VACACIONES EN FAMILIA Family holidays WHEN TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN, PLANNING THE TRIP AND CHOOSING APPROPRIATE ACCOMMODATION BECOME KEY ASPECTS. Texto: Ignasi Gaya supone enfrentarse a nuevas sensaciones, conocer lugares y personas diferentes… Viajar ES CONVENIENTE IMPLICAR AL NIÑO EN LA ORGANIZACIÓN Y PREPARATIVOS DEL VIAJE. implies confronting new sensations, discovering different places and people… An entire universe of possibilities for children, who can find very enriching experiences in these situations. And not only between three and five years of age, when youngsters are spending the first holidays that will remain consciously with them in memory. For babies too, it is an excellent idea to explore new places, with different sounds and colours as, according to Claire and Lucille Tristram in their book 'De viaje con niños' (Travelling with kids), 'new-born babies are capable of expressing preferences and creating memories from their experiences. And the richer these are, the wider their mental landscape'. Travelling IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO INVOLVE CHILDREN IN THE PREPARATION OF THE TRIP. Nonetheless, moving around with children is never easy (journeys with car-sick children in the back, tantrums in restaurants, ...). Before you get too desperate, just remember that the change of pace associated with holidays and in particular with trips means a real revolution for the kids and getting these days to be a truly relaxing time for the whole family depends to a large extent on us. De hecho, los expertos aconsejan One of the strategies to achieve this is to plan the trip in advance. And although the baby of the family should not be the sole centre of attention when it comes to choosing a destination or a type of activity, it would be a mistake to ignore the child's age or requirements. Los más pequeños necesitan unos ritmos definidos de sueño, comida, juego... y, aunque no tengan por qué ser iguales a los del resto del año, es importante que no varíen de la noche a la mañana y que no se modifiquen todos los días. experts advise that older children should be involved in the organization and preparation of the holidays by showing them videos of several potential destinations so that they can give an opinion, by asking them to help to pack and by letting them choose themselves the games, books or music they want to take with them for entertainment. Just as important as good planning, however, is accepting that unforeseen circumstances will almost always force us to change our plans, especially when travelling with small children. In this sense, Claire and Lucille Tristram recommend that for this kind of holiday it's a good idea to avoid places where tickets need to be booked in advance, for instance. In any case, planning is essential to prevent the inevitable disruption of a baby's timetable from turning into a totally disorganized routine. Small children need to have clearly marked periods of sleep, eating time, play time... and although they don't have to be the same as the rest of the year, it is important for these timetables not to change overnight, just like that, and also for the routine not to be changing every day. Satisfying the children's needs is simpler if a number of practical points are taken into account, such as the choice of appropriate accommodation. If you decide on a hotel, it is a good idea to find out first if it has open-air areas and children's menus or if it organizes activities for children. In addition, whether in such an establishment or in a rented apartment or rural cottage, it is important to have two adjoining rooms: that way the parents will have somewhere to read, watch television or sit and chat once the children have gone to sleep. And one last trick to make sure young ones note the change of habits less and adapt more easily to the new setting is to pack at least one familiar object (a favourite toy, a special blanket...). Llevar protege enchufes o In addition, no matter where we are going, we mustn't forget about safety. EN EL COCHE DE PAPÁ… IN DADDY’S CAR… Nerves, tears, luggage overflowing from the boot... When travelling by car, managing to make an early start without headaches is quite a feat. So, the best thing to do is take things calmly and bear in mind several points that will make the journey safer and comfortable. •It is best to travel during daylight (leaving first thing in the morning). In this way we will reach the hotel just in time to check-in and the children won't have to sleep in awkward positions. •It’s necessary to stop for a rest for 20 minutes every two hours. Trying to go the whole road ‘non-stop’ leads to accidents. •Young children must always travel in seats suitable for their weight and age. We must not be confused by the fact that Spanish legislation only obliges the use of special children's seats for passengers under 12 when they are in the front seat (in the rear, special seats are optional): a survey by the Directorate General for Traffic states that if everyone used special seats for young passengers, the death rate among children in road accidents would be cut by 75%. •The safest place to put a child's seat is in the middle at the back of the car or the place directly behind the driver´s seat. Just in case, a first-aid kit should never be forgotten, even with just a few basic items (sun cream, an antipyretic, a thermometer…). Finally, another fundamental point is to take with you all necessary documentation (ID card or passport, depending on the destination) and to have insurance for medical assistance. In Spain, it is important not to forget the parents’ Social Security cards and, if travelling abroad, it is a good idea to request the forms provided by the S.S. for assistance abroad (Spain has bilateral agreements in place with some countries for mutual health cover). A private insurance might be a good idea too, although it is advisable to read the small print before signing to make sure what it really covers.
