The Parish Community of Our Lady of the Angels founded July 2005 Church of the Immaculate Conception (ICC), est. 1875 Church of Saint Joachim (SJC), est. 1901 Parish Office: 21-23 Bayard Street, Trenton, NJ 08611-1344 Email: [email protected] 609-695-6089 fax: 609-695-4376 www.olanj.org ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI Feast Day October 4 Francis of Assisi was a poor little man who astounded and inspired the Church by taking the gospel literally—not in a narrow fundamentalist sense, but by actually following all that Jesus said and did, joyfully, without limit and without a sense of self-importance. Serious illness brought the young Francis to see the emptiness of his frolicking life as leader of Assisi's youth. Prayer—lengthy and difficult—led him to a self-emptying like that of Christ, climaxed by embracing a leper he met on the road. From the cross in the neglected field-chapel of San Damiano, Christ told him, "Francis, go out and build up my house, for it is nearly falling down." Francis became the totally poor and humble workman. Parish Office Hours: He must have suspected a deeper meaning to "build up my house." But he Monday–Thursday: 9:00am-8:30pm would have been content to be for the rest of his life the poor "nothing" man Friday – 9:00am-1:00pm actually putting brick on brick in abandoned chapels. He gave up all his Parish Clergy: possessions, piling even his clothes before his earthly father (who was Rev. Fr. Cesar Rubiano, ext. 104 demanding restitution for Francis' "gifts" to the poor) so that he would be totally (Pastor) free to say, "Our Father in heaven." He was, for a time, considered to be a Msgr. John Dermond religious fanatic, begging from door to door when he could not get money for Rev. Fr. Raymond Hughes his work, evoking sadness or disgust to the hearts of his former friends, ridicule Rev. Fr. Philip Cordisco, O.Ss.T from the unthinking. Mr. Guido Mattozzi, Deacon Mr. Benito Torres, Deacon But genuineness will tell. A few people began to realize that this man was Mr. Michael Scannella, Deacon actually trying to be Christian. He really believed what Jesus said: "Announce the kingdom! Possess no gold or silver or copper in your purses, no traveling Parish Overseers: bag, no sandals, no staff" (see Luke 9:1-3). Mr. & Mrs. Benedict & Clara Gioe Francis' first rule for his followers was a collection of texts from the Gospels. Mr. & Mrs. Carlos & Maritza Lopez Mr. & Mrs. Robert & Barbara Sanna He had no idea of founding an order, but once it began he protected it and Pastor’s Administrative Assistant: accepted all the legal structures needed to support it. His devotion and loyalty to the Church were absolute and highly exemplary at a time when various Mrs. Greys Lopez ext. 118 movements of reform tended to break the Church's unity. Bookkeeper: He was torn between a life devoted entirely to prayer and a life of active Mr. Ray Micharski ext. 100 preaching of the Good News. He decided in favor of the latter, but always Faith Formation: returned to solitude when he could. During the last years of his relatively short Sr. Carolyn Houck, MPF ext. 107 life (he died at 44), he was half blind and seriously ill. Two years before his Pastoral Care: death, he received the stigmata, the real and painful wounds of Christ in his Sr. Domenica Troina, MPF ext. 102 hands, feet and side. Please join in the celebration of his life, on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at SJC for a Mass Worship & Music: at 12:15PM, with the blessing of animals immediately after Mass at the Ms. Yuko Unehara, ext. 103 Grotto. Page Two 27th Sunday Ordinary Time 594 LORD: “INCREASE OUR FAITH.” “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed....” This is what Jesus teaches us TODAY as he taught his disciples when they directly asked him, Increase our faith. With the social and racial conflicts last week and chaos in the world in general, we can attest this are difficult times for faith. Doubts appear in the hearts of many of our brothers at a religious, political and economic level; there is a great amount of disappointment, indifference and scepticism. The cry of many of our brothers is the same as that of the apostles: “increase our faith.” If we reach the root of the problem, we will see primarily that when we become distant from God we lose the meaning of our life and also the value in the “others.” Jesus’ answer has in account the intention of the disciples. They ask for quantity; he asks for quality! However, the petition is fair because faith is something that we ask from God. We are conscious that it is his gift, the fundamental gift from God, from which all other gifts find their support. It is all in the Christian life because it gives us a light that illuminates everything, because it is happiness, optimism and the strength of God. All that is given to us to respond with enthusiasm to the invitation that Jesus makes to us to follow him. Faith does not only help us to believe in Him and in what is beyond the material and the physical, but it is also a valuable tool to find ourselves. Let us ask for a vibrant faith from God. We truly need it. Let us ponder on our own faith, making it alive through prayer, meditation and participation in the church life in our parish(es), groups and movements. But let us consciously realize that the faith, that is not cultivated through a deep relationship with God in prayer, ends in frustration. Only the one who has faith is able to move mountains and put into practice the creative and transforming dynamism of the kingdom. The first believer in the Gospel of Luke was Mary, for which Elizabeth proclaims her as happy for believing (Lk 1:45); we also can be joyful servants. We need a good dose of faith to be able to live in a world like ours. But instead, laicism and secularism pretend to erase faith from our social existence. One can be a Christian believer, but in a “private” way, without it affecting at all our options, decisions and our socio-political actions. One can be a “Sunday” Christian, but beware, “Do not let it show Monday through Saturday at work!” We are heaped with so many unjust, absurd and brutal deaths, that it becomes difficult to believe that all this might have a meaning, that the love and the providence of God might have a word to say about all this, and that the Resurrection might be stronger than sin and death. This is why we need to plead to God every day: “Increase our faith!” Father Cesar. 594 02 October 2016 THE MONTH OF OCTOBER Is dedicated to the holy rosary, one of the best known of all Catholic devotions. The best way to celebrate the month is praying the rosary. “The rosary marks the rhythm of human life, bringing it into harmony with the rhythm of God’s own life” (Pope John Paul II). October includes the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7). Mass will be celebrated at 12:15PM ICC. A special blessing of rosary beads will be done at the conclusion of the mass. All are welcome. We will also pray 1 decade of the Rosary 15 minutes before all weekend Masses in October, RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY 2 OCTOBER 2016 Celebrated in the Diocese of Trenton and in all parishes throughout the United States. This is an opportunity for parishes to focus on the great gift of human life. This year’s theme is: “Every Life is Worth Living.” FEAST OF ST. OLA COMMEMORATES CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS THURSDAY, 6 OCTOBER The Columbus Day celebration will start at 6:00PM outside of SJC Trilingual Mass at 7pm, SJC Our Lady of the Angels Parish is pleased to hold a mass in commemoration of the legacy of Christopher Columbus. This special event will be followed by mass at 7 pm, in which our Italian visitors, Knights of Columbus, members of the Mercer County Societa dei Cavalieri and a Color Guard will participate at the religious service. Join us in welcoming our special guests to this unique event. We deeply appreciate your dedicated service to the Parish Community. We encourage more parishioners to become part of this important Ministry PRAYER FOR ALL SOULS During the month of November every Catholic should pray for the souls of our dear deceased & for all the souls in Purgatory. We shall continue the custom of placing the names of our beloved deceased upon the side altar. Please clearly write on the envelope in your packet the names of your beloved deceased and place it in the collection basket until the third week in October. The envelopes will be placed on the side altar for the month of November. This is a wonderful way to remember our deceased relatives LEARN HOW TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN! VIRTUS SESSION OCTOBER 12, 2016 ST. JOACHIM CHURCH - 5:30PM TO 8:30PM Our Lady of the Angels Parish is committed to inform and teach our community to protect our children and youth from the perils of sexual abuse. We work to establish safe environments for the children and youth under the care of our community and to report and investigate the allegations of sexual abuse that involve minors. As part of our efforts, we are inviting all our parishioners, volunteers and workers to a session of VIRTUS that covers the scope and nature of the sexual abuse and also provides the participants with the steps an adult in charge of children can follow to protect them. This session will teach us how to protect our children and to identify signs of abuse. All are welcome! READING OF THE DAY INCREASE OUR FAITH Today’s Gospel passage falls under the category that has come to be known as the “hard sayings” of Jesus. Hard to understand, hard to apply to life today. The Apostles’ request, “increase our faith,” is in response to a previous “hard saying” about how frequently we are called upon to forgive others. Curiously, Jesus seems rather unforgiving in responding to their request, or in describing the manner in which they are to serve others. Jesus uses exaggerations to wake us up to how God is present in our lives, and how we are urged to live if God is with us. None of us is called upon to uproot trees or cast mountains into the sea. The faith we have is adequate for the task we are called upon to do: spread the gospel by our witness. And living that witness is done not for self-gratification or recognition, but out of the joy of helping the world to hear the Good News. First Reading: Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4 Second Reading: 2 Timothy 1-6-8, 13-14 Gospel: Luke 17:5-10 Faith is gracious gift from God. It can neither be earned nor bought, only responded to with works of love and service. A vibrant faith can make us strong, loving, and wise, confident that God will guard us from all harm. He is the Rock of our salvation. From ORDO 2016 REFLECTION QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK ADULT: Name a time this past week when you thanked and praised God for your life. CHILD: Name a time this past week when you stopped to thank God for all that you have been given. Within your will, O Lord, all things are established, and there is none that can resist your will. For you have made all things, the heaven and the earth, and all that is held within the circle of heaven; you are the Lord of all. (Cf.
