St. Dominic Catholic Church Houston, TX SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 6, 2015 Dear Friends in St. Dominic. Queridos amigos en San Dominic, This week, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary (December 8th). A Holy day of obligation! The Immaculate Conception refers to the condition that the Blessed Virgin Mary was free from Original Sin from the very moment of her conception in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne. The Blessed Virgin’s freedom from sin was an unmerited gift of God or special grace, and an exception to the law, or privilege, which no other created person has received. On December 12th , we shall celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas and of the Philippines. Up to this day, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the humble servant of God continues to spread heavenly things by doing good works in the world. For us as followers of her Son, Jesus, we can remain favored ones of God by putting into practice His word in our daily living. The message of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Diego is so consoling to us and encouraging. It is because she says to him, and also to us : I am your merciful mother, the Mother of all….those who love me, of those who cry to me, of those who have confidence in me….Do not be troubled or weighed down with grief. Do not fear any illness, anxiety or pain. Am I not here who am your mother? With this message what are we afraid of? Mary is the highly favored woman of God. Her fiat is our excellent model. Her life is an example on how to remain favored with God. In this sense, through our baptism we are favored with God. We become God’s children and created in His image and likeness. We are now on the second Sunday of Advent and we are told of the Joy of Salvation. We think about the signs – bewilderment and fear throughout the world, and in the poetic language of the Prophet we are comforted – calmed – and we see the love of God – God remembering His people. Take off your dress of sorrow and distress – wrap the cloak of integrity of God around you – put on the Glory of God. We are offered peace through integrity, and honor through devotedness. Nothing for nothing! The Joy of Salvation is near – but we have to play our part in order to make it happen. The Advent Season invites us to self-examination leading to self-reform. God’s kingdom is a rule over man’s hearts and to belong to it means a change of heart manifested in a change for the better. Advent is a challenge to repentance. It is a challenge to do something for God. True repentance is: A turning away from sin and turning towards God. How to do it? Practice it minute -by-minute, hour-by-hour, day-by-day. Practice the beautiful, loving, caring person God made you to be. You can be sure that the “morally crooked ways” in you will be straightened and the “rough edges” of your character will be smoothened. Sincerely yours in Christ Rev. Throw off strife, he tells us, and put on joy. Like a favorite old sweatshirt, joy fits, and how warm it keeps us, even when the winds blow cold. T Paul knows of this joy as he pens his letter to the Philippians, praying that they may grow in their ability to discern what is righteous and good. And Luke speaks to us of John, who was foretold by Isaiah and who sings a similar song—“Prepare the way of the Lord,” for salvation is at hand. A man ahead of his time, Baruch spent his days joyfully awaiting a distant glory. On this Second Sunday of Advent, Paul and John know that this glory is upon us. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION y now, trees are beginning to appear in living rooms throughout the parish. To a complete outsider to our culture, it must seem an odd thing indeed. The “roots” of this custom are in liturgical drama: religious plays performed in the churches and town squares of medieval Europe. The favorite theme for this time of year was the “Paradise Play,” a dramatic history of the human race from the Garden of Eden to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The language and music varied from place to place, but one feature was always in place: a great tree decorated with apples. As a prop, it provided lots of material for the actors: the temptation, shelter for the manger, and a reminder of the wood of the cross. Soon people began to bring “paradise trees” into their homes, decorating them with gifts and lighted candles. B Many Germans give credit to Martin Luther for transforming the “Paradise Tree” into the evergreen Christmas tree. Walking home on a starry Advent night, he was so awed by the beauty of the night that he hauled a pine tree inside and decorated it with lighted candles. Americans were holdouts. It took until 1856 for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to decriminalize Christmas decorations, the old Puritan dislikes falling before the waves of Irish and German immigrants with traditions firmly in hand!
