Helping your child learn self-regulation: These skills are very important because self-regulation affects personal relationships, self-esteem and school success. Self regulation includes the skills of self-control, impulse control and self-management. Higher-level self regulation like controlling a temper tantrum starts with smaller steps. Over time, your child’s new skills build on each other. As a parent, you play a big part in helping your child learn these little steps. Here are some ways you can help: Set appropriate limits on impulsive behavior. Teach coping skills like taking a deep breath, holding a blanket to self-soothe and using words instead of fists. Teach games that encourage impulse control like Red Light/ Green Light and Mother May I? Help your child anticipate the consequences of his/her actions. Your child will be in his early twenties before the prefrontal cortex finishes changing/ developing. The prefrontal cortex plays a critical role in language, short-term memory, attention, and self-control. Book Suggestion: Written By: Margie Palatini Every October, schools and organizations across the country join STOMP Out Bullying in observing National Bullying Prevention Month. The goal is to encourage communities to work together to stop bullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children of all ages. Unity Day is October 19! Wear orange to be united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion. #AmphiUnited.
