Pat’s Message “See what you just made me do!” drunken, abusive father beats his young son or punches his wife, and then utters the words above-- in effect blaming them for the abuse they are receiving from him. The Book of Wisdom in our first Scripture reading for today’s Mass presents an example of the same evil thinking-- treating other people as less real than we are, only seen for what they can do for us or against us. “Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings.…Let us see whether his words be true.… Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him.” Are you ever guilty of this kind of response when someone points out your faults and sins? Does anger, embarrassment and jealousy ever prompt you to lash out at the other person, this phony righteous judge who tries to tell me what I should be doing? I suspect that all of us have to struggle with the tendency to attack anyone who criticizes us. The greater evil by far, is to turn around and deliberately inflict injury on the other person so we can get him or her off our back. Men tend to use physical violence and direct verbal abuse. Women poison reputations and friendships with words and actions that isolate, stigmatize, and demoralize a person. Instead of saying, “See what you made me do,” the just person is wise enough to see and accept that other persons are just as real and important as I am, and their views are necessary if I am to escape an unhealthy obsession with myself. A Father Ron Rolheiser in The Shattered Lantern points to four characteristics of a narcissistic, antispiritual, anti-Christian life style we must struggle against. First, we have to see others and the world outside us as being as real as we are. (Not easy at any age). Second, we cannot be guided by the slogans: Quality of Life, Upward Mobility, The Pursuit of Excellence, and Material Comfort. (Christ’s gospel is not the yuppie gospel.) Third, we have to resist the movement toward excessive privacy (Think of the shopper in a busy supermarket with cell phone or headphones covering the ears. While overtly very public and potentially social, they are moving inside their own private world.) Fourth, we need to see that we can’t believe in the reality of God when our motivation doesn’t go beyond that of doing our own thing. (Reality for us can get narrowed down to seeing nothing beyond our own heartaches and troubles.) “Whoever receives one child…” Who said this: “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all”? Jesus said it to his apostles when they were discussing among themselves who was the greatest. As always, Jesus took the common understanding of “great” and went way beyond it. “The first shall be last and the last shall be first.” Who, says Jesus, is truly great and truly blessed? Those who see God in the mystery and surprise of everyday experience as in the wonder of a little child are on the road to greatness. Receiving the presence of God depends upon purity of heart, upon being free of unhealthy self-preoccupation, excessive pragmatic concern, and constant restless distractions. Our hearts must become disposed to receive the presence of God, of others, of the world. The great Catholic theologian, Father Karl Rahner, S.J. told us that in our world today the only true believers in God will be mystics. This means being touched by God in a way that goes beyond what we can think, express, imagine or even clearly feel. It is a very ordinary experience open to all, and had by all. God’s grace comes to us constantly, but never in a way we can contain it or claim to understand it, much less control it. Jesus tells us that what he has come to bring to us is discovered best in those who are needy, tiny, and powerless. The others are so full of themselves and their dreams, ambitions, appetites and fixed ideas that there is in their life ‘no room in the inn’ for the Savior to be born in them. Open up. Let go, and let God! + + + God was present with abundant blessings in last week’s Lomita Fair. Thanks for all those whose work and support enriched the lives of so many people. ¡Abrete! ¡Déjate llevar, y permítele a Dios entrar! 4 LIT U RGY ANDW ORSHIP St. Matthew the Evangelist St. Matthew, probably originally known as Levi, was the son of Alpheus and is presumed to have been a Galilean. “As tax-gatherer at Capharnaum, he collected custom duties for Herod Antipas, and, although a Jew, was despised by the Pharisees, who hated all publicans.” When he was summoned by Jesus, Matthew arose and followed Him and made a feast for him in his house, where tax-gatherers and sinners sat at table with Christ and His disciples. This, as we know from Scripture, cause a great protest from the Pharisees to whom Jesus responded, “I came not to call the just, but sinners.” No further reference is made to Matthew in the Gospels, except in the list of the Apostles. As a disciple and Apostle he followed Christ, accompanying Him up to the time of His Passion. In Galilee Matthew was one of the witnesses of Christ’s Resurrection and he was also among the Apostles who were at the Ascension. What we know of Matthew’s later life is not supported. It is thought he continued to preach the Gospel to Jews. We think you will like it! Question of the Week “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” What is my understanding of ministry? Do I truly believe that to be a minister means to be a servant of others? FAITH FORMATION 5 WORK AND PRAY WITH THE TRAPPIST MONKS PARENT COMMITMENT A“Live-in Experience” Vocational Retreat For Single Men A parent must attend 1 parent commitment meeting for their child registered in Religious Education (CCD) and/or Confirmation. Please choose from the following dates. Sept. 30-Oct 4 Abbey of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity Huntsville, Utah There is no cost but space is limited. If you take a bus or plane to Salt Lake City the Monastery will pick you up with no charge. For more dates and information call toll free 1-800-221-1807. This retreat appeared on the front page of the New York Times. VOCATIONS Have you looked at the front page of the Tidings for Sept. 11 ???? It shows Cardinal Mahoney on the steps of St. John's Seminary with 38 seminarians for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Eleven of them are new for this year. With our prayers and the grace of God that would mean 9.5 Priests average over the next 4 years. So say prayers in thanksgiving that these men are willing to spend 4 years preparing for the priesthood and that they will persevere until ordination. That’s our job if we want to continue to be served by good priests. For those of you who have family serving in the armed forces; are you aware that there is an Archdiocese for the Military services? All of their priests are on "loan" to them by bishops of other dioceses. None of them are "Incardinated" to the Military archdiocese. The Bishops willingly loan these priests because the military provides more vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life for the church in America than from any other single source. So consider supporting them financially also. Your family members deserve to have the services of good Chaplains. For more info on the above contact Tom Reis at 310-325-6131 Religious Education (K-8) Commitment Meeting Dates: Sunday, September 27 @ 1:00 PM — Hegarty Hall (English) Sunday, September 27 @ 2:00 PM Hegarty Hall (Spanish) RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (K-8) Final Registration Dates Please come to Hegarty Hall to register. O U R F A I T H TEEN ALERT Service hours can be fun! IOW, Knowing Internet Lingo Can Help Parents Safeguard Kids Online chat rooms, instant messaging systems, and even cell phones equipped to send text messages are environments rich in abbreviations, acronyms, and other shorthand that help increase the speed of communication. Parents need to become aware of some of the common lingo that is used in these environments. Some of these terms may be found to be vulgar, degrading, or otherwise offensive. However, parents and educators need to have a level of understanding of the dangers that face our children. Casa provides shelter to women who are pregnant and are experiencing a life crisis such as abandonment by a husband or boyfriend, homelessness because their parents do not want an unmarried pregnant daughter in their home, domestic violence or some other crisis that could bring harm to their unborn child. Casa provides a safe home, prenatal care, education in parenting, transportation for doctor visits, job search skills, counseling as needed and a staff that cares about them and their unborn child. I have been on the Board of Directors (in charge of maintenance) for almost six years now and have witnessed dozens of women give birth to healthy babies and begin their new lives as parents with a very positive outlook to the future. Casa de los Angelitos is located in Harbor City and is the only crisis pregnancy shelter in the South Bay. It depends totally on the contributions of the faith community in the local area. Thank you for your always generous support of God’s work in the world and for these women and their precious babies that they have chosen life for.
