Hong Kong and Mumbai, and beginning in September of this year, with Guanajuato. GIFF, Medienboard and the Goethe Institute a proud to annouce “Guanajuato-Berlin

Every year Torino FilmLab, the leading institution in the international professional field, participates in the GIFF Industry area advising Mexican projects
for INCUBATOR and the International Pitching Market. In return GIFF selects
two projects from the Script and Pitch Program of the Torino Film Lab 2012
to be presented at our IPM. This year we have given this opportunity to two
projects: the Chilean No One’s Boy by Fernando Buzzoni and the project entitled The Dutch Woman by the Dutch producer Dean Gielis. RESIDENCE
GIFF is proud to announce that, in addition to this exchange, for 2014 Torino
FilmLab will hold its famous Framework Workshops in the facilities of the

El GIFF está buscando una colaboración permanente para que cada año la
RESIDENCIA GIFF sea la sede del programa Puentes: European and Latin
American Producers Workshop que va por su quinta edición, teniendo como
objetivo la colaboración de productores latinoamericanos y europeos.
This year during GIFF, EAVE will give a Pitching workshop and will provide
consulting and personalized support for all those selected for the IPM on
how to present and sell projects and seek funding.GIFF is seeking a permanent partnership with EAVE so that each year the GIFF RESIDENCE is
the venue for the Bridges program: European and Latin American Producers
Workshop, now in its fifth edition, with the goal of establishing collaboration
between Latin American and European producers.
Paris Project, Francia
La asociación con el Paris Project, consiste en la selección de un proyecto
mexicano participante al IPM para presentarse en el mercado de coproducción París Project del siguiente año. El proyecto elegido fue Las Dos Fridas
de Alejandra Cárdenas de Sinsentido Films. Este año el GIFF seleccionó el
proyecto brasileño The city where I’m getting old de Maria Rocha y Luana
Melgaco.
The partnership with Paris Project consists of the selection of a Mexican
project participating in the 2012 IPM to be presented at the Paris Project
co-production market in June of 2013. The project chosen is The Two Fridas
by Alejandra Cardenas of Nonsense Films. In exchange, GIFF will present a
project selected by Paris Project during the 2013 IPM, ‘The city where I’m
getting old’ by Maria Rocha y Luana Melgaco from Brazil.

Como parte de nuestra colaboración con el Festival de Cine de Rotterdam,
el GIFF selecciona a dos productores mexicanos que participen en nuestro

As part of our collaboration with the Rotterdam Film Festival, GIFF selects two
Mexican producers who participate in our International Pitching Market, to
go to the prestigious Rotterdam Lab workshop in Holland where they receive
counseling on international co-production, festivals and markets, development of professional networking, to enhance the success of his film projects.
In 2013 the producers were chosen by a committee of the IFFR and GIFF to
participate in the Rotterdam Lab 2013. In 2013 a joint committee from IFFR
and GIFF selected Ruby Castle’s project ‘Los Insólitos Peces Gato’ and April
Shannon’s project ‘Noche de Franco’. As part of our agreement, GIFF will
select two projects from Cinemart 2013 to seek investment opportunities in
our IPM. Those selected this year are Argentine project ‘Zama’ from Lucrecia
Martel and ‘Extraño pero verdadero’ from Mexican Michel Lipckes.

El taller PRODUIRE AU SUD tiene como propósito familiarizar a productores y directores originarios del sur con varias herramientas importantes y
técnicas de coproducción internacional a través de entrenamiento individual
para proyectos en desarrollo. Este año Produire au Sud esta presente en el
Pitching Market e Incubadora para seleccionar un proyecto mexicano a presentarse en el taller de Nantes. Se estan desarrollando convenios para realizar
anualmente este taller en la RESIDENCIA GIFF.
The workshop PRODUIRE AU SUD is intended to familiarize producers and
directors from the south with several important tools and techniques of international coproduction through individual training for projects in development. This year Produire au Sud will be listening projects at the Pitching Market and Incubadora to select one Mexican Project for the November Nantes’
workshop. This workshop will be organized anually in San Miguel as part of
The RESIDENCE Program.

to those occurring in the one-year program of VFS. Every, VFS, offers a one
year scolarship to a mexican to study in Vancouver.

Con el fin de estimular la creación de guiones que fortalezcan la
Industria Cinematográfica Nacional, el Gobierno del Estado de Guanajuato, la Fundación Expresión en Corto, la Sociedad Mexicana de
Directores y Realizadores de obras audiovisuales, el Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía y la Academia Mexicana de Ciencias y Artes Cinematográficas, presentan anualmente el Concurso Nacional
de Guión Cinematográfico, siendo el de mayor convocatoria en el
país tanto en corto como en largometraje. Este año se recibieron 102
guiones de largometraje y 180 guiones de cortometraje.
With the goal of stimulating the creation of screenplays which contribute to the strengthening of the national film industry, the State
Government of Guanajuato, the Expresión en Corto Foundation, the
Mexican Association of Directors, the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE) and Mexican Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences present the annual National Screenwriting Contest
for short and feature films. This year 102 feature and 180 short film
scripts were received.
La producción cinematográfica de largo y cortometraje
mexicano sigue progresando a la par del crecimiento y expansión del Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato. El
GIFF ha pasado de ser una expresión en corto, a ser la
comunicación global del audiovisual en unos cuantos años.
Mexican feature and short film production continues progressing with the expansion and growth of the Guanajauato
International Film Festival. In just a few years the festival has
transformed itself from an Expresión en Corto (short expression) to a global communication of the audiovisual.
El incremento inusual de la producción fílmica nacional fue
propiciado, además del desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías,
por políticas públicas federales y estatales, que impulsadas
desde la comunidad fílmica y escuchadas por autoridades
del ramo, han logrado en los dos últimos años elevar la
producción de largos superando las 110 películas anuales,
cifra que solo habíamos alcanzado en la época de oro del
cine mexicano.
The unusual growth in national film production has been aided in part by the rapid development of new technologies, but
it is also due to the federal and state politics that supported
by the local film community as well as by local film authorities
have in the last two years managed to elevate national feature
film production to surpass 110 films per year, a number only
previously reached during the golden age of Mexican cinema.
Las historias que se filmaron surgieron desde todos los
rincones de nuestro país y nos hablan de la necesidad de
expresión audiovisual de los mexicanos. Para filmar cien se
deben escribir muchos guiones. Conocido es que no todos
aquellos que se escriben, se filman. En EUA lo logra uno de
cada veinte en promedio y en el mejor de los casos uno de
diez. En México la proporción es uno de cinco.
¿Cómo poner a escribir a nuestros guionistas con tan pocos apoyos federales y estatales? ¿Cómo impulsarlos, si
los productores del siglo XXI no desarrollan ideas o proyectos y andan buscando obras terminadas para presentarlas
a los diversos fondos?

¿Cómo? Si las instituciones especializadas como son las
Sociedades de Gestión de la escritura fílmica han dejado
de impulsar la obra de sus agremiados presentes y futuros.
Lejano se ven los días cuando los Sindicatos de cine y las
Sociedades de Autor fundaron un banco de guiones que
entre otros frutos propicio el nacimiento de Rojo Amanecer,
película que obtuvo mil millones de pesos de Film Rental y
que su creación fue posible gracias a una beca.
Mientras se cierran oportunidades en muchos lados, el
GIFF se mantiene, y como todos los años lanzó su convocatoria de guión. Más de 280 guionistas buscan obtener
el premio que les permita obtener un modesto estímulo en
efectivo, pero en realidad aspiran al lauro que les dé posibilidad de iniciar el difícil camino para convertirse en película.
Mientras exista este premio la Sociedad Mexicana de Directores Realizadores de Obras Audiovisuales, S.G.C., lo
apoyará, esperando que los ganadores vean prontamente
su sueño escrito, convertido en películas y estás sean estrenadas en las salas de cine de nuestro país.
Our screen stories originate from every corner of the country
and they speak of a necessity for Mexican filmmakers to express themselves through audiovisual media. To film a hundred, more than a hundred screenplays must be written. It is a
known fact not all screenplays make it to the screen. In the US
an average of one out of every 20 makes it and best case scenario it’s one out of ten. In Mexico the average is one out of five.
How do we get our writers to write with such limited state
and federal support? How do we push them forward when
21st century producers no longer develop ideas but instead
look for finished works to present to funders? How? If specialized institutions such as the national Writer’s Guilds have
stopped supporting the work of their guild members past
and future. Far seem the days when the Syndicates and Author Societies put together a script bank that amongst other
achievements led to the birth of ‘Rojo Amanecer’, a film that
obtained a thousand million pesos through Film Rental and
that its creation was made possible through a grant.
While opportunities disappear everywhere fortunately GIFF
stands strong, and every year we launch a National Screenwriting Contest. More than 280 screenwriters seek this award
which will grant them a small cash price, but what they really seek is the recognition, one that can perhaps guide them
through the difficult path to see their stories on the screen.
As long as the award exists it will have the full support of
the Sociedad Mexicana de Directores Realizadores de Obras Audiovisuales, S.G.C (Mexican Director’s Association)
always hoping the winners go on to find success and see
their written dreams transformed into films and that these
are released on our country’s screens.
