Our Weather in California
Often times when I speak to former classmates, they comment on the great weather with
which we are blessed to have in Southern California.
More often than not, I tend to show off of how
blessed we are to have the best weather in the country. Yet, the current lack of rainfall in our state is
leading our communities into a water shortage for
future personal and commercial use. In response to
this crisis, the Bishops of California have asked us to
pray for rain. As the situation continues to worsen
each day, I ask that you join me in supporting this
prayer request during this crisis in California.
Because of the potentially dangerous impact on people,
industry and the environment, the Catholic Bishops of
California are asking all people of faith to join in prayer
for God’s mercy and compassion.
“As we work toward the common good of the state in this
situation, we are reminded of our dependence on the Creator. Our relationship with Him calls us to be good stewards of the creation He has entrusted to us. As stewards of
creation we can turn to the Divine Master asking that He
see our plight and give ear to our plea for rain,” said
Bishop Soto.
He offers this simple prayer: May God open the heavens
and let His mercy rain down upon our fields and mountains. Let us especially pray for those most impacted by
water shortages and for the wisdom and charity to be
good stewards of this precious gift. May our political
leaders seek the common good as we learn to care and
share God's gift of water for the good of all.

“California is facing its third straight year of lower than
normal rainfall. The Golden State is no stranger to
drought and - although one has not been officially declared – the low levels of reservoirs, Sierra snowpack and
groundwater are becoming increasingly apparent.
“Water is essential to who we are as human beings,” said
Bishop Jaime Soto of Sacramento and president of the
California Catholic Conference of Bishops. “Our reliance
on water reveals how much we are part of creation and
creation is a part of us.”
If current trends continue, the 38 million residents of
California could face many economic, health, safety and
quality of life challenges from the current water shortage.
Some of the highest unemployment in the nation, for instance, is already in California’s rural farming communities. Water shortages could make matters worse in these
devastated communities.
Annually, wildfires threaten homes and livelihoods as
well as the safety of the men and women who must fight
the fires. Workers in the water-, outdoor- and snowrecreation industries face loss of income. Water is vital
for food production, sanitation, power generation, environmental protection and transportation. In a severe
drought people could also face increased respiratory ailments, heat related emergencies, and mental stress. Balancing the needs of various water users in California has
always been a challenge for our leaders and our communities.

Homebound ( Sunday’s ) and/or Ministry to the Nursing Centers
and /or Hospital ( During the week ). We take Holy Communion to
the sick and homebound who are unable to come to Mass. What a
privilege to bring Jesus to our brothers and sisters in Christ! It is a
very rewarding ministry and the commitment of time is flexible. We
have teams who take turns to fit people’s schedules. The reward is
priceless!
We have a great need and hopefully you will prayerfully consider,
sharing your gifts of time and talent for this ministry. This is one of the
Corporal Works of Mercy – “ When I was sick you visited me”

Last year's event collected 4,800 lbs of shoes and brought in over
$2,500 which was used to prepare and build the preschool nature playground which opened last fall! Help us continue to expand this wonderful fund raiser by cleaning out your closet and
bringing in your unwanted shoes, sandals, boots, cleats, etc.
Shoes collected will be refurbished for resale in developing countries and shoes that are "too far gone"
will be recycled into new products.

St. Francis Food Ministries
Receive Grant Funding
The St. Francis Church daily Sack Lunch and weekly Soup
Kitchen ministries were among other county food and shelter programs selected to receive funding
to supplement their services to the community. The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (San Diego) provides federal funding to support community programs that help the needy, poor and
homeless. We are proud of our ministries’ accomplishments and grateful for the support
provided by our many parish volunteers.

Nuestro Clima en California
Regularmente, cuando platico con mis antiguos
compañeros de clase, ellos hacen comentarios sobre el maravilloso clima con el cual estamos bendecidos aquí en el sur de California. Pero aun más a
menudo me gusta presumir sobre nuestra bendición
al tener el mejor clima de todo el país. Sin embargo,
la sequía en nuestro estado nos acerca cada día
más a la escasez de agua en nuestras comunidades para nuestro futuro personal y comercial. En
respuesta a esta crisis, los Obispos de California
nos han pedido que nos unamos en oración para
orar por lluvia en nuestro estado. A medida que esta
situación empeora cada día más, les pido que se

comunidades rurales de agricultura en California
son las que están sufriendo del desempleo más alto
en la nación. La escasez de agua haría que las cosas se empeoraran en estas comunidades ya devastadas.
Con la extensión de la sequía incendios incontrolables amenazan los hogares y las vidas al igual que
la seguridad de los hombres y mujeres que ejercen
como bomberos. Los empleados de las actividades
recreativas de agua, al aire libre y en la nieve se
enfrentan con una pérdida económica. El agua es
vital para la producción de comida, la salubridad, la
generación de electricidad, la protección ambiental
y la transportación.
Las personas pueden también sufrir de un aumento de enfermedades respiratorias, emergencias relacionadas con el calor, y estrés mental en una sequía severa.
Los Obispos en toda California estarán pidiendo a
los católicos y a otros creyentes que oren por la lluvia y por el alivio de todos los afectados por la falta
de agua. Los Obispos circularán oraciones a las
parroquias para este fin de semana, y hasta que se
acabe la sequía.

necesidades de todos los usuarios de agua en California-pero aún más cuando hay menos agua para
distribuir.
Dice el Obispo Soto, “El esforzarnos por el bienestar del estado nos recuerda nuestra dependencia en
el Creador y su llamada a ser sus buenos administradores. Como mayordomos de la creación nos
dirigimos al Divino Dueño para pedirle que contemple nuestra situación difícil y escuche nuestra suplica por la lluvia”.

Oremos especialmente por aquellos más afectados por la falta de agua, y por la sabiduría y la
caridad de ser buenos administradores de este

La escuela de San Francisco de Asís, sección preescolar está recolectando zapatos usados. Durante el evento del año pasado recolectamos 4800 pares de zapatos,
que recaudaron más de $2,500, los cuales se utilizaron
para preparar y construir el parque natural de preescolar que se inauguró el otoño pasado. Ayúdenos a recaudar fondos este año para continuar este proyecto,
solo tiene que limpiar su armario y separar los zapatos
que no usa, sandalias, botas, etc.,

reventa en países subdesarrollados y/o serán reciclados para crear nuevos productos. Amarre el

SANTA ROSA DE LIMA
La primera santa americana fue Rosa de Lima, peruana de
nacimiento. Murió en 1617 y fue canonizada en 1671, diez
años después de la primera fundación inglesa en lo que hoy
son Estados Unidos de América. Esta santa americana es
acompañada por otros santos como san Felipe de Jesús
(mexicano) canonizado en 1862 y Madre Francisca Cabrini
(italoestadounidense y la primera santa de EE. UU.) canonizada en 1946. Oficialmente hay 60 santos y 77 beatos que nacieron o trabajaron en América. La mayoría de estos son 50
mexicanos, 33 brasileños, 12 canadienses, nueve estadounidenses, ocho colombianos, siete peruanos, tres argentinos
y tres chilenos. Guatemala, Cuba, República Dominicana, Uruguay y Venezuela tienen un santo(a) cada uno. Estados Unidos
y Canadá comparten siete mártires.

los últimos 100 años. Sólo ocho de
ellos y ellas
fueron canonizados durante los
últimos ocho años. No todos estos
santos nacieron en América, pero
sí dedicaron su vida a evangelizarla. Estos 137 santos de la
Iglesia universal son un testimonio
de la obra del Espíritu Santo en el
continente americano.
