Teacher Spotlight
Developing writing skills is critical for high school and college/
career success. One important stop along the way is the
Writing class taught by Mr. Seegars at WJHS&A. Students
spend one quarter each school year learning to plan/revise/edit
a variety of works, including creative poetry, narrative, and expository writing.
With 14 years of teaching experience across all subject areas, Mr. Seegars has helped
develop two new events for students in 2013—the Talent Show and Halloween Party.
“I believe social education is a big part of learning. School should be a safe haven
where students display all their talents,” shared Seegars. Last spring’s Talent Show
featured an array of student singers, poets, dancers, and musicians to the roaring
applause by peers and teachers alike.
To Mr. Seegars, our school’s greatest strength lies in its diversity. “WJHS&A is a
microcosm of the larger society. By having all these different ethnicities and social
classes, we prepare our students to deal with all walks of life,” he explained.
His advice for life success? Be bold enough to ask questions and daring enough
to seek the answers. Thank you, Mr. Seegars. Welcome to your second year!
Study Skills for Middle School Students
Parents, one of the best things that you can do for your child is provide them with the
study skills now that they will need both in middle school and in the future.
To help you accomplish this goal, here are some helpful tips:
-Help your child get organized. Getting and staying organized is crucial for
success both in school and beyond. This includes using a planner daily, keeping track of
important papers, and being on top of long term deadlines.
-Provide a space to study. This does not have to be a desk or anything fancy.
Just a quiet space with enough room to spread out and have materials on hand.
-Reiterate the importance of studying a little bit each night – not simply the
night before an exam. Students should be re-reading and reviewing material daily,
practice challenging math problems in order to think deeper, and anticipating what
information might be on essay questions by writing about what they are reading.
-Reflect on works. Periodically check in with your child to see how he or she is
doing and what strategies may or may not be working.
-Help your child de-stress. Remember that students have stress in their lives,
just as adults do. Be sure to keep lines of communication open and talk with your child.

Técnicas de estudio para estudiantes de secundaria
Padres, una de las mejores cosas que usted puede hacer por su hijo es proporcionarles las
habilidades de estudio, las cuales van a necesitar, tanto en secundaria como en el futuro .
Para ayudar a lograr esta meta, he aquí algunos consejos útiles:
- Ayude a su hijo a organizarse . Obtener y mantenerse organizado es crucial para el éxito
tanto en la escuela como en el futuro. Esto incluye el uso de una agenda diaria, mantener los
documentos importantes organizados y estar en cima de los plazos.
- Brindar un espacio para estudiar. Esto no tiene por qué ser un escritorio o nada lujoso. Un
espacio tranquilo, con suficiente espacio para moverse y tener los materiales a la mano.
- Reiterar la importancia de estudiar un poco cada noche - no sólo la noche antes de un
