Mural honors arts mission
Garfield Elementary is excited to have local mural artist Chris Bates create a
wonderful work of art on the north side of our campus. The mural honors our mission
as a Loveland Integrated School of the Arts (LISA) and represents our commitment to
learning in, with and through the arts. This mural is an incredible addition to our
school, our neighborhood and our entire community! Mr. Bates will be an Artist-inResidence at our school during the 2013-14 school year. He will be working with
students to create two additional murals in the fall and spring.

Letter from the Principal
Dear Garfield Families,
Welcome back to school! We hope you have had wonderful adventures this summer with friends and family.
We are excited to kick off another school year, and are looking forward to big things in 2013-14. Our teachers
and staff have been working hard again this summer . . . planning great activities for our LISA program and
preparing exciting new integrated learning experiences that align with the Common Core State Standards!
At every level in the Thompson School District, dedicated and talented people are working hard to continue to
make the schools in Loveland great places to learn and grow. I am proud to be a part of this district and the
Garfield Family, and I look forward to serving you in the coming year!
We here at Garfield want to extend a warm welcome to new families and say a big, “Welcome Back!” to our
returning students and families. Garfield is proud of the deep connection we have to our community and
neighbors, and this year we celebrate 60 years of learning! Wow! What an accomplishment! We are so proud
to be here! Thank you for making us strong for 60 years and counting!
Finally, I’d like to invite you to consider joining the Garfield Parent Teacher Association this year. We have a
very active group of parents and teachers, working together to bring great opportunities to our students,
families and staff. Stop in and see what our PTA is all about on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
I’d also like to invite you to consider working with us this year on our School Accountability and Advisory
Committee (SAAC). The SAAC meets monthly on the second Monday of each month, just prior to PTA, at
5:30 p.m. This small collaborative group helps guide our policy and programming at Garfield. If you are
interested in being a part of this team for 2013-14, please come by so we can talk about it, or give me a call at
970-613-6002.
Welcome back to school! We are looking forward to another great year!

Show pride in our school
by following PRIDE rules
At Garfield we honor the Code
of PRIDE in order to have a
more positive atmosphere in our

Person. This means we take
turns, we set a good example,
we care about others, we try to
be good listeners, and we
believe in our own worth and
the worth of others.
R stands for Respect and
Responsibility. This means we
are polite and show good
manners, we are considerate to
others, we value ourselves and
others, and we try to be kind to
others. We follow the rules,
listen to others, and complete
our work both at school and at
home.
I stands for doing our Individual
Best, which means being
motivated, being a good role
model, working toward our goals,
and being proud of our own
accomplishments without being
boastful. We keep trying, and we
work hard.
D stands for Demonstrating
Truth and Honesty. It means
being trustworthy, honest, making
good choices, and accepting
consequences when we have
made a poor choice.

News
Welcome back, everyone, and a special welcome to all new Garfield families. Your PTA has already been very
busy this year. We've had a lot of fun meeting new families at the Watermelon Social, Meet & Greets and
Kindergarten BooHoo Breakfasts. The families that helped build our Corn Roast float and those that walked with us
in the parade all had a great time helping to spread the word about the LISA program at Garfield. And that's just in
August!
I'd like to invite all parents and other interested family members to join us at our Back to School PTA meeting at
6:30 p.m. in the library on Monday, Sept. 9. We will talk about our plans for the upcoming school year. Child care is
provided at the school – and we have snacks! Please come and see what we're all about!

Welcome Back Volunteers!
I want to thank all of you that helped with projects
before school even started! It’s our teamwork and
willingness to help that makes Garfield such a great
place for our kids. There are a lot of fun events coming
up that will need volunteers to make things run
smoothly. I will continue to use the VITAL online system
to notify you of volunteer opportunities as well as
posting them on the PTA bulletin board just inside the
main entrance. If you do not have email but would like
to volunteer, please call me and let me know the best
way to contact you. If you are new to Garfield and have
not registered to be a volunteer, you can do so online
at www.thompsonschools.org or at the kiosk at school.
For safety reasons, all parents, grandparents and
caregivers that help in the classroom or go on field trips
must register a week before they volunteer. You can
specify the areas and events you wish to volunteer for
when you register, or by updating your preferences if
you’re already registered. Thank you for making a
difference in our school!

Garfield PTA’s artistic float was one of 100 entires in Loveland’s OldFashioned Corn Roast Festival Parade on Aug. 24 in downtown
Loveland. A group of volunteers built the float and incorporated the
artwork of students into corn cob kernels and used their painted
handprints to create banners. Thank you to all of the volunteers and
