Who we are
Quiénes somos
Alcobendas Teaching Centre is part of
the British Council, which is the United
Kingdom’s international organisation for
educational and cultural relations. Founded
in 1934, today we are a major international
organisation working in more than 100
countries, employing 7,900 staff, and
teaching English to 495,000 students. In
addition to being a world leader in English
language teaching, the British Council also
works to encourage cultural, scientific,
technological and educational exchanges.

Meet the Management team
message from the manager
Dear students and parents,
Thank you very much for choosing the Alcobendas Teaching
Centre as your place to study
English this year.
With over 950 students annually, the Alcobendas Teaching
Centre is a rather large centre in
the British Council’s network of
80 teaching centres around the
world. Our location on a main
street in Alcobendas is convenient while our intimate classrooms promote a positive and
engaging atmosphere throughout the centre.
The majority of you will have studied with us before so I
would like to thank you for your loyalty. You will have had
direct experience of the innovations we have applied to
the ways we keep in touch with you. For example, we are
very proud of our Portal, where a number of services are
available through the internet, including the opportunity
to consult student reports online. I encourage you to take
full advantage of this.
To all new students and their parents I also extend a very
warm welcome. After having attended some classes, I
hope you notice that we are serious about your progress
in English and that we provide you with the opportunity to
learn through engaging content and activities.
I hope you will appreciate that what we do here at
Alcobendas goes far beyond just learning the “rules” of
the language. Rules are not much use unless you can use
them and we focus our attention in class on the productive skills, on spoken and written communication. You
can expect to speak a lot in class, to the teacher and
your classmates. By the same token you can expect your

teacher to provide regular feedback on your speaking
and your written work to enable you to improve.
Our teaching and qualifications help people around the
world improve their education and career prospects. As
well as giving face-to-face classes in English, the British
Council’s Examinations Services also administers more
than two million exams, including our IELTS test, in more
than 100 countries every year. Many of you will have
heard of the First Certificate in English (FCE) and the
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) and passing these
exams may be your target. Teachers at Alcobendas are
experienced at preparing students for examinations.
At Alcobendas, we have also placed great emphasis on
the development of our teachers through our weekly
in-house training programme and by supporting our
teachers on the Trinity College London Diploma and
British Council/Trinity TYLEC (Teaching Young Learners
Extension Certificate) courses. Both the senior teacher
and I are tutors for these qualifications and each year our
teachers are regular participants on these courses.
This year we will also have fun language-rich competitions
for the young learners and a new pen pal programme
with students in Thailand, Oman and elsewhere. And, for
our adult students we have the free conversation club in
addition to normal classes.
It is very important to me to keep in touch with what you
think about our service and what you want from us. From
time to time we will invite groups of students and parents
to Focus Groups and we’ll ask you to fill in feedback questionnaires regularly.

Estimados Alumnos y padres de alumnos,
Gracias por escoger El Centro de Estudios de Alcobendas
como el centro donde estudiará inglés este año.
Con más de 950 estudiantes cada año, Alcobendas es
uno de los centros relevantes de la red del British Council
que cuenta con 80 centros a nivel mundial. Nos encontramos en una de las calles principales lo que hace que
el centro se encuentre muy bien comunicado, podrá
disponer de aulas que promueven y crean una atmosfera
acogedora.
La mayoría de ustedes ya habrán estudiado con nosotros
anteriormente, por lo que les agradezco su confianza.
Habrán podido observar las mejoras que hemos realizado en las diferentes vías de comunicación con ustedes.
Por ejemplo, estamos muy orgullosos de nuestro Portal,
donde se encuentran disponibles un gran número de servicios vía internet, incluso la posibilidad de consultar sus
calificaciones on-line. Les animo a aprovechar al máximo
este servicio.
A todos nuestros nuevos estudiantes y a sus padres,
les doy una cálida bienvenida. Una vez comenzadas las
clases, habrán podido comprobar que nos tomamos muy
en serio su evolución en el idioma (inglés) y que le daremos la oportunidad de aprender a través de diferentes
contenidos y actividades.
Me gustaría que tuvieran en cuenta que aquí, en
Alcobendas, vamos más allá del simple aprendizaje de
“las reglas” del idioma. Reglas que no son tan útiles si
no se utilizan correctamente en las clases, con técnicas
que resulten productivas en la comunicación hablada y
escrita. En nuestras clases tendrás que comunicarte en
su mayoría en inglés, ya sea con el profesor o con tus
compañeros, del mismo modo el profesor te proporcionará una evaluación regular de tu trabajo hablado y escrito
con la intención de hacerte mejorar.
Nuestro sistema de enseñanza y calificación ayuda a
mucha gente alrededor del mundo a mejorar su educación
y perspectivas de futuro. Además de clases presenciales,
el British Council Servicios de Exámenes también organiza más de dos millones de exámenes, incluyendo nuestro
examen IELTS, en más de 100 países cada año. Muchos
de ustedes habrán oído hablar sobre el First Certificate in
English (FCE) y el Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) y

lenguaje para los alumnos más jóvenes y un nuevo programa mediante el cual nuestros alumnos intercambiarán
cartas con estudiantes en Tailandia, Oman y otros lugares.
Para nuestros alumnos adultos disponemos del club de
conversación gratuito como complemento a las clases
habituales.
Es muy importante para mí conocer qué es lo que ustedes piensan de nuestro servicio y qué lo que esperan
de nosotros. En ocasiones realizamos grupos de opinión
e invitamos a padres/alumnos a que participen en ellos.

Hi, I’m Andy and I’ve been working here at British Council
Alcobendas since September 2011. I’ve got many
responsibilities that include looking after the welfare
of students, organising the professional development
of our teachers, and helping organise the academic
structure of our courses. But I love nothing more than
giving people advice on the best ways to learn English,

Hi, I’m Victoria and I’ve only been working in Alcobendas
for a short time, but I’ve worked in various other British
Council centres for four years. You can find me at
the reception desk. My main responsibilities are to

with any questions or concerns that you may have.

Normally students will pass to the next level at the end of a course unless
their marks from continuous assessment and/or formal exams indicate
they haven’t yet assimilated the language and met the course objectives.
In this case they will have to spend more time at the same level before
they are ready to progress further through the academic structure. At
the end of a course the teacher will make a recommendation for the
appropriate next course based on the ability and level of the students.
Learning a language is a long term objective, and each person develops
skills at a different pace. The next level recommendation tells us the best
place for the student to continue learning.
Cada uno de nuestros cursos representa
parte de un plan de estudios que ayudará
a Ud. o su hijo a dominar el inglés.
Normalmente los alumnos pasarán al siguiente nivel al término de
un curso a menos que sus notas de evaluación continua y de los
exámenes formales demuestren que no han asimilado el contenido y
alcanzado los objetivos del curso. En este caso tendrán que quedarse
en el mismo nivel hasta estar preparados para seguir avanzando
en la estructura académica. Al final de un curso el profesor hará
una recomendación de el siguiente nivel más apropiado para el
alumno según sus capacidades y nivel alcanzado. Aprender un
idioma es un objetivo a largo plazo y cada uno aprende a su ritmo.
La recomendación de siguiente nivel ubica al alumno en el nivel
adecuado para seguir el aprendizaje.

This is divided into four levels: Pink, Red, Yellow and
Purple depending on individual student ability and
age. Lots of importance is given to the stimulation of
the child’s oral and aural skills. A fundamental aim is to
develop a positive attitude towards English as something
enjoyable and we try to ensure that the children have
a good time in class. There is a gradual introduction of
more and more reading and writing.
This is divided into seven levels from elementary up
to level 6 (FCE). We emphasise oral communication
while students also continue to learn more grammar
and vocabulary and further develop the basic skills of
reading, writing, speaking and listening. Continuous
assessment tasks are integrated into normal lessons.
Students begin to reflect on their learning and take more
control of their learning process through engaging tasks
and teacher guidance.
There are eight senior levels from senior 2 up to senior 9.
Students continue to develop their listening, reading, writing
and speaking skills while also improving their accuracy in
pronunciation and grammar, and expanding their vocabulary.
Levels 6 and 8 are orientated at preparing students for the
internationally recognised Cambridge exams of FCE and
CAE, respectively. Learners are motivated through more
exposure to authentic materials, gaining more responsibility
for their own progress and having a greater awareness of the
relevance of English.
As with the other departments, the adult classes aim to develop
all the skills necessary to be able to understand and produce
written and spoken English, with a particular emphasis on oral
communication. Teachers create an open, positive classroom
environment to enable students to increase their confidence
using a range of stimulating, varied and up-to-date material.
Levels 6, 8 and 10 are orientated at preparing students for the
internationally recognised Cambridge exams of FCE, CAE and
CPE respectively. Adults can matriculate on a termly basis.

la comunicación oral aunque el estudiante continúa
aprendiendo gramática y vocabulario así como

de las lecciones se encuentran integradas tareas que

orientación de su profesor.
Disponemos de ocho niveles para senior, del senior 2
al senior 9. Los estudiantes continúan desarrollando sus

Como en los otros departamentos, las clases de adultos
tienen como objetivo el desarrollo de todas las destrezas
necesarias para poder comprender y producir inglés hablado
y escrito, pero se incide más en la comunicación oral. Los
profesores crean un ambiente abierto y positivo en clase para
que los alumnos puedan aumentar su confianza utilizando
una variedad de materiales estimulantes y actualizados.
Los niveles 6, 8 y 10 están orientados específicamente a
preparar a los alumnos para los exámenes de Cambridge
internacionalmente reconocidos de FCE, CAE y CPE,
respectivamente. Los adultos se matriculan trimestralmente.

Summer COURSE

British Council Alcobendas offers the chance to develop linguistic
skills and communicative abilities in a safe and structured
environment both during the academic year and in an intensive
course in July. The summer programme is designed with the
same academic structure as the October - June course but
concentrated in one month, meaning there is a noticeable
progression. The groups have a maximum of twelve students and
are formed taking their level and age into account. This summer
course is offered to senior students (14-17 years old).
British Council Alcobendas ofrece la oportunidad de desarrollar
las habilidades lingüísticas y la capacidad comunicativa en un
entorno seguro y estructurado tanto durante el año académico
como en un curso intensivo de verano. El programa está
diseñado con la misma estructura académica de nuestro curso
de octubre a junio pero concentrado en un mes, por lo que el
ritmo de aprendizaje es notable. Los grupos tienen un máximo
de doce alumnos por clase, y se forman teniendo en cuenta la
edad y el nivel de los alumnos. El curso de verano se ofrece a
los alumnos senior (de 14 a 17 años).
Due to the intensive nature of the course, the students have to
maintain a high level of commitment and work hard in class and
at home to maximise their progress, reach the course objectives
and advance. The cost of the course includes registration, course
book, workbook, other material and use of the library. Everyday
the students receive a sandwich and soft drink in the 20-minute
break.
Debido al carácter acelerado del curso, los alumnos deberán
implicarse y trabajar intensamente dentro y fuera de clase para
optimizar su progreso, alcanzar los objetivos del curso y avanzar .
El importe del curso incluye la matrícula, libro de texto, material

*Grammar and Vocabulary are evaluated through skills
assessments, and are taken into account for the overall mark,
along with attitude, homework and participation.
At the end of each term there is a day when parents have the
opportunity to come and speak with the teacher to discuss
their child’s progress. Adult students receive personalised
counselling with their teacher and a report at the end of
each term. Evaluation of students’ progress is made based
on continuous assessment.
Students need to have demonstrated satisfactory progress
and ability before they are ready to go into the next level. If
a student has not achieved an average of at least six they are
not ready to move onto the next level and will be advised to
repeat the level. While every effort is made to avoid students
repeating levels, at times it is in the best interest of the
students to do so.
Continuous assessment enables teachers to continuously
monitor student’s progress over the entire course. It involves
assessing their performance in everyday class activities. An
example of a continuous assessment listening task would
be for the teacher to set up the activity in the same way as
normal but assess and record how well they understood it
during the stages of the lesson. This method helps teachers
and students acknowledge their effort and progress every
day, instead of just one performance at the end of the term
or year.
It is important to note that, whilst the materials of senior 6, 8,
and 10 are specifically designed to allow lots of practice of
activities like those in the official tests, this is only an aspect
of the courses offered at these levels and students will focus
on improving their general English during the course.

Al término de cada trimestre, el centro habilita un
día a fin de que los padres tengan la oportunidad de
reunirse con el profesor para comentar el progreso
de su hijo/a. Los alumnos mayores de edad disfrutarán de una
sesión de asesoramiento personalizado con su profesor, así como
un informe al final de cada trimestre. La evaluación del progreso
del alumno se realiza en base a exámenes y/o evaluación continua.
Los alumnos deberán haber demostrado un progreso y habilidades
lingüísticas satisfactorios antes de poder pasar al siguiente nivel.
Si el alumno no ha conseguido una media de al menos seis, no
estará listo para cursar el siguiente nivel y se le recomendará
repetir el mismo nivel. Sin embargo, aunque el centro haga todo
lo posible para evitar que el alumno repita un nivel, hay casos en
los que volver a cursar el nivel otra vez va en beneficio del alumno.
La evaluación continua permite a los profesores valorar el progreso
del alumno a lo largo del curso de manera constante. Un ejemplo
de evaluación continua de la comprensión auditiva consistiría en
que el profesor planteara una actividad como de costumbre, pero
evaluando y apuntando lo bien que ha comprendido cada alumno
los materiales en cada fase de la clase. Este método permite
al profesor y a los alumnos valorar sus esfuerzos a diario, en lugar
de hacerlo en una única ocasión a final del trimestre o del curso.
No obstante, es importante indicar que, si bien los materiales de los cursos
senior 6, 8 y 10 están específicamente diseñados para que el alumno
tenga múltiples oportunidades para practicar actividades como las
incluidas en los exámenes oficiales, éstos no son el único contenido de los
cursos ofrecidos en dichos niveles, sino uno de ellos, y los estudiantes se
dedicarán, asimismo, a mejorar su nivel de inglés general durante el curso.

As the teachers have only five or ten minutes between classes to
prepare material and change rooms, it can be very difficult for them
to talk to you at these times. However, our teachers are very happy to
discuss your child’s progress at more suitable times and we invite you
to arrange a meeting by calling our customer services department on

There are a range of materials to suit any level and age
which you can use on site or take home. These include
graded readers, novels, non-fiction titles, magazines and
DVDs. We also have a number of resources to help you
with learning English such as language reference and
practice books, exam practice materials and dictionaries.
Our friendly librarian will be on hand to help you and is
always happy to recommend titles if you are not sure what
you are looking for.

Young Learners in our Primary and Junior departments

information about this will be given throughout the course.

In all British Council centres, health and safety are of the upmost importance. Every course we organise fire drills and inform our students
about the evacuation routes in case of emergency. There is a poster in every classroom with the evacuation route clearly highlighted.

We would be grateful if new students (parents of new students) could inform Nazaret of any specific health issues by filling out
our optional medical information form. The management and customer service teams can help students feeling unwell.

No. Students who have demonstrated at the end of the course that they have developed the necessary skills to understand and
communicate effectively at that level will be ready to go on to the following level. Continuous assessment and exam marks give us a clear
picture of a student´s ability. However, It is important that an all round ability be reached to ensure future successful learning.

All young learners should bring a signed note from a parent. They should show this to the teacher and client services who will stamp it.
Without this stamp the security guards will not allow a young learner student to leave the premises.

If a student is finding a class too easy or difficult, the first person to talk to is the teacher. They will be able to offer advice and
decide if the student should see the senior teacher who will check whether the student is in the right level. If a student has
attended a course of about 100 hours outside the British Council or abroad and feels they have advanced significantly, they can
request a level test to see if they have reached a sufficient level to go into the next course, providing the relevant documentation.

At the British Council we do everything possible to ensure that classes always have the same teacher. If for some reason this is
not possible, we try to make sure that classes have the same substitute teacher. Although we do all we can to ensure consistency
in the substitution of classes, sometimes circumstances beyond our control, e.g. illness, make this impossible.

Groups are formed based on levels assigned either following level tests or the recommendation of the teacher of the previous course.
We also try to make sure that young learners in a class are of as similar an age as possible. We cannot comply with requests to ensure
that students are placed with their friends in certain groups due to both the size of the centre and our belief that meeting new students
forms an important part of personal development and maturity.

Students follow courses of preparation for Cambridge exams in the following levels:
Level 6 – Preparation for the First Certificate in English (FCE)
Level 8 – Preparation for the Cambridge Advanced in English (CAE)
Level 10 – Preparation for the Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE).

The vast majority of our students are well-behaved and there are few problems of discipline. If there is a problem, the teacher will
speak to the student in the first instance, and then inform a manager who will issue a verbal warning and inform parents if they deem
it necessary. In more serious cases parents of young learners will be invited to the centre to help find a solution to a problem. Only in
extreme cases will we be obliged to expel or suspend students depending on the seriousness of the situation.

En todos los centros del British Council tanto la seguridad como la higiene es de suma relevancia. En cada curso realizamos simulacros de
incendios e informamos a los alumnos sobre las rutas de salida en caso de emergencia. Cada clase tiene su ruta de salida colocada cerca
de la puerta.
Estaríamos muy agradecidos si los nuevos estudiantes (padres de nuevos estudiantes) pudiesen informar a Nazaret sobre cualquier
aspecto específico de salud rellenando el formulario médico opcional que les proporcionaremos. La dirección y el equipo de
atención al cliente podrá proporcionar una mejor asistencia a los estudiantes en caso de no encontrarse bien.
No. Los alumnos que demuestran al final de un curso que han desarollado las destrezas necesarias para comprender y comunicarse
eficazmente al nivel requerido estarán preparados para pasar al siguiente nivel. La evaluación continua y las notas de examenes
nos da una visión clara de las habilidades del alumno. No obstante, es importante que se llegue a un nivel algo homogenio para
asegurar el éxito del futuro aprendizaje.
Los alumnos jóvenes deben traer una nota firmada de los padres. El alumno deberá mostrar la nota al profesor y en la oficina de
Atención al Cliente se la sellarán. Sólo así el guardia de seguridad le permitirá salir del centro.
Si un alumno encuentra un nivel demasiado fácil o difícil, la primera persona con la que debe hablar es con su profesor. Éste
decidirá si el alumno debe hablar con el jefe de estudios para que le evalúe de nuevo. Si el alumno asiste a un curso de unos 100
horas en otro centro que no pertenece al British Council o en el extranjero y cree que ha avanzado lo suficiente como pasar al
siguiente nivel, puede solicitar una nueva prueba de nivel, aportando la documentación pertinente.
En el British Council hacemos todo lo posible para garantizar que las clases siempre tengan el mismo profesor. Si por alguna
razón esto no fuera posible, intentamos asegurarnos de que las clases tengan el mismo profesor sustituto. Si bien hacemos todo
lo posible para garantizar la coherencia en la sustitución de las clases, a veces circunstancias que están fuera de nuestro control,
por ejemplo una enfermedad, hacen que esto no sea posible.
Los grupos se forman teniendo en cuenta el nivel asignado en la prueba de nivel o en el caso de los alumnos de cursos anteriores,
el nivel indicado por el profesor al finalizar el curso anterior. También intentamos que los alumnos jovenes de una clase tengan
una edad lo más parecida posible. No podemos atender a las peticiones para garantizar que los alumnos estén con sus amigos
en determinados grupos debido al tamaño del centro y a nuestra convicción de que conocer a nuevos alumnos forma una parte
importante del desarrollo y la madurez personal.
Los alumnos realizan cursos de preparación para los exámenes de Cambridge en los siguientes niveles:
Nivel 6 – Preparatorio del First Certificate in English (FCE)
Nivel 8 – Preparatorio del Cambridge Advanced in English (CAE)

La mayoría de los alumnos tiene un buen comportamiento y sólo en contadas ocasiones surgen problemas de disciplina. En estos
casos el profesor hablará primero con el alumno, luego informará a dirección del centro y el alumno recibirá un aviso verbal y se
informará a los padres si se considera necesario. En los casos más serios nos reuniremos con los padres de los alumnos jóvenes
para intentar buscar una solución al problema. Sólo en casos extremos nos veremos obligados a expulsar al alumno temporal o
indefinidamente, dependiendo de la gravedad de la situación.
Aunque el British Council no puede por ley ofrecer cursos de inglés en el Reino Unido, acredita a un gran número de cursos y
