Raymond Ave, Pasadena, CA 91103 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK... August 31, 2014 Dear Friends, As you know from our weekly bulletins over the past few weeks, we are delighted to welcome several new parish staff members. These hires are the result of existing staff member retirements or replacing those who have moved on to other opportunities. It has allowed me to step back and look at the needs of St. Andrew Parish going forward. Thankfully, we are a vibrant parish that is growing and changing – we now have 75 volunteer ministries. As a result, the responsibilities and titles of staff positions also have changed to meet the needs of the times. These new people will allow me to enhance the focus of my time on the pastoral and spiritual needs of the parish while not adding any substantial costs to the parish budget. For example, in last week’s bulletin we introduced our new Administrative Director, Denise Peña. Mrs. Peña is replacing my former assistant, Mrs. Esther Luna. In consultation with parish leaders and our Finance Council, the position was re-defined so that some of my more administrative responsibilities can be undertaken by her. This gradual transition of certain administrative responsibilities will enable me to spend more of my time on those spiritual and pastoral activities which are so important to me and to all of you. In addition to parish staff, there are also staffing changes in our parish school. Like most parishes, St. Andrew School must operate on a self-sustaining basis, since the Church itself has so many demands for funds. Consequently, the Board of St. Andrew School maintains a school budget separate from the parish budget. We just commenced the 2014-2015 academic year with a record number of students 255, post the recession. However, to maintain tuition costs at a reasonable level making a Catholic education accessible for families, many schools rely on outside donations. As noted in a recent bulletin, Ms. Belinda Resendez has been appointed to the newly -created position of Director of Development & Marketing at St. Andrew School to assist our parish school’s principal, Dr. Kenneth Foersch, and the school’s Board [of Trustees] in seeking grants, and building student enrollment. Her salary is paid by our school. Please join me in welcoming these talented new members of the St. Andrew parish family. I encourage you to introduce yourselves to them and to help them become more familiar with our wonderful parish and its people. Our goal in all staffing decisions is to better serve you, the people of St. Andrew Parish! Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Paul A. Sustayta Pastor 2 ST. DENIS PEÑA, ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR Dear Parishioners, I am excited to be joining the Saint Andrew Family! Here at Saint Andrew, there is such a wonderful, positive spirit and I know that now is a great time to be a part of this growing, exciting time in our history! I was born and raised in Los Angeles and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for ten years. It was there that I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Dominican University in San Rafael, CA. I moved back home to Los Angeles a year ago with my husband, our two daughters, Selena and Lily, and our dog, Tucker. I have spent most of my professional career in Financial Aid and Higher Education until recently, when I decided it was time for a change of scenery and am moving in to the Administrative Director position on September 2nd. I longed for an opportunity to be close to home, my children and my faith-- I know that this is the perfect opportunity for me to accomplish just that. When I’m not on duty, you can find me cheering on the Dodgers, at the park with my girls, or putting some elbow grease into my "new" old house. I am committed to providing exceptional service and communication for our Parishioners and welcome your input on how to improve our efforts. Thank you. Serving with you, Denise Peña MINISTRY FAIR FOR CONFIRMATION STUDENTS Attention All Confirmation Students: We are pleased to announce we will be hosting a Ministry Fair for students who were confirmed in May 2014 and those who will be confirmed in 2015 (Second Year), on Sunday, September 14, directly after the 9:30 a.m. Mass in the School Auditorium.
