Garfield Community Garden News
Summer Guide
By Zuri Rowland, Master Gardener
Hello neighbors! Summer is just here and we’ve put together a few
tips to keep your gardens going through the hot months:
• If you have not yet started your garden, now is not the time
to start from seeds. Start your garden with seedlings (small
plants) instead, but start planting now because the summer
heat is not nice to un-established plants.
• At this time of the season it is late but still possible to plant
cucumbers, melons, corn, tomatoes and some varieties of
peppers.
• Hydration is very important this time of year. Make sure your
plants are getting plenty of water. In the community garden,
we have had to increase our watering to two times per day for
45 min using a drip irrigation system. As it gets even warmer,
fruit bearing trees and shrubs should be watered every other
day.
We have had some exciting developments in our Garfield Community
Garden! Welcome Diner’s community garden plot has started to produce some veggies for their restaurant. Now you can enjoy
great locally raised food from our very own Community Garden. We have also teamed up with Verde Park’s Teen Council to
teach our youth the ins and outs of gardening. We decided on a “salsa” garden theme and look forward to a great harvest that
the teens can share with their families.
If you have any questions or are interested in becoming a part of our Garfield Community Garden, please contact us at
[email protected]. Happy Gardening!
Puente
Human Rights Movement, is a grassroots, base-building migrant justice organization in Garfield aiming
to develop, educate, and empower migrant communities to enhance the quality of life of our community
members. Formed in response to attacks towards the day laborer community at hands of the Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office
in 2007. Since then they have made a priority of building an organization that is comprised of the people most impacted by antiimmigrant policies and their allies. Their leadership and base is migrant people, undocumented and formerly undocumented
people, people from mixed immigration status families, multigenerational and people of color who are threatened every day
with racial profiling. Exposing the issues with current immigration policy through personal narratives is at the center of any
strategy or tactic used within their work.
Puente is conducting a survey in the Garfield Neighborhood, to better
understand issues of concern in a way that is representative of the community
as a whole. If you are interested in learning more about Puente’s programs
and activities or participating in the community survey, please contact
[email protected] or call 602-579-2879.

Verde Park’s Teen Council at Garfield Garden
On Wednesday, May 15, Verde Park (916 E. Van Buren)
Recreation Coordinator, Cindi Wilson was contacted by
a representative of Department of Economic Security
to set up the park as an off-site location for residents to
sign up for food stamps and health insurance. They will
be available one day per week for Garfield resident’s
convenience.
Healthy People; and Healthy, Sustainable Environment,
Land and Resources.
On Monday, May 13, Verde Park (916 E. Van Buren) received
the first hot meals for ages 18 and under, from St. Mary’s
Food Bank, Kid’s Café Feeding Program. 50 evening meals
will be served at Verde Park daily Monday through Friday
at no cost to the youth and will become a year around
site. Also, on Friday, May 17, Verde Park (916 E. Van Buren)
hosted a Hop Scotch and side walk chalk art event. 40
youth participated from Alkire, Hermoso, Lindo, University, and Verde Parks, in learning the rules of hop scotch and displaying
their artistic talents in chalk art on the cement. Everyone enjoyed designing their name after finishing their art project.
Reinvent Phoenix is continuing its efforts to bring resident voices
into planning and development in neighborhoods near the light rail.
Reinvent Phoenix has held events at Verde Park, Eastlake Park, Puente,
Garfield Elementary, Edison Elementary, Shaw Elementary, Housing
Solutions Inc. and the Eastlake Park Neighborhood Association. Both the Arizona State University Team and the St. Luke’s Health
Initiative team appreciate the amount of participation and feedback that they have received from residents.
The ASU team will have a new survey available online for residents who have not yet been able to provide input. The DPZ design
team will be in Phoenix in August to create visuals and plans. This will be an excellent time to provide input. Please look for
the announcement about time and location (The events will be held around August 20th). We look forward to continuing the
conversations, and planning around how to improve our city. Please email Braden Kay at [email protected] to get involved
or to get the link the survey. Alwun House
that brightly painted 1912 bungalow at
12th and Roosevelt Streets, is the home
to a trailblazing non-profit arts and culture center, in the heart of Garfield
since 1971. Founding Director, Kim Moody returned to his childhood
neighborhood, with a vision to establish Alwun House as a creative
collaborative – and transformed his community starting from the ground
up - planting trees around the bruised and neglected two-story, getting
Environmental Improvement awards from Mayor Margaret Hance. Presently
known for its’ lush gardens and stage, and as a cozy neighborhood gathering
place and creative arts incubator.
Last month Alwun House was honored to receive the Governor’s Arts Award
for community. “Alwun House Foundation stands as an exemplary model of
engaging the power of art to transform lives and transform community. For
more than 40 years, the Alwun House Foundation has created opportunities
alwunhouse.org
for artists and served as a pivotal beacon in the Garfield community and as a
foundation for the downtown Phoenix arts scene. Their work extends across
artistic and cultural boundaries, and brings diverse audiences, community members and artists together.”
The Alwun house is currently exhibiting Gayle Hooper “A Burst of Color”, thru First Friday, June 7th.

living in Northern California, Michael Babcock and Jenn Robinson
While
decided to buy a food trailer on Craigslist. They drove from
Northern California to Nashville to pick it up and towed it back to Phoenix. Chef,
Michael Babcock wanted to give the people of Phoenix a true taste of authentic
southern cuisine. Since Fall 2012, that’s exactly what he’s done. On Feburary 1st,
2013, Old Dixies opened a brick and mortar location inside of Garfield’s Welcome
Diner. In April, the Welcome Diner recieved the New Times Culinary Big Brain
Award. Since opening, the operators of the Welcome Diner have been great
neighbors, they’re even growing food in the Garfield Community Garden!

On
May 19th several Garfield residents
experienced Arcology Now’s innovative
approach to building, during an event where they
succesfully constructed the company’s 4th prototype
structure.
How would a low cost automated greenhouse affect
your health, happiness and wealth? How about a low
cost, energy efficient home? A car-less city focused
on walk-ability, bicycle locomotion and public transit?
Arcology Now invites Garfield residents to view their
structures, and follow them on Facebook to learn
more about upcoming projects.

and Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation to implement street-side green infrastructure (shade
trees that will be watered by street water runoff), along the historic 9th Street block. Adjacent to the Phoenix Hostel and Cultural Center, this project will serve as a highly
visible demonstration site, educating visitors from around the globe about Phoenix’s efforts to move toward more sustainable infrastructure. Please stop by 9th Street
