Getting Ready for Lent
Dear Friends,
prolonged, more assiduous, more able to take on the needs of the brethren;
intercessory prayer, to intercede before God for the many situations of poverty
and suffering.” – Homily, 3/5/14
Last year, Kevin Cotter, the curriculum director for the
Fellowship of Catholic University Students, collated some
tips from Pope Francis in preparation for Lent. I found it
during prayer last week. With gratitude to Kevin, I share
the Pope’s Lenten tips with you, as we prepare ourselves.
7. Fasting
“We must be careful not to practice a formal fast, or one which in
truth ‘satisfies’ us because it makes us feel good about ourselves.
Fasting makes sense if it questions our security, and if it also leads to some benefit
for others, if it helps us to cultivate the style of the Good Samaritan, who bends
down to his brother in need and takes care of him.” – Homily, 3/5/14
WHAT SHOULD I DO FOR LENT?
1. Get rid of the lazy addiction to evil
“[Lent] is a ‘powerful’ season, a turning point that can foster change and conversion
in each of us. We all need to improve, to change for the better. Lent helps us
and thus we leave behind old habits and the lazy addiction to the evil
that deceives and ensnares us.” – General Audience, 3/5/14
8. Almsgiving
“Today gratuitousness is often not part of daily life where everything is bought and
sold. Everything is calculated and measured. Almsgiving helps us to experience
giving freely, which leads to freedom from the obsession of possessing, from the
fear of losing what we have, from the sadness of one who does not wish to share
his wealth with others.” – Homily, March 5, 2014
2. Do something that hurts
“Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we
can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not
forget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this dimension of
penance. I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt.” –
Lenten Message, 2014
9. Help the Poor
“In the poor and outcast we see Christ’s face; by loving and helping the poor, we
love and serve Christ. Our efforts are also directed to ending violations of human
dignity, discrimination and abuse in the world, for these are so often the cause
of destitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they take priority
over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need
to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing.” – Lenten
Message, 2014
3. Don’t remain indifferent
“Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for
us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the
prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience. God is not indifferent to our
world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation.” –Lenten Message,
2015
10. Evangelize
“The Lord asks us to be joyous heralds of this message of mercy and hope! It is
thrilling to experience the joy of spreading this good news, sharing the treasure
entrusted to us, consoling broken hearts and offering hope to our brothers and
sisters experiencing darkness.” – Lenten Message, 2014
4. Pray: Make our hearts like yours!
“During this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask the Lord: ‘Fac cor
nostrum secundum cor tuum’: Make our hearts like yours (Litany of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus). In this way we will receive a heart which is firm and merciful,
attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the
globalization of indifference.” – Lenten Message, 2015
You probably won’t be able to take huge steps forward in all of these areas.
Instead, pick a couple that stand out to you and try to find practical ways to grow
in your love of God and your love of your neighbor.
5. Take part in the sacraments

6. Prayer
P.S. We made the goal! I thank all of you who dug deep and helped us find a way
to surpass our goal of $910,000 in last year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. With the
match, we are now free of all capital debt. Amazing!

them. We walk in the footsteps of Jesus when
we are a source of solace and hope for suffering
people, no matter the kind of suffering they
experience. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord

consolation, who consoles us in all our affliction, so that
we may be able to console those who are in any affliction.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS/SOUP WITH SUBSTANCE
Please join us at 7pm each Friday in Lent (except February 19th) for
Bilingual Stations of the Cross followed by Soup with Substance. Soup with
Substance is an opportunity to come together for a night of prayer and
fellowship and enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread with our community
in the Parish Hall. The “Substance” is the special guest speaker that we have
at each of these events who speaks to our community about different topics
relating to one common theme: the different ways that we can use this time
during Lent to grow closer to God and closer to each other.
Ash Wednesday
Our substance on February 12th will be provided by the Marilu Gonzalez
of Catholic Charities. The theme for this first weekend is “The Corporal
Works of Mercy.” This presentation will be bilingual. All are Welcome!

Our bilingual reconciliation service will be held on Thursday, February
18th at 7pm. Lent is the perfect time to examine our consciences and
receive the Sacrament of Penance in preparation to celebrate the joy of
the Easter season.

Mercy is said to be a virtue influencing one’s ability to have compassion
for, and, if possible, to alleviate another’s misfortune.The Catholic Church
has traditionally encouraged her children to understand the practice of
merciful love by dividing the works of mercy into two kinds: corporal
(that is, bodily) and spiritual. One person who taught this way of life
clearly, and who manifested it so beautifully in her apostolate, was Blessed
Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

What we see in the life of Mother Teresa is a shining example of a life
dedicated especially to practicing the corporal works of mercy: (1) Feed
the hungry. (2) Give drink to the thirsty. (3) Clothe the naked. (4) Shelter
the homeless. (5) Visit those in prison. (6) Comfort the sick. (7) Bury the
dead.

Perhaps your first reaction upon reading this traditional list might be, that
they are severely outdated but don’t be too hasty. It may be more helpful
than you think in challenging us to discern new ways that our merciful
Savior is calling us to follow Him. In the practice of each of the corporal
works of mercy there is both a personal and a wider social dimension,
and a true disciple of Jesus Christ will not want to neglect either one.
Accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior means accepting each other with
compassion and merciful love.
Lenten Practices
Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old
and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is
to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of
age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full
meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength
according to one‘s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not
permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed
for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.
Solidarity Action: Join us at our first Soup with Substance - Friday,
February 12th - as Marilu Gonzalez speaks more on these Corporal Works
of Mercy and how Catholic Charities (with your help) can share these
works with the people of Chicago.

El año pasado, Kevin Cotter, el Director del Programa de Becas
Para Estudiantes de Universidades Católicas, recopiló algunos
consejos del Papa Francisco en preparación para la Cuaresma. Lo
encontré mientras oraba la semana pasada. Con agradecimiento
a Kevin, comparto estos mensajes de Cuaresma del Papa con
ustedes, mientras nos preparamos.
7. Ayuno
“Debemos estar atentos a no practicar un ayuno formal, o que en verdad nos
“sacia” porque nos hace sentir satisfechos. El ayuno tiene sentido si verdaderamente
menoscaba nuestra seguridad, e incluso si de ello se deriva un beneficio para los demás,
si nos ayuda a cultivar el estilo del Buen Samaritano, que se inclina sobre el hermano en
dificultad y se ocupa de él.” - Homilía , 03/05/14

“Hoy, a menudo, la gratuidad no forma parte de la vida cotidiana, donde todo se vende y se
compra.Todo es cálculo y medida. La limosna nos ayuda a vivir la gratuidad del don, que es
libertad de la obsesión del poseer, del miedo a perder lo que se tiene, de la tristeza de quien

lo que podemos dar con el fin de ayudar y enriquecer a los demás por nuestra propia
pobreza. No olvidemos que la verdadera pobreza duele: no auto-negación es real, sin esta
dimensión de la penitencia. Desconfío de una caridad que no cuesta nada y no

“En los pobres y en los últimos vemos el rostro de Cristo; amando y ayudando a los pobres
amamos y servimos a Cristo. Nuestros esfuerzos se orientan asimismo a encontrar el modo
de que cesen en el mundo las violaciones de la dignidad humana, las discriminaciones y
los abusos, que, en tantos casos, son el origen de la miseria. Cuando el poder, el lujo y el
dinero se convierten en ídolos, se anteponen a la exigencia de una distribución justa de las
riquezas. Por tanto, es necesario que las conciencias se conviertan a la justicia,
a la igualdad, a la sobriedad y al compartir.” - Mensaje de Cuaresma de 2014
3. No permanecer indiferente
La indiferencia hacia el prójimo y hacia Dios es una tentación real también para los
cristianos. Por eso, necesitamos oír en cada Cuaresma el grito de los profetas que levantan
su voz y nos despiertan. Dios no es indiferente al mundo, sino que lo ama hasta el punto de
dar a su Hijo por la salvación de cada hombre. Mensaje de Cuaresma 2015
10. Evangelizar
“¡El Señor nos invita a anunciar con gozo este mensaje de misericordia y de esperanza! Es
hermoso experimentar la alegría de extender esta buena nueva, de compartir el tesoro que
se nos ha confiado, para consolar los corazones afligidos y dar esperanza a tantos hermanos
y hermanas sumidos en el vacío.” - Mensaje de Cuaresma de 2014
4. Orar: ¡Haz nuestro corazón semejante al tuyo!
“Durante esta Cuaresma, queridos hermanos y hermanas, deseo orar con ustedes a Cristo
en esta Cuaresma: ‘Fac cor nostrum secundum Cor tuum’: Haz nuestro corazón semejante
al tuyo (Súplica de las Letanías al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús). De ese modo tendremos un
corazón fuerte y misericordioso, vigilante y generoso, que no se deje encerrar en sí mismo
y no caiga en el vértigo de la globalización de la indiferencia.” - Mensaje de Cuaresma de
2015
Probablemente no serán capaces de hacer estos cambios en todas estas áreas. Pero a
cambio, elijan una pareja que se destacan entre ustedes y traten de encontrar formas
prácticas para crecer en el amor de Dios y en el amor por su prójimo.

como Él. Esto sucede cuando recibimos la Eucaristía, donde nos convertimos en lo que

P.D. ¡Logramos nuestra meta! Doy profundas gracias a todos los que donaron y nos
ayudaron a encontrar una manera de superar nuestra meta de $910,000 en la Campaña
Católica Anual del año pasado. Con la suma igualada, ahora estamos libres de la deuda de
capital. ¡Impresionante!
6. Oración
“En la debilidad y en la fragilidad de nuestra vida, podemos dirigirnos a Dios con confianza
de hijos y entrar en comunión con Él. Ante tantas heridas que nos hacen daño y que nos
podrían endurecer el corazón, estamos llamados a sumergirnos en el mar de la oración,
que es el mar inmenso de Dios, para gustar su ternura. La Cuaresma es tiempo de oración,

La misericordia crea lazos con las dificultades de
los demás. La misericordia buscará maneras de
reconfortarlos. Nosotros seguimos los pasos de
Jesús cuando somos una fuente de consuelo y
esperanza para los que sufren, sin importar el tipo
de sufrimiento que experimenten. Bendito sea Dios, Padre
de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Padre compasivo y Dios de
todo consuelo, que nos consuela en cualquier tribulación,
para que nosotros, podamos consolar a los que pasan
cualquier tribulación (2 Corintios 1:3–4).
VIACRUCIS/SOPA CON SUBSTANCIA
Por favor, únase a nosotros a las 7 pm todos los viernes de Cuaresma
(excepto el 19 de febrero) para el Viacrucis bilingüe, seguido por Sopa con
Substancia. La Sopa con Substancia es una oportunidad de reunirse para una
noche de rezo y comunión y disfrutar de una comida sencilla de sopa y pan
con nuestra comunidad en el Salón Parroquial. La “Substancia” es el invitado
especial que tenemos en cada uno de estos eventos que hablará a nuestra
comunidad acerca de diferentes temas relacionados con un tema en común:
las diferentes formas que podemos utilizar este tiempo de Cuaresma para
acercarnos a Dios.

SERVICIO DE ORACIÓN TAIZÉ
Únase a nosotros para el canto y oración en nuestro servicio de Cuaresma
Taizé el viernes 19 de febrero a las 7 pm.
Se dice que la misericordia es una virtud que influye en la capacidad para
tener compasión y, si es posible, para aliviar la desgracia ajena. La Iglesia
Católica tradicionalmente ha animado a sus hijos a entender la práctica del
amor misericordioso dividiendo las obras de misericordia en dos clases:
corporales (cuerpo) y espirituales. Una persona que enseñó claramente esta
forma de vida, y que lo manifestó maravillosamente en su apostolado, fue la
Madre Teresa de Calcuta.

Lo que vemos en la vida de la Madre Teresa es un ejemplo sorprendente
de una vida dedicada especialmente a practicar las obras de misericordia
corporales: (1) alimentar a los hambrientos. (2) Dar de beber a los sedientos.
(3) vestir a los desnudos. (4) Refugiar a las personas sin hogar. (5) visitar a los
presos. (6) Consolar a los enfermos. (7) Enterrar a los muertos.

MESA DE SAN JOSÉ
El sábado, 19 de marzo inmediatamente después de la Misa de 5pm
Quizás la primera reacción de usted al leer esta lista tradicional podría ser,
que es muy anticuada, pero no hay que apresurarse. Puede ser más útil de
lo que pensamos, desafiándonos a discernir nuevas formas, que nuestro
misericordioso Salvador nos está llamando a seguir. En la práctica de cada
una de las obras de misericordia corporales hay ambas, una amplia dimensión
social y personal, y un verdadero discípulo de Jesucristo que no se descuidan
ninguno de los dos. Aceptar a Jesús como nuestro Señor y Salvador significa
aceptar a los demás con compasión y amor misericordioso.
Regulaciones de Cuaresma
Abstinencia: Todos los católicos mayores de 14 años, deben abstenerse de
comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los viernes de Cuaresma. El
Ayuno debe ser observado el Miércoles de Ceniza por todos los católicos que
han-cumplido los dieciocho (18) años pero no han llegado a los cincuenta y
nueve (59). Estas personas sólo pueden hacer una comida completa, y dos
comidas pequeñas si son necesarias para mantener las fuerzas, de acuerdo
a las necesidades individuales, pero no se permite alimento sólido entre las
comidas. El ayuno así como la abstinencia Pascual especial obliga el Viernes
Santo y es recomendada en el Sábado Santo también.

estas obras de misericordia corporales y como Caridades Católicas (y con su

for the sacraments of
Confirmation and Eucharist. Bob had already been baptized in
another Christian faith.

Originally from Old Lyme, CT, Bob moved to Chicago for work
after attending college in New Orleans. He says he was drawn to
Chicago because of the opportunities available in a large city and
the friendly Midwesterners he met while at school. But he admits
that he remains a die-hard New England Patriots fan!
Bob and Allison settled in Logan Square in the fall of 2013 and
began searching for churches. “We were hooked on SJB when, on
our walk to mass one snowy Sunday morning, we saw a family on
their way to church--the husband and wife towing their children
down the sidewalk in sleds,” Bob said. “We immediately realized
that this was the jovial, family-oriented community we were
searching for.” They usually attend the 9:45 a.m. mass.

Bob’s favorite part of RCIA was the Rite of Acceptance and
Welcoming in January. “So many people came up to me after mass,
during the spaghetti dinner, and welcomed me into the community
because they saw me during mass. It was very heart-warming.”
